    WES Families,

We hope you and your family had a relaxing and enjoyable three-day weekend. We are happy to have our students back today, and look forward to the week ahead.

We conducted a severe weather drill first thing this morning, and the students and staff did a wonderful job practicing seeking shelter in our interior classrooms. We like to be prepared for spring weather, and have to annually conduct these drills.

    Yo-Yo’s for Sale:

NED, motivational speaker, was on campus last week to present to our students. Thank you to Ms. Hoke, our amazing counselor, for setting up this SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lesson for our students and staff. The presentation was uplifting and positive for our students. The presenter did some amazing Yo-Yo tricks, and we have Yo-Yo’s and some accessories for sale to the students if you are interested. The presentation was free, and these sales are how NED funds their speaking engagements.

    Principal Coffee:

Please join me for coffee and classroom walks this Friday, April 21, from 7:45-9 a.m. We will visit classrooms, and you will see first-hand the amazing learning taking place in your child’s classroom.

A fabulous night of learning and fun is coming soon! Please join us for the Annual WES Academic Night, Thursday, April 27, from 5:30-7 p.m. We will be serving pizza for free! Bring your family, grab some pizza, and explore and learn with us for the evening!

    Parents,

    Happy Monday!

Please join me for our first Principal Coffee this Friday, March 3, from 7:45-8:30 in the cafeteria (see attached). You are also welcome to join us in the gym at 7:30 for our morning Convocation. I promise it will start your day with a smile!

Our Lost and Found items are overflowing, and we will be donating any unclaimed articles this weekend. We have displayed the items in the hallways for two weeks, and we are still left with this overflow of jackets.

Please encourage your child to search, or feel free to stop by at arrival or dismissal to take a look. Also, we encourage parents to write their child’s name in all jackets, coats and sweaters, to ensure we can easily reunite items to their owner if misplaced.

    Thanks!

    Parents,

The February newsletter was sent home with your student, yesterday, in their Tuesday folders.  Here is a copy for easy access.

See the newsletter for the details of these events:  PTO has an exciting Valentine’s craft night coming up, and we are celebrating Friendship Week with daily themes.  Each class will be having a Valentine’s Day Party in their classroom on the 14th. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you would like to be a part of this fun event with their class. We value your support, and want you to cherish these final years in elementary school. PTO also sent home a flyer today about a Valentine’s fundraiser.

We are conducting our final round of the Mock STAAR tests next week (Feb 6-8).  We have used the mock STAAR tests (released 2016 STAAR tests) to gather valuable data on the TEKS students have not yet mastered. Teachers are able to respond to the individual needs of the students based on this data.

The mock assessments also allow teachers the opportunity to provide feedback to students on stamina, pacing, bubbling (new to third grade sts), processing text and showing their work. Teachers will set individual goals with students, allowing everyone an opportunity to measure their own growth.

We believe progress is valuable, and should be acknowledged and celebrated. The STAAR test is one measure of student mastery of the grade level TEKS.

We encourage parents to refrain from coming to have lunch with your child on Monday through Wednesday next week, as we have changed lunch schedules due to testing. Because we are a third- to fifth-grade campus and all students on campus are involved in testing, scheduling lunches during testing poses some significant challenges and schedules are subject to change last-minute based on space and testing parameters.

If you have a distant family member in town, or special occasion you would like to celebrate with your child during lunch, we are happy to accommodate. Please call the front office to find out your child’s specific lunch time in the event you have a special circumstance and would like to have lunch with your child. Front office: 512-594-4800

Upcoming mock tests and schedule changes

Monday, Feb. 6: Third and fourth grade math mock (All third, fourth and fifth grade lunches will change)

Tuesday, Feb. 7: Third and fourth grade reading mock (All third, fourth and fifth grade lunches will change)

Wednesday, Feb. 8: Fifth grade science mock (only fifth grade lunches will change)

We hope you have a great end of the week and look forward to seeing you at WES for all of our February fun!

    Thanks!
