    Colt Families,

As many of you read, followed, or heard, this past Thursday our School Board listened to final comments from our community and made adjustments to alleviate the rapid growth and unprecedented overcrowding at Cele. While the changes were necessary and will safeguard our ability to maintain an excellent educational experience for our Colts, our Cele Community will be affected in different ways. Below is a portion of the communication Dr. Killian sent out on Friday to clarify the steps to be taken:

    1. Cele will be a closed campus to future transfers and will adjust existing transfers with the exception of students of employees at Mott Elementary and Cele Middle School. Students that are on a programmatic transfer for Special Education will be allowed to remain at Cele.
    2. The Board elected to enforce a cap and transfer option for future students that move into the neighborhoods of Carmel, Sorento and Vine Creek that will go into effect on March 1. As a result of this, any new students moving into the neighborhoods of Carmel, Sorento, Vine Creek and Blackhawk (the area off Speidel Dr. between the green belt and Hodde Rd.) after March 1 will be zoned to attend Kelly Lane MS.
    3. The Board adjusted the physical zoning boundary for Cele. The Bohl’s Place neighborhood will now be zoned for Park Crest Middle School. Current Cele students and current 5th graders who live in Bohl’s Place will be grandfathered in for the 2020-21 school year. Those students who want to attend Cele MS must complete the district’s Transfer Application for tracking purposes. The transfer window will open in March. Those students who attend Cele next year will be given transfer priority for the following 2 years. Students who elect to attend Cele MS will not receive district transportation, in accordance with district transfer practices.
    4. Another physical zoning boundary adjustment was made regarding Cele and will send the impacted students to Dessau Middle School. The area south of Wells Branch Parkway, north of Howard Lane plus the additional area of future planned development in that area will feed into Dessau beginning with the 2020-21 school year.

I understand that parents and students will receive this news in any number of ways depending upon your unique circumstances. As such, we are not presenting or communicating this information to our students here at school. We are monitoring students closely to see if any of our students may need additional emotional support due to the pending transition. If you feel your son or daughter could use some extra assistance – in any way – please feel free to reach out to any teacher, counselor, or administrator to share your thoughts.

    Pflugerville Chalk Pfest:
Come join us for this awesome family event at the Pfield just down the street on March 7. Park Crest will have a team competing as will many other PfISD campuses. Come show us some love, I promise you will be amazed at the skills of our students.

    Late Bus now Available

Parents, did you know that we have transportation available for Cele students who want to stay for tutorials or participate in clubs on Tuesday and Thursday?  Cele students once again will have a late bus available to allow more students to take advantage of the assistance and opportunities offered after school. In order to be allowed on the bus, students must have made arrangements in advance with parents and a teacher to stay after school. A teacher will verify that the student was present for the planned activity. Students must know their regularly assigned bus number and their address. Buses will depart school at approximately 5 p.m., and travel time home will depend upon how many stops are required.

    Painless Fundraiser

In PfISD, we are very fortunate to have financial support to meet the needs of our students’ education. We also have amazing teachers who become inspired throughout the year and ask to start initiatives, acquire new resources, organize student experiences, or begin new clubs. Our teachers are Forever Learners themselves and often request to attend professional learning conferences or trainings beyond what is expected of them, simply to benefit Cele. When those requests fall outside of what we have allocated in our annual budget, we make it happen with campus activity funds. These are generated primarily through community fundraising, and they are an invaluable part of making Cele such an exceptional school. Rather than asking students to sell items through a traditional fundraiser, which can be a burden at home and a distraction at school, we are trying a “painless fundraiser” this year. It really is quite easy all around. If you have the means and are moved to support us in bringing the best to our Cele students, simply donate here and fill in the amount you can contribute. It is even tax-deductible. Thank you to those who already made a donation, and thank you for the many ways you already support Cele.

