    Rocket Families,

Mission Accomplished! We had nearly every setback imaginable, but at long last, our playgrounds are updated with new play structures. We expect to get the final “green light” in the morning, and until then our largest play structure is wrapped up like a present. Once it is unwrapped and the caution tape comes down, the students will be free to enjoy. Check out some great pics here, and, be sure to check out the front flower beds. Some of our ambitious crew weeded the beds and restored them beautifully for fall!

    Shout Outs:

    - to “The A Team” of Parents, students, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends from college, and Mr. Lundin. This project was merely a plan until you all made it come together. If I try to thank you all by name, I surely would leave someone out, but you know who you are, and I am so, so grateful for the work you did Saturday (and even Friday evening).

    - to our PTO, for feeding the hungry volunteers Saturday, AND for feeding our teachers breakfast last Thursday. It was the perfect way to start our day and it kept our teachers fueled all the way through Back to School Night.

    - to the PfISD Grounds Crew. These gentlemen have bent over backwards, always with supportive attitudes to help execute the plan and the majority of the heavy work required to install our playground. Special thanks to Mario Bracamontez, PfISD Grounds Supervisor, for his time, attention, and expertise.

    - to Coach Lundin and Coach Doty, who were honored at Austin City Hall this past Friday by Mayor Steve Adler for earning Rowe Lane the “Healthiest School Award.” Outstanding!

    - to the newest members of the Campus Advisory Council, who graciously volunteered their time to serve our school this year through strategic planning and reflection. Invaluable feedback already.

We get to catch our breaths this week, but please read on for some announcements and reminders regarding the weeks ahead.

    Ben

New face in the Front Office

Mrs. Huerta has accepted a full time position at Kelly Lane Middle School, and while we dearly will miss Ms. Dora, we are excited to welcome Javonna McWilliams to the front office staff. Mrs. McWilliams is quickly getting up to speed on our systems, but please do introduce – and reintroduce – yourselves when you stop by so she can begin the work of becoming familiar with all our families.

    Playground!

We did it! Installation was completed, and our students are set to enjoy some brand new playground equipment. Since the playground will be a more popular draw than before, I need to take this opportunity to inform/remind everyone that our Extended Day Program runs Monday through Friday until 6:30pm and does make use of the playground. Because they are a licensed daycare facility, the playground must be reserved exclusively for our EDP students’ use from 3:00-6:30pm. Please help me in reminding our children that they may not use the playground after school during the week.

    Enrichment Recruitment

We are gearing up for our 7th Year of Enrichment, and we are calling on all parents and community members to help sponsor a club. See the attached Enrichment Intro letter for details, and please email Johanna.Dorris@pfisd.net if you would be willing to help out.

    Pfall Pfreak Out, Oct. 21

Our Pfall Pfreak Out is our school carnival, complete with rides, games, and fun for the whole family. The entire event is organized by our PTO and the funds raised drive the PTO initiatives for the entire year. Save the date to join us for the afternoon!

    Public Meeting, Sep. 27

On Wednesday, September 27, at 4:00pm in the library, a public meeting will be held to review Rowe Lane’s most recent accountability rating and campus improvement plan objectives. All are welcome to attend.

Spirit Night at Panda Express, Sep. 28

Choose Panda Express for dinner on September 28th between 4:00 and 9:00pm, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to our school! Mark your calendars, and take a break from cooking while you benefit Rowe Lane. Hope to see you there!

    Cost-free Ways to Support RLES

Did you know that you can support Rowe Lane simply by making your ordinary Amazon purchases and designating Rowe Lane Elementary as your Amazon Smile recipient? Simply visit AmazonSmile, add Rowe Lane PTO as the beneficiary, and shop as usual. Amazon donates a percentage back to our school! Also, many employers have corporate sponsorship or volunteer incentives to benefit schools. Is yours one of them? If so, we hope you will consider directing resources back our way!

    Rocket Families,

At long last, I believe we have everything in place for our Playground build this Saturday. We will close the playground this Friday so that our grounds crew can move woodchips and dib post holes. We will be ready to construct and place the new playground equipment on Saturday, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

We could use all the assistance we can get, and it would be great if you are able to bring tools, (power drills, ratchets, bit drivers, pliers, wrenches, hammers, sledge hammers, rakes, shovels, 5-gallon buckets, etc.) and any spare 2x4” pieces of lumber (8 or 10 feet in length) and tent stakes to steady our structures while the concrete sets.

Thank you for your patience, and I cannot wait to see the excitement on our kids’ faces when the project is complete.

Hoping to see you this evening for Back to School Night!

    Ben

    Rocket Families,

First off, thank you for your generosity with a stream of donations that came in to Rowe Lane these past two weeks. We were able to load a truck with our friends from Keller Williams and the Salvation Army filled with much needed items bound for some of the hard-hit communities outside the greater Houston area. At this very hour, watching yet another devastating event unfold in Florida, there is solace knowing that communities like this stand ready to assist.

It was wonderful seeing so many smiles on our Rockets’ faces this past Friday for our Grandparents’ Day lunch. We always have a tremendous turn out, and we are hoping to exceed that attendance this Thursday for our Back to School Night.

