    Hello Spring Hill Families,

Wow!  It has been a fast and fun week at Spring Hill.  We welcomed 594 students to our campus for the new school year.  As we all know, we had a delayed start on Monday that caused changes in our plans and your plans for the day.  Spring Hill families and teachers were flexible and made this week run smoothly.

We have made some changes for safety and efficiency.  As I shared we have almost 600 students to get in the building, feed, and dismiss safely every day.  We are always putting students first in our decisions.  Change is not always easy, but necessary for improvement.  There is lots of supervision of your children and clear procedures to keep them safe at arrival and dismissal.

You can help us with the changes by being flexible and letting us know how it is working.  We are still tweaking things and the kids are still learning the new procedures.  While we realize these changes may not be most comfortable for all parents, our priority, and I know your priority is the safety of students and you.

We have learned that research shows the students with a growth mindset have higher achievement than those who have a fixed mindset.  This year one of our goals is to promote a growth mindset in our learners.  As a campus we are learning more about what a growth mindset is, and how we can promote it.  Here is a link for you to learn a little about what a growth mindset is.  We would like you to join us in building a growth mindset with your child.  I’ll share more information through the school year.  https://t.co/xyp06hVfof

My door is always open to your feedback and suggestions.  We are just getting started with this amazing year.

“Life doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a Mother.” Happy Mother’s Day to those super important people in our lives who love us unconditionally and grow us into the great people we turn out to be! I hope that every Mom in our Spring Hill Family feels celebrated today for the important roåle they play in their children’s lives.

STAAR testing is complete and we are closing in on the last two weeks of school! Our list of fun events gives testament to how we intend to celebrate another successful year at Spring Hill Elementary and we want everyone to feel welcome to be a part of them all. Our next big Yahoo is the Multicultural Fair this Friday evening. This is always a blowout so make plans to be at SHES this Friday! Hope to see you there.

    Principal

Be A Part of the Multicultural Magic!

One of the awesome qualities of the SHES Family is its student diversity. We have so many cultures represented at Spring Hill and there is a very special night coming up on Friday, May 19 to celebrate ourselves. Make plans to come join us for this event and bring the family. There will be plenty of things for everyone to do and see!

The 2016 Multicultural Festival is rapidly approaching, and there is still time to get involved! We are such an incredible blend of cultures at Spring Hill, and want you to share yours! Do you have things to show? Special foods to share? We would love for you to be a part of this celebration of all of us! We will provide the table space; and just need your representation of your own culture and a little time from you to talk about it with lots of visitors. This is always a huge event you don’t want to miss, so give us a call at 512 594-5400 and tell us you want to be a part of this so we can get you the details.

    Many Thanks to Our Pfriends!

Many students in PfISD go hungry over the weekend when school meal programs do not operate. Backpack Pfriends is a partnership between local churches and Pflugerville ISD that is designed to provide nutritious foods to economically disadvantaged students within Pflugerville ISD. SHES would like to thank our “Pfriends” at First Baptist Church in Pflugerville for sponsoring our campus in this endeavor, and fighting the war against hunger with love.

    Dress Code Reminder

Just a reminder with that with the warm weather comes the task of dressing comfortably for school. Please check your student’s attire before they leave home each morning. Hemlines for shorts and skirts must extend past fingertips with hands at the sides. Muscle shirts and cutoffs are not considered appropriate for school. Strapless or spaghetti strap tops must be covered, and no undergarments of any kind should be visible while on school grounds. Students will need to correct dress code concerns in the nurse’s office when they do occur.

    Flip That School

We have a huge surprise awaiting our students and families when they come back from the summer break. We have been meeting with contractors who are going to finish a massive number of upgrades (About $3 million worth) to our school, which will include new flooring, carpets, paint, bathroom fixtures, and probably a few other things I forgot to list. This is the final component of the bond package that was passed back in 2014 and we can’t wait to see how great Shark-land is going to look when they’re all finished up!

Student Attendance is a Big Deal!

Researchers and educators agree that student attendance is one significant indicator of a child’s success in school. We encourage parents and guardians to be thoughtful of this when scheduling vacations, appointments, and other events that may require a student to miss all or part of a school day.

    Please Watch Your Speed

Each day we have a full parking lot, both in the morning and the afternoon, as our students are arriving and leaving our school. Please remember to drive carefully through the lot and watch for students and their parents so we can ensure that all students have a safe commute.

The rooms are prepared and all systems are go. Our students are ready to shine while the state looks on. The last round of STAAR testing begins tomorrow and runs through Wednesday for all third- through fifth-grade students and we know they are going to be fantastic! Take a moment to talk to your student and help us recast the meaning of the STAAR as an opportunity for them to show off the strength of their powerful minds. We are all very proud of them and want them to feel confident about handling tasks like this when they come along during their education.

After this last round of STAAR the Spring Hill Campus is going to rock out diversity, physical Pfitness (I couldn’t resist), celebrate our students’ successes, and graduate a great group of Sharks! We hope you get to be a part of every single event coming up because they won’t be the same without you! Have a great week.

    STAAR is Coming (Again!)

Our next round of STAAR testing for third- through fifth-graders will begin on Monday, May 8 and continue through the Wednesday the 10th. As you know, the STAAR test will require a great deal of focus and energy from your students on those days. Please help us to ensure that they have the best testing experience by making sure they get plenty of rest on the nights before this important assessment. Also remember that the campus will be closed to visitors on these three days.

    Feeling appreciated!