    Colt Families,

I had the pleasure of attending the Pflugerville Education Foundation’s fundraising Gala this past Saturday. This past month was School Board Appreciation month, and between the hard working volunteers who make up our phenomenal school board and the hard work volunteers and donors who make up the PEF board, PfISD is in very good hands. In case you are unaware, PEF has provided well over $1,000,000 in grants to PfISD schools for, among other things, innovative teaching grants and assistance to first-year and new-to-PfISD educators. I am proud to say that those funds also are generated by staff donations, and Cele has the highest percentage of employee donors among all secondary campuses. We truly are fortunate to be raising our children in such a supportive community.

This week is also Counselor Appreciation week. A HUGE shout out to our amazing Cele Counseling team. Ms. Guerra, Ms. Moore, and Ms. Zook are simply the best, and simply tireless when it comes to meeting the needs of students and staff. Much of their work crafting and organizing the student experience happens subtly and behind the scenes. You may not fully realize how integral their work is in the lives of our Colts, but I am grateful each day for their compassion and expertise. Our Counselors simply are the best!

In other news, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today, predicting an early spring. I’d have to agree based on this weekend, but make sure our Colts bundle up for Wednesday’s weather. Read on for details of the week ahead,

    A Big Week for Band

Cele band is nothing short of phenomenal, and if you would like another opportunity to see and hear for yourself, this week you are in luck. There is an informal Jazz Band Recital this Wednesday at 6 p.m. Additionally, our students will attend Winter Band Camp at Weiss both Thursday and Friday evenings, from 6 – 8 p.m. The Cele Jazz Band will travel to the Texas State University this Saturday. Give our band directors a pat on the back the next time you see them for providing such enriching opportunities for our Colts!

    Basketball Schedule

Cele boys and girls will take on Kelly Lane Middle School this week. The 8th grade girls and boys are scheduled to play at KLMS. The 7th grade boys and girls are scheduled to play here at Cele. All games, both home and away, begin at 5:30 p.m. Our Colts will round out their season with the District Tournament this weekend. Details for Athletics schedules can be found here.

    Colt Families,

Wow! Such a busy weekend for our Colts! We had our University Interscholastic League competition at Pflugerville Middle School, our District Championship basketball tournaments at each high school, and some of our band students tried out for the Regional Jazz Band. I am happy to report that Cele had multiple top placements in UIL competition, was represented in the championship basketball game on three separate occasions, with 8th grade boys taking 1st for the B Team. To top it off, 8 students made the Regional Jazz Band, including 7th grade student Leron Seals – who earned first Chair! Remarkable, to say the least!

We are so very proud of our students and so grateful that you choose to make Cele your school home. Our teachers truly go well above and beyond to enrich the education of our kids in countless ways. If your child has not yet discovered a niche here at Cele beyond classroom academics, opportunities abound. Encourage your child to speak with any adult at Cele and we would be happy to share some of the incredible extracurricular activities available.

    EF Tours in Café Monday

If you would be interested in your student taking a trip to Panama in the Summer of 2021, there will be an informational meeting provided by EF Tours on Monday, Feb. 10, from 6-7 p.m. This is not a PfISD-sponsored event, but Cele students do have the opportunity to participate.

    Colt Families,

First, a shout out to our First Lego League teams, who represented Cele so well yesterday at the Robotics Tournament. Congratulations to Ms. Kamper and the Colt FLL team “Just Ducks” for winning the Teamwork Award and receiving and invitation to the Championship. Well done!

Parents, you may hear your child talking about some of the assessments we are conducting during this time of year. While most days are spent engaging our kids in learning exercises and investigations, we do take time in the middle of the year to do some in-depth assessment as to how well your child is learning the curriculum. Teachers and the instructional leadership team use that data to set our course of learning for the remainder of the school year.

In actuality, we are always keeping a close eye on how students are achieving or struggling, but these comprehensive mid-year assessments provide us with very helpful information. Students have a number of different responses to “testing,” and the one we try to foster is that it is an opportunity to show what you already know and what we need to work on next. We tell the students that the harder they work on the assessment, the better we can serve them in the coming months. I encourage you to share this message with your child and inquire of him or her what it is that they already have mastered, and what they will be working on next. Each day is an onward and upward journey here at Cele!