Many happenings this week, so read on for more details on the events ahead,

Back to School Night, THIS Thursday

On Thursday, September 14, from 6-7pm, all parents are invited to visit with their child’s teacher to learn more about the learning journey your child will have this year. We will have two, identical, back-to-back sessions at 6:00pm and at 6:30pm in your child’s teacher’s classroom. At 7:00pm in the library, Mrs. Spurlin will host an information session for anyone interested in learning about the Gifted and Talented nomination process.

    Rocket Families,

This first Week of School has been exceptional for a number of reasons. First off, thank you to for giving generously to our Salvation Army drive. Our foyer overfloweth with donations that will be directed to the Hurricane Harvey Relief effort. Please keep it coming! A detailed list of specific items we are collecting through this Friday is available at the RLES PTO Facebook page.

Second, in spite of our traffic challenges, our children are arriving to school safe, and the vast majority are arriving before or around 7:20 a.m. to allow for an easy transition into learning for the day. I know that requires a concerted effort by the adults at home, and I want you to know it makes a big difference here at school.

We have a shorter but eventful week ahead, starting with our first PTO meeting of the year. We especially would like parents of new Rockets to attend and learn more about how our amazing PTO supports and drives many of the great things at Rowe Lane.

Read on for more details on the events ahead,

    Ben

    PTO Meeting, this Tuesday

Come on out to our first PTO Meeting of the year! Simply by having a child at Rowe Lane, you are an automatic member of the PTO. We will lay out the course for the year, and there are plenty of opportunities for various levels of support and involvement. See you Tuesday, September 5, from 6:30-7:30pm in the Rowe Lane Library. Child care is provided free-of-charge by our Hendrickson HS Honor Society for elementary school-age children.

    Meet the Superintendent, this Wednesday

The PfISD community is invited to a reception for Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Doug Killian, from 4:30-6:30pm Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Rock Gym. More information here.

    Grandparents’ Day, this Friday

We celebrate Grandparents’ Day at Rowe Lane with an invitation for Grandparents to visit their grandchild during the student’s regularly scheduled lunch time. Grandparents are welcome to bring a lunch or purchase a lunch through our cafeteria. A reminder that although adults are not allowed to eat in the school cafeteria, we will have special seating available in the foyer, the science lab, and the library. Which brings us to the next item…

    Volunteers for Grandparents Day

We could use some volunteers to help us with seating and directing our visitors. If you can help for a shift, please sign-up at this link. Whether you will be able to help at this event or not, please be sure to complete a Volunteer application online if you have not done so for this school year. Volunteer approval needs to be completed online annually, and it can take a few days to a few weeks for approval.

Urban Air Spirit Night, Sep. 11

Come out next Monday night for some active family fun at our first Rowe Lane Spirit Night! From 4-8pm, all are invited to hang out with classmates and other Rowe Lane Families. There are two options for Urban Air. See you there!

Back to School Night, Sep. 14

On Thursday, September 14, from 6-7pm, all parents are invited to visit with their child’s teacher to learn more about the learning journey your child will have this year.

    Change to Dismissal Schedule

We test drove a different dismissal routine and schedule last week, and we are making it official for the remainder of the school year. It should make very little difference to parents on the receiving end, but for your reference, here are the new dismissal times:

    2:41, 2nd grade

    2:43, 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades

2:45, PreK, Kinder, and 5th Grade

    First Fire Evacuation

Wednesday morning we will conduct our first fire evacuation drill of the year. We educate our students on how to respond in an emergency situation, and then we practice together in a calm and orderly way. Please know that if visitors are present when we conduct one of our emergency drills (which occur at least monthly), we do require that they participate with us. Typically, our drills last less than ten minutes.

    Volunteer Crossing Guard

If you would be interested in filling in as volunteer crossing guard from September 8 – 15 in the morning and afternoon, please contact Rhonda Butcher in the front office.

    Rocket Families,

Our students have been enjoying their regular, full-day schedules today including some sunshine and outdoor recess. Day One went very smoothly, and after meeting as a Staff after school, we identified some procedures to adjust, while enjoying some Sonic Drinks courtesy of the PTO. Perfect timing!

    Some things to note:

Parent Drop Off in the Main Hallway Wednesday

Now that students are very with their new classroom and teacher, parents will drop off children at the main cross-hallways. We will prompt our kids to give big “hugs and high fives” at the cross hallway to be sure the is a positive transition.

    Dismissal Times

Today, we are experimenting with dismissing our students at slightly different times. It is a matter of two minutes in most case, but it may help with better exit overall. If we determine it works well, I will communicate out our new dismissal times.

    Traffic Patterns

Attached is a fact sheet on the road safety project underway along the nearest stretch of Rowe Lane. We certainly feel the impact at arrival and dismissal times, and your patience is greatly appreciated.

    Rocket Families,

By now, you should have received an e-mail and phone call from the district informing you that PfISD will observe a two-hour delayed start to school tomorrow.

Here is what our Delayed Start will look like at Rowe Lane:

    - Bus routes will run two hours later than the regular schedule. Regular bus schedules are available here.

