    Rocket Families,

We had a highly productive Friday at Rowe Lane thanks to 25 Weiss High School students participating as part of PfISD's Big Event. Our Wolf volunteers helped paint our new shed, painted a new sensory walk as an addition to the playground, weeded flower beds, spread mulch around all trees, and even helped prepare learning materials and pack up the book fair. A thousand thanks to WHS and the Big Event!

Shout outs once again to our phenomenal PTO Hospitality committee for the delicious sandwich bar last Friday and to the Book Fair Committee and volunteers for setting up and helping to run our Book Fair all last week. Thanks for helping to fuel our teachers the love of reading at Rowe Lane.

A reminder this Friday, March 15 is a holiday for students which means spring break starts a day earlier. School will resume Monday, March 25. Read on for details of our four-day week ahead.

    Rocket Families,

Spring and winter seem to be battling it out this week weather-wise, and I am hoping the cold snap might remind some of our students to search the lost and found for their coats, hats, sweatshirts, or jackets. We have many items in the lost and found, and the time is drawing near for us to have to clear out the lost and found. If you are on campus at all this week, we encourage you to take a look through our lost and found collection in the cafeteria.

A shout out to the PTO for hosting another delicious teacher preview after school Friday as a kick off to this week’s book fair. Come on by the book fair during the day or during Family Book Fair Night this Thursday from 5-8pm to pick up some great reads for your child or donate a selection from your teacher’s wish list.

    Stay warm!

    Rocket Families,

Congratulations to our Destination Imagination teams who represented Rowe Lane and PfISD yesterday at the Central TX Regional tournament. We even had one of our teams, the Smart Cookies, place 2nd overall in the Engineering competition. Way to go, Rowe!

We are celebrating reading at the end of this week. Students are welcome to dress as book characters on Friday, March 1, for Read Across America Day. Guidelines for costumes simply are to select a school-appropriate character from literature. Restrictions include: no masks (we need to be able to recognize our students), no weapons, and nothing that would appear scary to our youngest preschool students. Participation of course is optional, but we encourage all students to help us celebrate reading this Friday.

The following week we will host the Scholastic Book Fair in the library. Read on below for how you can help with the teacher preview event tis Friday or with volunteering next week.

    Rocket Families,

First, thank you to our PTO Hospitality committee for organizing the delicious luncheon last Friday – the perfect way to launch us into Presidents’ Day Weekend! While our students will have Presidents' Day off, our teachers will be engaged with professional learning. We look forward to seeing the kids Tuesday.

As of today we have closed out the American Heart Association Fundraiser. Coaches Lundin and Doty would like to extend a huge thank you to the RLES community for the support. We successfully raised over $6,000 and more importantly started many conversations about heart health awareness. Our students have done a tremendous job for a really good cause, and thanks to them many deserving individuals will receive the help they desperately need. Well done Rockets!

Finally, attached to this message is a notice of our public meeting scheduled for 6:00pm Tuesday, March 5th, immediately before the PTO meeting. For anyone interested, this will be an opportunity to learn more about the accountability reports schools receive and how Rowe Lane's data looked for 2018. Anyone is welcome to attend

    Rocket Families,

We closed out last week by observing International Day of Play, a movement geared toward embracing the benefits of unstructured play for children of all ages. It was a timely event given the sub-freezing temps we experienced that day preventing outdoor recess.

We have seen a marked decline in attendance due to illness this past week, and we have been emphasizing hygeine with our students while taking extra measures to prevent the spread of germs. A reminder that our students must stay home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Our Registrar, Mrs. Barnette, has a post on the PTO Facebook page related to how to document absences.

    Rocket Families,

I hope you enjoyed the three-day weekend, and I hope our students appreciated the reason for the occasion. Each year I reflect on where I see evidence of Dr. King’s dream becoming realized and where we still have work to do. Overwhelmingly, I am tremendously proud and hopeful for what our Rockets will bring to this world in the years to come. Thank you for fostering strong values at home that help to elevate so much good at RLES.

Last week I wrote of ways for new Rowe Lane families to become connected to the RLES community. This week, I want to underscore important safety need-to-knows regarding arrival and dismissal. First, students are not allowed to be dropped off in the parking lot – they must be escorted by an adult to the crosswalk. Second, the bus lane on the south side (Speidel side) of the building is for staff member parking and bus loading and unloading – other vehicles may not enter the bus loop any time buses are present. Lastly, I am hearing reports that the intersection of Jackie’s Ranch Blvd. and Martin Ln. is becoming increasingly busy. If your child uses this route to school, you might consider checking in to see that he or she knows how to cross safely without the assistance of a crossing guard.