    Colt Families,

Today, we mark the life of a tremendous individual, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Having been principal at an elementary school for a while I know with confidence that our Colts know quite a bit already about Dr. King’s life and impact. Recently, MLK Day also has become a time when individuals and groups of people take a moment to give to their communities. As principal of Cele Middle School, I am very confident that our Colts are well on their way to becoming extraordinary citizens. They are passionate about giving back, improving our world, and developing their character. Today I find myself reflecting how Dr. King’s dream is realized in small but significant ways each day at our school.

Looking forward to meeting our newest Colts this Wednesday when our 5th grade students visit Cele! Parents of 5th grade future-Colts, please save the date for Jan. 27. Read on for more details of the week ahead.

Congratulations to our Colt Choir, who will be performing at the Cedar Park Center Tuesday, January 23, to kick off the Austin Spurs basketball game! Tickets are available, and we hope you will swing by to support our Colts and take in a game.

    Basketball Schedule

Cele boys and girls will take on Dessau Middle School this week. The 7th grade girls and boys are scheduled to play at Home, here at Cele. The 8th grade boys and girls are scheduled to travel to DMS. All games, both home and away, begin at 5:30 pm. Athletics schedules can be found here.

    First Lego League

Our Lego Robotics teams are set to compete this Saturday at Lockhart Junior High. It has been inspiring to see our students prepare, plan, test, and problem-solve in anticipation of this cool event. Best of luck, and have fun, Colts!

    School Report Card

The school report card is a subset of the more comprehensive report released each August for the previous school year. The school report card can be found here. Additionally, the Federal Report Card can be found here

    8th Grade End-of-Year Celebrations

Parents of 8th grade students, you will want to mark your calendars for some end-of-year events on the calendar to celebrate our Colts as the finish their middle school years and prepare for high school (I know – too soon!). The 8th grade field trip will be Thursday, May 21, during the school day. The 8th grade formal dance will be Friday, May 22, in the evening. More details to come. Please note, we are foregoing an 8th grade “graduation” event this year out of concern for the number of potential attendees. We have grown quite a bit since last year, and we anticipate this historically well-attended event would prove more frustrating than fun for guests.

    Colt Families,

We had a great first week back and welcomed many new Colts to Cele to start 2020. I am tremendously proud of our kids and how friendly and kind they are whenever they meet a new student. On multiple occasions, I saw veteran Colts should-to-shoulder with new students looking at a schedule and pointing or walking someone to their next class. If you are a new parent to the Cele Community and are receiving this update for the first time – welcome! You are part of a very special place, and your child will be learning from talented teachers alongside some remarkable kids.

If you have a child in basketball, please make note of the message below. There is a possibility that we will adjust the game schedule this week to accommodate our 8th graders attending the Weiss Course Fair. Stay tuned, and we will communicate any changes as soon as possible.

Choice Sheets and Weiss HS Visit

Believe it or not, already it is time to start completing choice sheets for next school year’s classes. Students will receive choice sheets and instructions on how to complete them this week.

This Wednesday, Jan. 15, our eighth-grade students will visit Weiss High School to tour the building and learn more about course offerings; then, eighth-grade students will meet with counselors during social studies Jan. 16 and 17 to begin planning for high school. Parents, please engage your child in conversation about the courses he or she wishes to take. While requesting a specific course does not guarantee that we can make it fit your child’s schedule, we do make every effort to create enough sections of each course next year based on student requests.

    Weiss Course Fair, Jan. 15

Weiss High School will host a course fair for parents of current 8th grade students on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6-8 p.m. Parents and students are encouraged to attend to learn more about which courses are available, encouraged, and required for high school. Our counselors will visit with all 8th grade students to guide them with high school planning, but parents, please make every effort to attend this important event to assist your 8th grade student with course selection.

    Basketball Schedule *Subject to Change*

Cele boys and girls will take on Westview Middle School this week. Due to the conflict with the High School course fair this Wednesday, the PfISD Athletics Department is considering an alternative game schedule this week. Our coaches will communicate any changes as soon as possible. As it stands, the seventh-grade girls and boys are scheduled to play at Westview, and the eighth-grade boys and girls are scheduled to be home. All games, both home and away, begin at 5:30 p.m. Athletics schedules can be found here.

