    Rocket Families,

We have much happening and a couple big events ahead this week. First, it is Book Fair week beginning Wednesday and running through the following Wednesday. This is a great opportunity to reinforce your child’s love of literature, support our teachers in keeping their classroom libraries current, and help Mrs. Stewart keep our library stocked with books and resources. We make the Book Fair a family affair at RLES with extended hours during Family Night. This will coincide with a favorite evening event, our Fine Arts Night on Thursday. Suffice to say, Rowe Lane is the place to be this Thursday evening!

Looking forward to seeing you at one or several of the happenings this week.

    Rocket Families,

So much to be proud of and thankful for this week! Our students showed off their talents at regional and state competitions, and our community rallied around our Fun Run for VR event. At last count, our total pledges had reached over $12,000! Thank you for your generous support of our students, and please send in any checks ASAP so that we can finalize our count. Our Rockets had an absolute blast on Friday and ran their hearts out to make good on their part of the effort. If you have not already done so, check out the PTO Facebook page for pics and videos. Shout outs go to our fabulous PTO for organizing the effort and to the Specials Team and Office Team for honoring the school incentives and keeping the energy high all week.

Shout outs also go to Rowe Lane’s Math Pentathlon Kinder and 1st grade students who competed this weekend and brought home bronze, silver, and gold medals! I also had the privilege of escorting one of our Destination Imagination teams to the State competition in Arlington this weekend where they represented our school well against other champions from around Texas. Rowe Lane truly is an exceptional school, and I am so grateful to our teacher and parent sponsors who make these experiences possible and enrich our students’ education.

A reminder that STAAR testing will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday for 4th and 5th graders. If our kids arrive smiling with confidence, well-rested, and fed they will have everything they need for the morning. While the day is mostly business as usual for the rest of our students, please know that we do have to rearrange staff assignments on these days to administer the tests and cannot accommodate volunteers and visitors as a result.

    Rockets,

I wanted to take a moment this weekend and brag on our teachers. Ever since PfISD secured new laptops and tablets for our students in the last Bond election, RLES has been part of the vanguard for what we call “Blended Learning.” Our emphasis this year has been to help our students develop skills to lead their own learning. This month, as a culmination of that work, all teachers have designed lessons that truly put our students in the drivers’ seats. If you hear any feedback from the kids around the dinner table, we certainly would love to hear about it as well.

As it happens, last week I had the privilege of attending a conference to discuss with other school leaders from around the state how best to meet the needs of the 21st century learners we serve. This week District and Campus leaders are stopping by Rowe Lane to check out how our students use technology to research, collaborate, problem-solve, and create. Our ultimate goal is to prepare our students to be learners and leaders of tomorrow, able to form their own knowledge and tackle issues we cannot predict. It’s mind-stretching work at times, and I am grateful to this team every day.

Thank you for the many ways you support RLES and set your child up for success each day. To assist you, please note the few items below, and be sure to act quickly if you would like to secure tickets to this year’s Musical. Have a great week.

Read Across America Day, THIS Friday

March 2nd is Read Across America Day, and at Rowe Lane we will be celebrating literature and the gift of life-long reading in part by inviting students to dress as their favorite storybook character. Costumes may not include weapons or any inappropriate depictions. Please help emphasize and ensure to your child that we are dressing only as characters from literature, which would not include characters from television, movies, etc.

    Rocket Families,

After an event-packed start to February, we have a relatively routine week ahead culminating with Spirit Night at Urban Air Friday.

A shout out to our Hospitality Committee who treated the Rowe Lane staff to lunch to a delicious lasagna lunch this past Friday. You spoil us!

Urban Air Spirit Night THIS Friday

On Friday, February 23, we will host a spirit night at Urban Air from 6-8:30pm. A percentage of all proceeds goes back to our school, and even if you cannot make it that evening, THIS LINK allows you to purchase the same discounted pass for use at another time! Pick up your pass today!

Girl Day at UT THIS Saturday

The University of Texas at Austin will open its doors this Saturday as part of a campaign to introduce our young women to fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Check out the following site to learn more about this free event: https://girlday.utexas.edu/

    Front Office Notices

Did you know we have some different incentives to encourage our students to be here on time, every day? Students who have perfect attendance for the 9-weeks are recognized at our Awards Assemblies for grades 2 – 5. Students who are at school all day every day of the 9 weeks (no absences, no late arrivals (tardy), no early pick-ups) get to play BINGO on a Friday afternoon with classmates and have a chance to earn prizes.