Our traffic remains a challenge in our neighborhood, and please know that our crossing guards and morning safety team routinely refine practices and are regarded as the model standard during area training sessions. Your courtesy and good example each and every morning matter a great deal as well. Whatever helps ensure you arrive with patience and remain alert and undistracted in our school zone helps ensure the safety of all our Rockets. Thanks!

Hope to see everyone this Thursday for the Science Night festivities. Read on for additional events and notifications.

    Rocket Families,

We had a very full four-day week to start off 2019, and we also welcomed 16 new Rockets to the halls of Rowe Lane! If you are one of our new parents, I encourage you to click on each of the hyperlinks below my name at the end of this message and plug in to this exceptional community. Additionally, you can make connections with neighborhood families and find answers to non-school-related questions via the Rowe Lane Rocket Families Facebook page.

    Midyear Survey
We would love your feedback on a few items that are very important to us. Please take just a few minutes in the next few days to complete this survey. Your input will help guide our Campus Advisory Committee’s work. Thank you!

    Green Apple Deposit THIS Wednesday
Students who have an Early Savers account with A+ Federal Credit Union can make deposits in the foyer this Wednesday during morning arrival. All students are welcome to stop by the table to learn more about becoming a financially literate consumer.

2nd Nine Weeks Award Assembly THIS Friday
This coming Friday morning students in grades 2 through 5 will assemble to recognize some of our students’ accomplishments from the 2nd Nine Weeks. Parents are welcome but should feel no obligation to attend as space in the cafeteria will be limited, and please know that we do not recognize every child at the nine-week assemblies. 4th & 5th grade students assemble from 7:45-8:15 a.m.; 2nd and 3rdgrade students assemble from 8:20-8:45 a.m.

    Science Night Thursday, January 24th
Save the date for one of our most popular evening events, Science Night! Activities from local scientists in all the scientific fields will be represented, and families will be invited to get “hands-on” with scientific concepts and experiments, demonstrations, and a photo booth. We will have something for scientists of all ages. The event runs 6:00-7:00 pm, and the Science Fair Awards Assembly will follow at 7:00 pm in the gym.

    Glow Dance Party Feb. 1
Celebrate 100 days of school with your PreK-2nd grade friends. Pizza & Glow Item info coming soon! https://www.facebook.com/events/273728146643578/

Youth Code Jam ATX, Feb. 2
Youth Code Jam is excited to bring a family coding event to Austin Saturday, February 2, from 1-4pm at the Austin Central Library located at 710 West Cesar Chavez, Austin, Texas. The event is open to all K-12 students and their parents/guardian. We ask that families to bring their own laptops, BUT if students don’t have a laptop available from home, we do have ones to borrow on a first come, first served basis. There will be coding for every age and every level (even beginners!). More information about Youth Code Jam is HERE. Space is limited, so ensure your place by registering soon using the Sign up to attend link.

    Clarification with Field Trips
Parents, the question was raised recently about whether students may be signed out by parents who accompany their child on the trip prior to the students returning on the bus to school. Students may only be signed out in the front office, and students must ride the bus back to school after the field trip. Typically, buses return to school by 2:00pm and our schedule resumes for the remainder of the day.

    Absences
There is a clear connection between regular school attendance and your child’s learning. We put a great deal of effort into helping our children remain healthy and happy at school so that they are able and eager to attend. When a child is sick and must be home, we ask that you please contact the teacher that day if possible. A doctor note or parent note should be brought to school when your child returns, and an email from you to the teacher and our registrar, Quinlyn.Barnette@pfisd.net, is acceptable for a parent note.

    Family Trips & Vacations
Another way we can ensure regular attendance is by scheduling family trips and vacation on holidays and long weekends aligned to theschool calendar. PfISD is a District of Innovation and was able to revise our schedule and school calendar as a result. Please review the2018-2019 school calendar closely as some anticipated days off, ½ days, or holidays may be different than expected. Unnecessary absence from school creates difficulty for students, parents, and teachers, and we would like to avoid these occurrences whenever possible. Please feel free to reach out to the front office with any questions or to request school work due to a planned absence.

