    Fifth Grade Farewell Spirit Nights

Join us on one…or both…of these fun and easy ways to support our Fifth Grade Farewell Committee. The

focus of this committee is the help our departing fifth grade students accomplish two things. First, to give

back by donating funds towards something that will be part of Riojas forever. The second is to send them off

    in style! They deserve it!

    •  Baskin Robbins Spirit Night: Thursday, May 11th from 5 to 9 p.m. @ 1552 Farm to Market 685 in the WalMart shopping center.
    •  Chipotle Spirit Night: Thursday, May 18th from 5 to 9 p.m. @ the 2424 FM 685 location in the Stone HillTown Center. Teacher Appreciation Week begins May 1st. I highly encourage you, and/or your child, to write a note to your

childs teacher about the impact he or she has had on your child this year. Also consider sending a message of

appreciation to other educators on campus who have had an impact on your child this year, or in years past. I

Thank you to our amazing Riojas PTO for providing the families with a fun and successful carnival. A special

shout out to Nikki Harrison, our PTO President, for also being the Carnival Chairperson and organizing the

entire event! We had great weather, I saw hundreds of smiling children and parents, heard lots of positive

feedback, and the PTO raised just under $10,000!! You can’t ask for more than that! The PTO has wonderful

plans for this money, including more swings on the playground. I am sure that if you ask your child what they

think about more swings, you will understand how excited we are!

Mott or Riojas – That is the question!

As students are bringing back their “Intent to Return” forms, we are seeing some confusion about whether

your child is zoned for Riojas Elementary or Mott Elementary for next year. Please see the below map to

determine which school your child will be attending, so you can correctly indicate that on the form.

    boundaries

The streets in the green area are in the Riojas zone, and the streets in the blue area are in the Mott zone. If you

have any questions, please call our registrar, Mr. Ray, at 512-594-4138.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

We had a surprise STAAR assembly for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students on Friday. Shout outs to the PHS Drum

Line, HHS Cheerleaders, and HHS Kickstart for coming out to cheer on Riojas students. In addition, students

took a Kahoot quiz (fun, online, timed quiz) and we had a special video message from Spike, the Round Rock

Express mascot! The entire assembly was focused on letting students know that we are proud of their hard

work and that we believe in them! Help us spread that message! STAAR testing for 4th and 5th grade happens

this week. If your child is testing, please make sure they get a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a big

    hug!

    The Carnival is Coming! – April 8th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Download flyers here.

Some items to make sure you note:

    •  Pre-ordered wristbands are a better deal.
    •  PTO is raffling off an iPad Mini2, iPad Air2, a spa day package, and monster grill, and more!
    •  Volunteers are needed to make the Carnival run. Please ask relatives, friends and neighbors if they can help. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044BAFA929ABFF2-riojas
    •  They are also accepting food and business vendors for the carnival. If you are a food vendor or small business vendor and are interested, please email snharrison421@gmail.com

    Safety Is Important!

We had yet another super close call this week in the parking lot with a car almost hitting a child. Had the

mother not jerked her child to the side, she would have been hit. I am not making these instances up! Driving

slowly and cautiously in the parking lot is as important as driving safely in the street.

    TO DO - Reminders:

    Shout Out

Thank you to Becky Mazyrack for organizing our STAAR Assembly. Thanks for the support from PHS and HHS!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

The first round of STAAR testing is just around the corner. Please remember that the campus is closed to all

visitors on those days, including breakfast or lunch visits. All of the STAAR testing dates are listed at the

    bottom of the Press.

    Safety Is Important!

We had two serious near misses – really close calls - last week in which people in the crosswalk were almost

struck by cars! Scary! Our crossing guards have indicated that these situations happen when people are

looking down at their cell phone during drop off or pick up times, or when people are in such a rush, they are

not watching and waiting for the crossing guards’ signals. No text message, phone call, or time crunch is

worth the potential injury of another person. Please help us keep everyone safe!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

Practice is what commits skills into long term memory and creates automaticity. Learning the right way to

shoot a free throw in basketball is important. But shooting baskets over and over and over is what makes a

person good at sinking free throws. The same thing is true in reading! Students learn the skills at school, but

it is the practice every day that makes them good readers. Please make sure your child reads at least 20

minutes each day over Spring Break so they don’t lose their momentum!

Thank you for your participation in our Painless Fundraiser. We will close out the fundraiser on Friday, March

10th. The class at each grade level that raises the most money will win a “Popcorn GoNoodle” party. The

grade level that raises the most money will get to pick the color that is used to dye my hair!! So far, here are

    the leaders:

    •  Class at each grade level in the lead: Fish, Lujano, Gonzales, Hagerman, Tietsort Hovinga, and Cole

    College T-Shirt Day Tomorrow – March 1st

Students are encouraged to wear their college or university shirts this Wednesday as we raise awareness about all

the post-secondary education opportunities available to our kids. We have College T-Shirt days the first Wednesday

of every month, but any day is a great day to get kids thinking about higher education. A reminder that this

Saturday is Explore UT, where the University of Texas campus is open to families and filled with free activities.

Student Attendance is a Big Deal!

Researchers and educators agree that student attendance is one significant indicator of a child’s success in

school. While teachers will do the extra work needed to help your child make up what they missed, the learning

for your child is not the same when they are not a part of the activity and the class discussion. We encourage

parents and guardians to be thoughtful of this when scheduling vacations, appointments, and other events that

may require a student to miss all or part of a school day.

    A+ Financial Tips

A+FCU Financial Tip: Protecting yourself from fraud starts with simple steps. Review your accounts, shred documents,

and limit the sharing of personal information. It’s the little things that make a big difference.

A+FCU Financial Tip: Have you looked at your credit report recently? If the answer is no, this should be a high priority on

your to-do list. Ensure your personal information is correct, check the listed accounts for accuracy, and report errors

    immediately.

A+FCU Financial Tip: Be skeptical, read the fine print on everything, and be wary of giving information. Trials and

lucrative offers, for example, aren’t always what they seem. Should you provide payment information for something

    that is free?

A+ FCU Financial Tip: Fraudsters are sly. They send emails or call to make us aware of suspicious activity but need

information to verify our identity. Don’t click. Stop there. Open a new link or hang up and call your financial institution.

    Better safe than sorry.
