    Rocket Families

Those who were able to attend the 100th day of School Celebration Friday evening enjoyed seeing our RLES Gym transformed into a glow-in-the-dark dance hall. Shout outs go to the Glow Crew, and all our teacher and parent volunteers who helped with this fun event. We appreciate your patronage of the event which helps us toward our goal of acquiring a class set of VR headsets this spring that will be used for exciting new learning opportunities such as Google Expeditions. If attendance at the Glow Party was any indication, we are well on our way to the goal!

    Kindness Week

All this week we are celebrating kindness, and our Rocket Student Council has created a different theme for each day:

Monday – “Nothing beats kindness!” – Wear your favorite sports shirt.

Tuesday – “Look at someone in a new way today…make a new friend!” – Wear sunglasses.

Wednesday – “Be extra polite to someone today!” – Wear something fancy.

Thursday – “The inside is all that counts!” – Wear crazy clothes.

Friday – “Powered by kindness!” – Dress up as your favorite super hero.

    Valentine’s Parties THIS Tuesday

Class parties are scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, at various times as communicated by your child’s teacher. A general reminder that just as with birthday treats, only store-bought, pre-packaged food may be shared with students. The reason is safety. Many of our students have food allergies or may need to know calorie and sugar content for health reasons. In particular, peanuts/tree nuts are strongly discouraged on campus and even strictly forbidden in some classrooms. Thank you in advance for ensuring an inclusive class party this Valentine’s Day.

Green Apple Deposit Day THIS Wednesday

Our partners at A+ Credit Union will be in the front foyer this Wednesday to receive deposits from any students enrolled or interested in beginning an early savers account. A+ has provided financial literacy lessons to our students each year and has great free resources available to students and adults. Say hello on your way in this Wednesday!

    Urban Air Spirit Night

On Friday, February 23, we will host a spirit night at Urban Air from 6-8:30pm. A percentage of all proceeds goes back to our school, and even if you cannot make it that evening, THIS LINK allows you to purchase the same discounted pass for use at another time! Pick up your pass today!

    Remind

Several of you may already receive messages, reminders, and updates through Remind. Rowe Lane now has a Remind account that will text you reminders and updates of the most important school-wide events and happenings such as emergencies, Spirit Nights, School Pictures, and approaching deadlines. The frequency of messages ordinarily would be no more than 5 to 10 per month. To sign-up, simply follow the instructions at this link: https://www.remind.com/join/rlescommun

    Front Office Notices

Did you know we have some different incentives to encourage our students to be here on time, every day? Students who have perfect attendance for the 9-weeks are recognized at our Awards Assemblies for grades 2 – 5. Students who are at school all day every day of the 9 weeks (no absences, no late arrivals (tardy), no early pick-ups) get to play BINGO on a Friday afternoon with classmates and have a chance to earn prizes.

When your child is absent for personal illness please remember to send to your child’s teacher and madeline.sheppard@pfisd.net a doctor’s note, a hand-written note, or an email within 3 days upon return to school. Parent notes turned in after 3 days will be notated but the absence will remain unexcused. In order to be excused, the note should contain the following information:

    1) Today’s date

    2) Your child’s full name, grade, and teacher’s name

    3) Detailed reason for absence and date(s) of absence(s)

    4) Parent’s name and best contact phone number

It truly helps if students’ dentist/doctor appointments are scheduled later in the day when possible.  PfISD’s official attendance is taken each day between 9:20 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.  Scheduling appointments later in the day and vacations or family trips during district holidays does make a significantly positive impact for Pflugerville. Thank you for your assistance with this piece, and please let me know if RLES can assist in making sure your child is in school and learning as much as possible this year!

    Rockets,

Great things are happening at Rowe Lane, and several events are lined up for this week. Our PTO meets this Tuesday, and there will be some big decisions made with how funds are directed to support teaching and learning at Rowe Lane as well as what our targets will be for spring fundraising. We would love to have strong representation from as many parents as possible at the meeting.

Spirit Night @ Raising Canes THIS Monday

On February 5th, from 5-9pm, swing by Raising Canes for dinner and support Rowe Lane. Simply mention you are there for spirit night and a percentage of your purchase will be donated back to our school.