    Rocket Families,

This afternoon I had the pleasure of attending our Destination Imagination workshop hosted by one of our PfISD teams. This opportunity was made possible in part by our PTO, who helped to sponsor the teams who went to Global Finals last year. In turn, the teams shared their learning and tips with this year’s students, parents, and team managers. The experience underscored not only the strong community throughout PfISD, but also how grateful I am that Rowe Lane is able to offer our students many extracurricular experiences to enrich their education. Destination Imagination, Chess Club and our University Interscholastic League Teams, Math Pentathlon, Jump Rope Team, Choir, our Broadway Jr! Musical, and Enrichment Clubs – all of these opportunities are made possible because of committed adults who volunteer their time and resources. Thank you for helping to make Rowe Lane a very special school.

I am also very proud to share with you that late last Friday the Junior League of Austin contacted us to congratulate Rowe Lane for once again collecting more coats than any other elementary school in Central Texas for the annual Coats for Kids Drive! Many children will be warmed this winter because of your effort and generosity. A special shout out to Ms. Barela, who took the lead for our campus in organizing and advertising the coat drive. Follow this link to learn more about how your donation will be put to use this Saturday at Distribution Day, and follow this link to learn how your child might receive a coat. Way to go, Rowe!

    Rockets,

Pfall Pfreak Out has arrived! A reminder that Tuesday is the last day to pre-order your wristband at this link for a discount. The Pfreak Out is one of our most well-attended events of the year, appeals to all ages, is open to friends, neighbors, and anyone who would like to support an incredible Parent Teacher Organization in supporting our Rockets. In the past year, our PTO sponsored two family-friendly dances, provided a class set of virtual reality headsets for students to embark on Google Expeditions, organized luncheons for our hard-working staff, just to name a few.

This weekend, the PTO oversaw the installation of a new storage shed to help us free up some much-needed space in the school – at no cost! A huge shout out to Rosie Thornock who applied for a Lowe’s grant on Rowe Lane’s behalf and for identifying yet another generous partner in our community. Thank you to our adult volunteers whose time and effort allow us to forego traditional fundraisers that ask families to sell items to friends, neighbors, and family. Instead, I am proud that Rowe Lane is able to fundraise by creating experiences that genuinely engage our community and provide a bit of fun in exchange for the financial support that drives many things that set our school apart.

A reminder that while we do not where costumes at school for Halloween, we do encourage all students to dress up each day this week as we observe Red Ribbon Week. See below for that schedule and some important information on the week ahead.

    Ben

    Red Ribbon Week THIS Week

This week we celebrate Red Ribbon week and will be encouraging our students to make healthy choices and live a drug-free life. Our dress up themes by day are as follows:

Monday – Dress like a tourist.

    Tuesday – Wear Hawaiian clothes.

    Wednesday – Pajama day.

Thursday – Dress like a rock star.

    Friday – Wear neon colors.

Flu Clinic Make-Up Session THIS Tuesday

We have rescheduled our flu clinic for this Tuesday, October 30. Students we missed October 1st and who already have submitted parent permission are scheduled to receive the immunization. If you had submitted a permission slip for your child to receive the immunization at school earlier this month, but your child already has had his or her flu shot, please call us to let us know your child does not need to participate on Tuesday.  Nurse Kim can be reached directly at 512-594-6635.

    Pfall Pfreak Out, THIS Saturday!

Pfall Pfreak Out is here! This November 3rd from 2-6pm we hope you will join us at Rowe Lane for a ton of fun again this year. Tuesday, October 29, is the last day to pre-order wristbands to receive the $10 discount. There are lots of things in store; inflatables, petting zoo, pony rides, games, planetarium, Legion of Foam nerf battles, food trucks, face painting, balloons, henna tattoos, and more! This is our largest fundraiser and empowers our PTO to do so much for the school. In order for it to be successful we need several volunteers. Here is the link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4daea628a5f85-pfall4

Veterans Day Music Performance Nov. 8

As is the tradition at Rowe Lane Elementary, the fourth grade students will be honoring our veterans and service men/women with a patriotic themed program on Thursday, November 8, 2018.  A parent volunteer has offered to create a slide show of photographs to share with the audience.  If you have  pictures of family members you would like to see in the presentation please send them to the email listed below.  Be sure to invite them to the show as well.  There will be two available times for them to be honored – Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 9:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Please send jpg pictures with a message including the veteran’s name and service area to rowelaneyearbook@gmail.com