When your child is absent for personal illness please remember to send to your child’s teacher and madeline.sheppard@pfisd.net a doctor’s note, a hand-written note, or an email within 3 days upon return to school. Parent notes turned in after 3 days will be notated but the absence will remain unexcused. In order to be excused, the note should contain the following information:

    1) Today’s date

    2) Your child’s full name, grade, and teacher’s name

    3) Detailed reason for absence and date(s) of absence(s)

    4) Parent’s name and best contact phone number

It truly helps if students’ dentist/doctor appointments are scheduled later in the day when possible.  PfISD’s official attendance is taken each day between 9:20 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.  Scheduling appointments later in the day and vacations or family trips during district holidays does make a significantly positive impact for Pflugerville. Thank you for your assistance with this piece, and please let me know if RLES can assist in making sure your child is in school and learning as much as possible this year!

Those who were able to attend the 100th day of School Celebration Friday evening enjoyed seeing our RLES Gym transformed into a glow-in-the-dark dance hall. Shout outs go to the Glow Crew, and all our teacher and parent volunteers who helped with this fun event. We appreciate your patronage of the event which helps us toward our goal of acquiring a class set of VR headsets this spring that will be used for exciting new learning opportunities such as Google Expeditions. If attendance at the Glow Party was any indication, we are well on our way to the goal!

    Kindness Week

All this week we are celebrating kindness, and our Rocket Student Council has created a different theme for each day:

Monday – “Nothing beats kindness!” – Wear your favorite sports shirt.

Tuesday – “Look at someone in a new way today…make a new friend!” – Wear sunglasses.

Wednesday – “Be extra polite to someone today!” – Wear something fancy.

Thursday – “The inside is all that counts!” – Wear crazy clothes.

Friday – “Powered by kindness!” – Dress up as your favorite super hero.

    Valentine’s Parties THIS Tuesday

Class parties are scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, at various times as communicated by your child’s teacher. A general reminder that just as with birthday treats, only store-bought, pre-packaged food may be shared with students. The reason is safety. Many of our students have food allergies or may need to know calorie and sugar content for health reasons. In particular, peanuts/tree nuts are strongly discouraged on campus and even strictly forbidden in some classrooms. Thank you in advance for ensuring an inclusive class party this Valentine’s Day.

Green Apple Deposit Day THIS Wednesday

Our partners at A+ Credit Union will be in the front foyer this Wednesday to receive deposits from any students enrolled or interested in beginning an early savers account. A+ has provided financial literacy lessons to our students each year and has great free resources available to students and adults. Say hello on your way in this Wednesday!

    Rockets,

Great things are happening at Rowe Lane, and several events are lined up for this week. Our PTO meets this Tuesday, and there will be some big decisions made with how funds are directed to support teaching and learning at Rowe Lane as well as what our targets will be for spring fundraising. We would love to have strong representation from as many parents as possible at the meeting.

Spirit Night @ Raising Canes THIS Monday

On February 5th, from 5-9pm, swing by Raising Canes for dinner and support Rowe Lane. Simply mention you are there for spirit night and a percentage of your purchase will be donated back to our school.

PTO Meeting and TAPR Public Meeting THIS Tuesday

Our PTO meeting will be this Tuesday, from 6:30 – 7:30pm. At 6:00pm immediately before the PTO meeting in the library, Mr. O’Connor will host a public meeting for hearing Rowe Lane’s 2016-2017 Texas Academic  Performance Report. Anyone is welcome to join the review and discussion of last year’s performance on state testing and the demographic information within the report.

    Global School Play Day

Rowe Lane will be participating for the first time this year in Global School Play Day! Over the past two years, parents and teachers have discussed the important role that unstructured play provides our children which led to additional recess time. Beginning this week and throughout the month, each grade level has selected a half day or day dedicated to student-led play. To learn more about the event, visit www.globalschoolplayday.com.

    Choir Concert THIS Thursday

Our Rowe Lane Choir performs this Thursday at 6:30 on the stage. Come on out to support this talented group of students. We will see and hear them more clearly than ever before thanks to our recent upgrades to the sound and lighting systems on our stage.

Glow Party: Dance and Pizza THIS Friday

We are in need of a few more volunteers http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4daea628a5f85-rles1 to help us celebrate being 100 days smarter with your family and friends! The Glow Party is on February 9th 6:30-8:30pm and will feature music and dancing in the gym. Pre-order forms for the Family Package (includes 1 large pizza, 4 drinks, and 6 glow items) were due last Friday, but additional glow items, pizza by the slice, and other concession items will be available for purchase at the party.

    Valentine’s Day Reminders

The frequency of messages ordinarily would be no more than 5 to 10 per month. To sign-up, simply follow the instructions at this link: https://www.remind.com/join/rlescommun
