We had an awesome week, and the 4th and 5th grade students had a successful first round of STAAR administration.  Thank you for your support!   We have many exciting events happening within the next two weeks.  Although the flu is on the downhill run, there are still many viruses that are impacting students and staff.  Please keep your students home until they are free from fever for 24 hours to reduce the spread of these viruses.  Please bring a parent or Dr. note to excuse the absence.  We are encouraging students to attend school to impact attendance in a positive way but don’t want to risk illness spreading.

    Book Fair Preview:

Book Fair is setting up today for the preview, and will be open for purchase Mon-Fri next week!

    Academic Night April 26th 5-6:30:

Get ready for a night of food, fun, and learning!  Academic Night will start with free pizza for all, and then exploration of the amazing activities our WES staff will have prepared for you and the students.  This is a come and go event, and we hope to see you there!  The book fair will be open to families for last minute purchases.

    RECAP:

    Awards & Spring Carnival:

Thank you to the PTO, teachers and volunteers for making the Spring Carnival a HUGE success.  The PTO will be reporting the funds raised at the next meeting.  Thank you to parents for attending the 3rd-9 weeks award’s assembly.  Thank you to the team for stepping in to honor the students, as I was down with a nasty upper respiratory virus and wasn’t able to attend.

WEDNESDAYS AT WES WE ARE COLLEGE & CAREER BOUND:

Each Wednesday students and staff are encouraged to wear a t-shirt that represents their favorite college, university, or higher education of choice.  Our staff work hard to support all students’ participation by reaching out to local universities and scouring thrift shops for t-shirts.  If you can donate, or find a t-shirt for your student, we can all support this initiative to dream BIG!

    DISMISSAL:

Thank you for honoring our campus safety initiative and bringing your parent pick-up dismissal cards daily.  We are happy to provide you with as many cards as you need.  If you forget your card, you will be asked to present your id in the main office.  If your child’s teacher is present and knows you, they can release your child to you without a card one time as a courtesy, but we request that you bring your card subsequent times.  You can give a set of cards to others that regularly pick up  your children, or use in two different vehicles so you won’t have to remember the cards daily.

ASCEND will be dismissed @ 2:35 daily.

    3rd & 5th grade will be dismissed @ 2:40 daily, and 4th will be released at 2:45.

We will be stationed at dismissal with students until 3:00.  Any student that has not been picked up by 3:00 will be brought inside until parents arrived and sign out the student.

We are enforcing that all parents that walk up either stand near the stop sign on the corner of the sidewalk or near the picnic tables and wait for their students.

Jump Rope for Heart tomorrow (Friday)

WES & WPS will be getting together during Special Areas time to finish up Jump rope for Heart.  If the weather is nice, the students will be meeting in between our two campuses.  You are welcome to join your children during their special areas time.  Please sign into the front office of your child’s school before meeting up with them to jump rope.  Any money raised for the Jump Rope for Heart is due tomorrow.

    Safety Drill tomorrow (Friday)

This notice also went home in student folders today.  We had a regularly scheduled fire drill tomorrow, and have added a lockdown.

We conduct a variety of drills including Shelter in Place (bad weather), Fire, Lockout (a threat outside of the building), and Lockdown (threat inside of the building).  We do not typically notify you when we conduct our monthly drills, however, in light of recent events and with emotions running high, I wanted to notify you that we WILL be conducting a lockdown drill tomorrow, Friday, February 23rd.  We will also be pulling the fire alarm during the lockdown to practice the need for students to stay in lockdown even with this distraction.  We have notified the students about this drill, and have also let them know about the fire alarm in conjunction with the lockdown.  We do not want to scare the students, yet prepare them.  If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call.  512-594-4800

    Principal’s Coffee 7:40-8:30 tomorrow (Friday)

Don’t forget to join us tomorrow, Friday February 23rd for the Principal’s Coffee.

    Upcoming Events

February 5th-9th is Counselor Appreciation Week:

Mrs. Hoke, the WES Counselor, does SO much to ensure the students are succeeding in every possible way.  She is supportive to not only the students, but the parents and staff as well.  Please take a second to honor her this week with a kind word of encouragement, an email, Alileah.Hoke@pfisd.net,  or dropping by a small treat to show your appreciation for her willingness to be the best doing the tough work of school counseling!

FEBRUARY 19th IS NOW A REGULAR SCHOOL DAY:

Due to the bad weather day, we will be making up the day on February 19th.  Please ensure your child is here this day.

Join us for an AMAZING night of fun for BINGO at WES THIS FRIDAY from 6-7.  Pizza orders are due by Wednesday.  The pizza pre-order forms went home last Tuesday, and will go home again in this Tuesday’s folders.  Bingo is free, and there are donated prizes that you can win!  There are sodas and snacks that can also be purchased at the event.  We hope to see you there!

    RECAP:

    ELEMENTARY FINE ARTS SHOWCASE:

It was such a joy to see the talented Honor’s Choir and the amazing artwork of our WES students displayed at PHS.  Thank you to Ms. Niswander (Music Teacher) and Ms. Bates (Art Teacher) for always going above and beyond to ensure our students have the most valuable fine arts experiences.

    EARLY RELEASE:

Thank you for being on time and supporting the staff PD day on Wednesday.  Our teachers worked with some new Math strategies to teach the students, planned with grade level teams, and 5th grade was able to collaborate with middle school.