PTO Meeting and TAPR Public Meeting THIS Tuesday

At 6:00pm immediately before the PTO meeting in the library, Mr. O’Connor will host a public meeting for hearing Rowe Lane’s 2016-2017 Texas Academic  Performance Report. Anyone is welcome to join the review and discussion of last year’s performance on state testing and the demographic information within the report.

    Global School Play Day

Rowe Lane will be participating for the first time this year in Global School Play Day! Over the past two years, parents and teachers have discussed the important role that unstructured play provides our children which led to additional recess time. Beginning this week and throughout the month, each grade level has selected a half day or day dedicated to student-led play. To learn more about the event, visit www.globalschoolplayday.com.

    Choir Concert THIS Thursday

Our Rowe Lane Choir performs this Thursday at 6:30 on the stage. Come on out to support this talented group of students. We will see and hear them more clearly than ever before thanks to our recent upgrades to the sound and lighting systems on our stage.

Glow Party: Dance and Pizza THIS Friday

We are in need of a few more volunteers http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4daea628a5f85-rles1 to help us celebrate being 100 days smarter with your family and friends! The Glow Party is on February 9th 6:30-8:30pm and will feature music and dancing in the gym. Pre-order forms for the Family Package (includes 1 large pizza, 4 drinks, and 6 glow items) were due last Friday, but additional glow items, pizza by the slice, and other concession items will be available for purchase at the party.

**Apologies for the delay – this week’s Update ended up stranded in my outbox.**

    Rocket Families,

First off, Science Night last Thursday was a literal blast (ask a friend about the UT Physics Circus demonstration if you missed it). I want to thank our many vendors and volunteers, the PTO for their sponsorship of  the event, and a Shout Out to all our Science Fair judges who helped us identify this year’s finalists who will go on to represent Rowe Lane in the Regional Science Fair.

Second, all parents who have updated contact information in Focus should have received a message from PfISD regarding two matters of concern for our students. The first was to raise awareness of a dangerous “challenge” that has gained attention; the second acknowledges that this flu season has been particularly difficult. Please know that we are encouraging frequent hand washing and hygienic habits at school, and I want to reiterate the importance of students remaining home when ill until at least 24 hours of being fever free. Attached is a notice we sent home at the start of the semester, and specifics on how to excuse your child’s absence for illness are at the bottom of this message.

Finally, we need to celebrate. Yesterday many of our Rockets competed at the PfISD UIL Competition at PHS, and over a dozen students placed in the top ten!  A special shout out to two of our Rockets who became District Champions Saturday: Travis Ayer in Social Studies and Katie White in Number Sense. Thank you to our teachers and parents who coached our students in the many events this year. A HUGE congratulations to the entire Rowe Lane team, who brought home the 3rdplace trophy for our school, continuing a tradition of excellence through UIL! Way to go, Rowe!

Read on for the details on our eventful, 4 ½ -day week ahead.

5th Grade Night THIS Monday @ PfISD Middle Schools

Just a reminder that 5th grade parents are invited to Cele Middle School or Kelly Lane Middle School the evening of Monday, January 28, at 6:00pm for an informational meeting on electives, choice sheets, and the transition to middle school.

    School Pictures THIS Tuesday

Spring pictures will be taken this Tuesday, January 30. All students will take a class picture together and an individual picture. Purchase of the pictures is optional, and proofs will be sent home. Pictures for the yearbook were taken in fall. If your child joined us after those pictures were taken, the office staff will take a picture of your child at some point this semester so that he or she can be added to the yearbook.

Elementary Fine Arts Showcase THIS Tuesday

PfISD will showcase the talents of many elementary students at the Fine Arts Showcase on Tuesday, January 30th at the PHS FAC beginning at 5:30 PM. Rowe Lane will be well-represented once again. Even if your child is not participating, I encourage you to take your child to support our Rockets and be inspired by the tremendous talent across PfISD. Kudos to Mr. Bennett and Ms. Gonzales for their work preparing our students for this honor.

    Early Release THIS Wednesday

A reminder that Wednesday, January 31 will be an early release day for all elementary campuses. Students will be dismissed from school at 12pm. If there should be any changes to your child’s dismissal or after school plan, please communicate with your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

    Spirit Night @ Raising Canes

On February 5th, from 5-9pm, swing by Raising Canes for dinner and support Rowe Lane. Simply mention you are there for spirit night and a percentage of your purchase will be donated back to our school.