    - Our doors will open to students at 9:00 a.m., and students should report to the gym.

    - Students arriving after 9:20 a.m. may walk directly to the teacher’s classroom.

    - Students should arrive by 9:40 a.m. to start the school day.

    - 3rd & 4th-grade students will not attend Specials; otherwise, we will resume our regular schedule at 9:40

-*A clarification for parents of Preschool students: Mrs. Comeau’s PreK class will follow the delayed schedule below. Mrs. Tobias’s Pegasus Role Models may arrive at 9:00 a.m. Mrs. Tobias’s PPCD 1st Session students will attend 9:40-11:40 a.m., and Mrs. Tobias’s PPCD 2nd session students will attend 11:40a.m.-1:40pm

    Indoor Dismissal

In the event of indoor dismissal this week due to rainy conditions, I request that parents please use the car pick-up lane instead of walking up. Dismissal will be slow, but if the majority of our parent pick-ups are in the car line, we can devote more adults in one area to help with a smoother departure. Attached is a map of our dismissal locations.

    dismissal locations

District and campus staff have been at school this weekend ensuring all is well for the first day of school. In case you are wondering, Rowe Lane is all set and will be a very safe and secure place to be no matter the weather conditions. Our focus on Day One will be building strong relationships and setting the foundation for a year of learning. Which pretty much is our focus each and every day ;)

Please allow yourselves ample time for a safe and smiling arrival tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing you soon, and please read on for some important information on the days ahead.

    Bus Riders

A reminder that students who are in PreK, Kinder, or 1st grade must be met at their bus stop by an approved adult. Students who do not have an approved adult at the bus stop will be returned to campus, and transportation privileges may be suspended or revoked upon repeat occurrences.

Monday, September 4, is a school holiday for students and staff

All parents and students are invited to Meet the Teacher tomorrow, Thursday, August 24 from 4:00 – 5:00pm. This is a casual, come-and-go event simply to meet your child’s teacher and see the classroom.

    Rocket Families,

We are a week away from the start of a new school year, and you can feel the energy rising around Rowe Lane. Our teachers have been busy since last Wednesday preparing to engage your child in learning this year. This will be another full week of learning for our teachers and staff in anticipation of Meet the Teacher night Thursday. This week, we send a HUGE shout out to Hill Country Bible Church, who volunteered many hands to help our teachers prepare classrooms. Thank you for the hours of time and effort you saved our teachers!

In case you missed it, school begins on a Monday this year, and we will have doors open on Monday, August 28, at 7:10 a.m. for the First Day of School! Looking forward to seeing everyone – perhaps several times – within the next 7 days.

    Ben

    Solar Eclipse Viewing

Monday’s partial eclipse will be a fun, rare occurrence AND a great opportunity for our students to appreciate some key concepts they learn about how objects move in the sky. Our Pflugerville Public Library is hosting an event to celebrate the event. Tips to share with your child regarding how to enjoy the partial eclipse safely wherever they are can be found here.

    Teacher Lists Posted THIS Wednesday

We have had another busy summer of enrolling new students, and class assignments nearly are complete. Teachers will send an email this Wednesday afternoon around 5:00pm to parents introducing themselves and welcoming our students to the 2017-2018 school year. We also will post class lists on the cafeteria windows at 5:00pm.

    Meet the Teacher, THIS Thursday

Parents and students are invited this Thursday, August 24, from 4:00 – 5:00pm. This is an informal tradition for students to meet their teacher and see their classroom before school starts. Students are welcome to drop off their school supplies (pre-ordered supplies through PTO already have arrived). Our fabulous PTO plans to provide cool treats for all our families in the cafeteria. If you are new to the Rowe Lane family, Mr. O’Connor invites you to stay for a brief “Rowe Lane 101” conversation at 5:00pm to help orient you and get you plugged in to the many happenings at our school. Hope to see you there!

Playground Community Build Day, THIS Saturday

Our playground equipment is scheduled to be delivered this week, and we could use your help this Saturday, August 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00pm for our community build day – an opportunity for parents and students to roll up sleeves and put the final touches on this project! Our PfISD grounds crew will take care of all digging of post holes, but we would love as many helping hands as possible to assemble, place, and pour footings for our new equipment. Come be part of the Big Build!

    3rd Graders Proof of Residency

A reminder that PfISD requires updates of student records throughout a student’s enrollment. In elementary school, all 3rd graders will need to provide proof of residence at the start of this school year. Thank you to those who already have taken care of this. Proof of residence may be provided in the front office beginning this Thursday, August 3. Please contact Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net with questions.

Our test message was sent out a few minutes ago. Our intent was that parents received an email and a phone call at the primary contact email addresses and phone numbers you provided. As I wrote earlier this week, your child’s teacher will use this same information next Wednesday, August 23 to send a welcome email. We also will post class lists on the cafeteria windows at 5:00pm next Wednesday, August 23.

If you did not receive an email or phone call, please check your SPAM folders of your email first. If you determine the message did not reach you, please email Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net with your child’s name and the updated contact information.