On behalf of the SHES Staff I would like to thank the Spring Hill Family for the outpouring of gratitude to our team for the hard work that they do each day growing our students. This week was filled with treats and extras for our teachers and staff because of your support and we are forever grateful.

2017 SHES Field Day is coming this Friday all day during student specials. Mr. Marceron and the Specials team have a fun, active day planned for our students and we would love for you to come out and join us. Call the office (512) 594-5400 to get information on times when your students will participate in this celebration of physical fitness.

Oh man! We are stepping into the last month of the 2016-17 school year. These next four weeks are packed with all kinds of things to celebrate and enjoy. Not only are we going to wrap up STAAR testing for the year, we are also going to be celebrating everything from the value of earning a college education (Education Go Get It Week), to the strength of our diversity as a SHES family (Multicultural Festival), to our students’ achievements, to our graduating class of 2017! This month will be absolutely jumping and I can’t think of a better way to close out the year. Check out the calendar below and start making plans … we have lots of ways for us all to be together in the name of our Spring Hill Sharks!

Don’t forget that this week we will be talking with students about pursuing the goal of earning a college degree and how to achieve it! As many of you know, a lot goes into planning and surviving a college education. Let’s help our students to begin thinking about it now so they will be ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

This Week Is Teacher Appreciation Week all week long! Each year, the nation sets aside a week to celebrate the awesomeness of our teachers in PfISD, but especially the ones who teach at SHES. Our fantastic PTO has contacted me with a menu of loving things they plan to do for our teachers this week, and Spring Hill teachers deserve all of it. Thank you to our SHES families who donated gifts of money to help make Teacher Appreciation Week a big deal! Please take a moment this week to send an email, leave a voicemail, or visit in person and let our teachers know just how much they are appreciated.

Let me offer a big thanks to the members of our Spring Hill family, and to our SHES PTO, for braving the chilly temperatures on Saturday (which, incidentally, was very odd for late April) to enjoy some togetherness at the Spring-Fest! When you see Mrs. Perez, let her know just what an awesome job she has been doing with the Shark Choir Club, who performed like champs at the festival.

We are steadily building up for the last round of STAAR testing in two weeks. Keep ‘em read, fed and well rested and SHES will take care of the rest. Have a great week!

What began as a building full of strangers several years ago became a building full of family to me. As some may have already become aware, I have accepted a position outside of Texas and will be turning this campus over to the capable hands of Mrs. Camille Ramirez-Longoria at the end of the 2016-17 school year. While I am not yet prepared to begin saying good-bye to so many friends, I’ve spent the last four years giving thanks for the opportunity to be a part of something as special as Spring Hill Elementary.

Please help us to ensure that our students finish strong this last six weeks by including time for reading in their evening routines each night. We look forward to seeing all of you at this week’s events, so mark your calendars!

We would like to thank all our families who came out for the SHES PTO Family Movie Night on Friday. Things are just better when the family comes together, and we look forward to the next adventure, which I believe is the Spring Festival coming up on the 22nd. In the meantime, we want everyone to feel welcome to come join your student for lunch and take advantage of some of this nice weather (excluding Monday and Tuesday which are supposed to be rain-soaked).

Enjoy the short week, and be sure to include reading time each night this week for kids to grow. See you soon!

    No School on Friday

All schools in PfISD will be closed on Friday, April 14 for the Easter holiday. Enjoy the break!

We have been meeting with contractors who are going to finish a massive number of upgrades (about $3 million worth) to our school, which will include new flooring, carpets, paint, bathroom fixtures and probably a few other things I forgot to list.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a place parents good go to check their student’s progress, attendance and other data anytime they wanted? If you answered “Yes!” then come by the front office to receive your parent login and password that will allow you to get on Focus and see all of these things about your students and more! Please contact our registrar, Maribel Ayala, if you need support with getting logged in or using Focus.

I just noticed on the calendar that we are down to only eight weeks of school remaining for the 2016-17 academic year. I am still having trouble believing that the end of the year is that close. It must be all the hard work and fun everyone is deep into at SHES. I am glad to report that we had an absolute flawless first round of STAAR testing this week and I want to thank our parents and families for making this possible. We still have one more round in early May, so expect some heavy lifting from our teachers and students between now and then to get us completely prepared for this.

As for small blessings, it looks like SHES dodged April Fools Day this year and got some rain over the weekend to help things stay green and beautiful. I can’t wait to see the bluebonnets in full bloom. I also cannot wait to see each one of you over the next few weeks here at SHES. Come join us for lunch and be the highlight of your student’s day at school for an afternoon. We will see you soon!

    SHES Movie Night this Friday

This Friday evening the SHES PTO will be hosting a Family Movie Night beginning at 6 p.m. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. so you can get a great seat and hit the concession stand before the feature film begins. Can’t wait to see you there!

We want to share our thanks to the parents and family that came out for the POPS/STAAR Rally on Friday afternoon. It was a lot of fun seeing the kids get so pumped up and thinking positive about the STAAR Test. I also want to extend a special thanks to our staff who went out of their way to make STAAR as fun as the law allows. It really feels good to see all of our moving parts working so well at Spring Hill Elementary!

Don’t forget that the campus will be closed to visitors on Tuesday and Wednesday because of testing. Take some time to read with your student each night and have a wonderful week!

    STAAR Testing This Week

Our awesome fourth- and fifth-grade students will be taking on their first round of STAAR testing this Tuesday and Wednesday (3/28 and 3/29). As a result, the campus will be closed to visitors on those two days. If your student is scheduled for testing this week, please be sure they are rested and ready for this big challenge!
