    Rocket Families,

This Saturday was a busy one at Rowe Lane. We held our Community Garage sale, which earned over $1100 toward our playground equipment goal! Shout outs to Girl Scout Troop 2500 and Melanie Serpersu for organizing and supervising the effort, and a shout out to the Holland Family for toting away all our remaining donations to the Salvation Army. Many will benefit from this effort!

We capped the afternoon with a closing performance of School House Rock, Jr! I cannot tell you how proud I am of our students. After months of commitment and hard work they succeeded in producing a superb performance that is uncommon for students their age. My hat goes off to our teachers, Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Stukey, for putting their talents to work in order to showcase those of our kids. Shout outs to Mrs. Rhodes-Leake, Mrs. Benavides, and Shannon Doty for volunteering their time and who were instrumental in achieving this undertaking. Bravo!

This week is Teacher Appreciation week, and I am so grateful for the team of educators we have at Rowe Lane. Our teachers are grateful to our wonderful PTO who has organized a Cinco de Mayo Luncheon to treat our staff. Follow this link to donate some items to the cause, and check out the PTO Facebook page for some suggestions they have for honoring teachers each day this week.

Read on for more details on the merry month of May ahead!

    Rocket-thon May 19

For the past few years, there has been interest in conducting a student jog-a-thon to raise funds through pledges for our school. Well, we are giving it a shot! There are several organizations who will conduct the event for a fee, but we are going to create and customize the experience with a target of closing the remaining gap on our $10,000 goal toward playground equipment – we are more than halfway there! Students will have the opportunity to participate during the school day on May 19, either before or after their Field Day activities. Look for details coming soon!

    Rocket Families,

Today I find myself counting the reasons I love being a part of Rowe Lane. Shout outs go to the Thomas Family, who organized our 1st Responders Day Friday morning and to the Longoria Family for organizing Saturday’s Beautify Rowe Lane work day. Thank you, thank you to the many hard workers who transformed our landscape Saturday morning. Incredible effort, Rockets!

    Parents,

One thing we request and rely upon this time of year is a completed “Intent to Return Form” for every child in grades Kinder – 4th. Having this information allows us to plan and staff appropriately for the coming year, which is critical to serving our children best. If you have not yet had a chance to complete and return yours, please do so ASAP or send a quick message to your child’s teacher. In the event that the form did not reach you, please email our registrar, Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net so that we can assist you.

    Appreciatively,

    Ben

    Rocket Families,

I trust the three-day weekend was good to you and yours. We have some firsts coming up this week at Rowe Lane: Spirit Night at Zaxby's, First Responders Day for the students on Friday, and Beautify Rowe Lane for Earth Day this Saturday. All three occasions are celebrations of the connections between our school and this amazing community. I hope you have a chance to stop by Wednesday and Saturday, and again, please share with your neighbors that the lights and vehicles on display around our school Friday morning is no cause for alarm.

Finally, here again is the link to our PTO positions for the coming year: https://goo.gl/OkvBLt. We have some outstanding teammates returning, but each year we need new faces and ideas, including leadership Chairs. Please read the welcome message and peruse the descriptions of each position to see where you can lend your talents and efforts!

    Rocket Families,

We had two, big events this week, so shout outs go to our parent volunteers who manned shifts throughout the week and late into the evening for Family Book Fair Night. We had a hard time keeping popular titles on the shelves, which bodes well for our Rowe Lane Readers! Our second shout out goes to our PTO and Fine Arts Committee for organizing Fine Arts Night. It was a spectacular celebration of our students and the arts, and a ton of fun!

Ballots are open for leadership positions and committees for next year’s Rocket PTO. We have so many great programs that only are possible through the support of our PTO members. Simply by being a parent of a student at Rowe Lane, you automatically are a member. Check out this link to see how you can get connected to some of the wonderful opportunities we provide our children.

*Special note: Mrs. Rebecek, principal of Mott Elementary, will make a contribution to the weekly Update each week for our future Mott Owls. Scroll to the bottom for her message.

    Rocket Families,

First, please keep in mind that we have State Testing on-campus this Tuesday and Wednesday, which means we will be a closed campus to non-staff. We have modified staff assignments and schedules throughout the building, and as such visitors will be allowed only in the main office on those days. Please plan lunch visits, classroom visits, or volunteer activities for Monday, Thursday, or Friday this week.

Two shout outs: First, to Mr. Martinez, who volunteered his architecture skills to create a surreal set piece for our upcoming Musical performance of School House Rock, Junior in April. Without giving too much away before the show, let me just say… WOW! Second, we are more than $1,000 closer to our new playground equipment goals because of an incredibly generous donation from one of our families this past week. They insisted on anonymity, but I must at least send out a public THANK YOU.

Mostly, we are keeping things pretty quiet and uneventful after school this week. If you have 4th or 5th graders, a good night’s sleep, a nutritious breakfast, and a hug on the way to school are all they really need on test days. Our teachers have prepared our students well, and know how to take care of the kids on these days once they are at school.

Read on for events and details coming up,

    Ben

    Student Attendance Counts

Researchers and educators agree that student attendance is a significant indicator of a child’s success in school. Because of this, we are required to act whenever a child misses 10 days of school or is on-pace to miss 10 days for the year. Illnesses are unavoidable and keeping a sick child home is a must; therefore, we encourage parents to be thoughtful of this when scheduling vacations, appointments, and other events that may require a student to miss all or part of a school day.

Special Note regarding Current 4th Graders Zoned to Mott for 2017-2018

Please be aware that current 4th grade students zoned to Mott Elementary for next year are allowed to “be grandfathered” and complete their fifth grade year at Rowe Lane. However, you

must apply for a transfer to do so, and the clause does not apply to younger siblings. Please see the attachment and the information at this link:

    Rocket Families,

Welcome back! I trust the past week has been rejuvenating to your family, and I am eager to see our students again.

March is Women’s History Month, and in the spirit of raising and educating the next generation of amazing women, I am passing on a couple of recommended reads I enjoy sharing with my own daughter:

Strong is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves – by Kate T. Parker

    - love this one for the beautiful montage of girls from every walk of life, proud and confident in who they are.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women – by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

    - the stories of 100 historic, heroic women, each told as a “bedtime story” in a single page with a vibrant illustration.

Plenty of upcoming events, so read on for more details of the weeks ahead, and be sure to scroll to the bottom for information on our upcoming Book Fair!