    Front Office Notices

We could use assistance with an important issue. Our attendance rate has declined and it is causing two problems:  First, some of our students are in class less often and missing out on instruction.  Secondly, our district (PfISD, not Rowe Lane) is funded largely based on our daily attendance.  When students are absent, the district’s funding decreases and fewer dollars are available for educational programs.

The way you can help is this:  Please make sure your child is in school as frequently as possible.  Additionally, it truly helps if students’ dentist/doctor appointments are scheduled later in the day.  PfISD’s official attendance is taken each day between 9:00 a.m. and 10:a.m.  Scheduling appointments later in the day and vacations or family trips during district holidays would make a significantly positive impact for Pflugerville.

    Rocket Families,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with family – and by now you should be receiving confirmation that the weekend will continue through tomorrow, as all classes and after school activities are canceled for Tuesday. While the question of the day centers on what the weather will bring this evening, I hope each of our Rockets also understands we devote today to the observation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth and impact on our society. Few figures can inspire teachers and educators in quite the same way as Dr. King, and I am grateful each year at this time to be reminded of what a privilege it is to work in pursuit of his vision.

A shout out to Mrs. McGarry for organizing and advertising our Lost and Found items. Photos are found at the Facebook Rowe Lane Rockets Families page. Due to the response online, we will hold on to the coats at least until our next school day this week so that our kids have every chance to be reunited with their winter wear.

Read on for more in store in the coming weeks, and stay safe and warm in the meantime.

Corporate Matching to Close the Year?

Have you made your tax-deductible gift to the Painless Fundraiser this year? Did you know that many local employers offer matching of donations made by employees, and may even make a financial contribution to organizations where employees volunteer? Check out this link to learn how your generous support of our school can become matched or leveraged in big ways!

It’s time again for the Holiday Shop at Rowe Lane. Our PTO creates this opportunity for our students each year, and as a parent, I admit I look forward to seeing what treasures my kids select for me on a very modest budget. This activity probably is at least equal part service to our school as it is a fundraiser, and it takes a LOT of energy to help our youngest shoppers pick out gifts while managing their money. We really could use some more parent volunteers this week. Yes, you will sweat, but you’ll also likely be smiling the entire time, and in some great company. Please take a look at the sign-up genius to see if you could help out.

A special shout out to one of our business partners, Zaxby’s, who not only provided dinner to the Rowe Lane staff at a generously discounted price, but also sent a check for over $550 from last week’s Spirit Night! Thank you to everyone who came out despite the rain and helped make the evening a success.

We have a number of activities over the next 8 ½ days. One way or the other, I hope to see each of you at some point at Rowe Lane before the break.

    Rocket Families,

Thank you for the generosity that was shown this past week closing out our Coats For Kids drive and kicking off our Painless Fundraiser. We collected over 260 coats which will be distributed to children in need just in time for the chilly weather. Congratulations to our 2nd graders who won the grade level competition for most coats collected and the privilege of extra recess for the kids and jeans all week for the teachers.

A special shout out to Casey Holland for setting up our Giving Tuesday campaign on Facebook and monitoring it throughout the day. We brought in over $1,250 in a few short hours! Come out to the PTO meeting this Tuesday to help us determine how we will support our students and benefit our school.

    Rocket Families,

Welcome back! This week’s message focuses on the spirit of giving in several forms. First, the Coats for Kids Drive technically runs through this Wednesday, November 29, and we will accept new or gently used coats up until then. You may contribute to the effort by dropping off your items in our foyer, by going by a Jack Brown Cleaners, or by making a monetary donation online.

Second, we are about to launch our annual Painless Fundraiser for the school year. Rather than participating in traditional fundraisers to help our school provide an exceptional experience for our Rowe Lane Rockets, we organize a donation drive to ensure 100% of money donated reaches the school. This year our hope is to leverage your generosity with the charity of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, who is matching donations to non-profit organizations. Watch https://www.facebook.com/rlespto/ for updates on this opportunity, or, sign up for our new Remind notifications, and remember your contributions are tax deductible as well.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this week. Read on for more details.

Check it out during Arrival this week!