Happy New Year! Today our teachers were hard at work putting the finishing touches on lessons for the coming weeks. First and foremost though, our school values literacy as the foundation of life-long learning. Strong reading habits for our students now has a dramatic impact on their future success and fulfillment in adulthood.

One of the many ways we foster reading is through a “Read It Forward” campaign with a different novel each year. The idea is for students to read the book when they complete work or during SSR or Colts Caught Reading, then pass it on so a classmate can read it. It is so popular, that nearly 200 copies of the book are on hold in our library. I am very grateful that one of our Cele families, the Abels, has generously donated copies of this year’s title, "New Kid," to provide more access and champion the cause – thank you!

Parents, it can be harder to stay engaged with your child’s school life as they grow older. Reading the same book as your child is one way to bond, discuss relevant topics, and share a love of reading. Consider picking up a copy of New Kid and joining our Read It Forward campaign.

    Musical Auditions

Our theatre program is holding auditions this Thursday after school for the spring musical. If you were able to see this year’s One Act Play performance, you understand that theatre at Cele is on another level. Our teachers and students work tremendously hard to produce amazing results, and this season’s musical is sure to be incredible. Students who are interested in auditioning should speak with Ms. Kewley or Mr. Beseda for details about the commitment and expectations before Thursday.

    Basketball

Cele boys and girls will take on Pflugerville Middle School this week. The seventh-grade girls will play at home Wednesday, and the eighth-grade boys will play at home Thursday. All games, both home and away, begin at 5:30 p.m. Athletics schedules can be found here. We could use some parent volunteers to help the PTO keep our concession stand open during the games. If you would be interested in taking a shift, please send a quick message to a Cele PTO Board Member.

Choice Sheets and Weiss HS Visit

Believe it or not, already it is time to start completing choice sheets for next school year’s classes. Students will receive choice sheets and instructions on how to complete them the week of Jan. 13.

Eighth-grade students will visit Weiss High School to tour the building and learn more about course offerings; then, eighth-grade students will meet with counselors during social studies Jan. 16 and 17 to begin planning for high school. Parents, please engage your child in conversation about the courses he or she wishes to take. While requesting a specific course does not guarantee that we can make if fit your child’s schedule, we do make every effort to create enough sections of each course next year based on student requests.

    Weiss Course Fair, Jan. 15

Weiss High School will host a course fair for parents of current eighth-grade students on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6-8 p.m. Parents and students are encouraged to attend to learn more about which courses are available, encouraged, and required for high school. Our counselors will visit with all eighth-grade students to guide them with high school planning, but parents, please make every effort to attend this important event to assist your eighth-grade student with course selection.

    Colt Families,

First of all, a HUGE shout out to our band parents for providing a luncheon to our teachers this past Friday, and to the PTO for providing lunch to teachers this Friday!

Secondly, congratulations to our UIL team for earning a second-place finish both at the sixth-grade team level and the seventh- and eighth-grade team level! We are very proud of all our Colts who have trained hard this semester in preparation to compete against the best and brightest across the district.

We have been encouraging our students to keep on top of their assignments and assessments leading up to this last week. Semester grades will be recorded after this week, and report cards will be sent home when we return in January. Please check in on Skyward and encourage your child to take advantage of tutoring opportunities this week – especially Tuesday and Thursday when late buses are available at 5 p.m.

Friday is an early release day for all PfISD students. Middle school students will be released at 12:45 p.m. There will be no after school activities on Friday, so please make arrangements for your student to get home right after dismissal. The winter holiday will run from Dec. 21 to Jan. 6 for students. Teachers will return on Monday, Jan. 6 to prepare for the spring semester, and students will return Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Read on for more details of the week ahead, and have a safe and happy holiday the next two weeks!

    Colt Families,

As you well know, we have some amazingly talented students at Cele. I just have to smile whenever one of our students shows me something new they learned, created, or discovered. This week, our journalism students have taken charge of the visual announcements we play each day. We are refining our production process, but very soon you will be able to access the announcements through the school website as before. Just one more way for you to be plugged in with the great things that are happening each day at Cele.
