    Gala invite

    Gala Silent Auction Gift Basket Contest

     
    During our annual gala, we hold a silent auction to help raise additional funds to give to our District. Get together with your campus or teams, determine a theme, and fill your basket. All baskets are due to PEF by January 24, 2020.
     
    The school or department whose basket raises the most money at the Gala will win a grant! Three lucky winners will walk away with:
     
    1st Place: $500
    2nd Place: $300
    3rd Place: $100
     
     

     

    Employee Years of Service

    Pflugerville ISD will host its Annual Years of Service Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 13 at the Courtyard Marriott Pflugerville. All employees who have 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 35 years of service to PfISD at the end of the current year will receive an invitation in January. If any staff member has a question about their years of service, the employee should to email their questions to Human.Resources@pfisd.net and reference the Years of Service list.

    PEF awards Mini-Grants!

    Congratulations to Wieland Elementary, Mott Elementary, Pflugerville Elementary and Hendrickson High School on winning mini-grants given out by the Pflugerville Education Foundation. The “SurPrize Patrol” made up of PEF Board Members visited each campus to surprise the winners in November. You could be a winner too! The deadline for mini-grants is the last day of each month (weekends included). Grants range between $100 and $500. Apply here

     


     

    PfISD Shirt District T-shirts for Sale

    Pflugerville ISD is selling "We are Family" shirts to the community. If you would like to purchase a district t-shirt, please stop by the PfISD Administration Building (1401 W. Pecan St.) reception area during office hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Shirts are $5 each, cash only.

    Currently, we only have medium, large (limited supply) and extra-large sizes available. Shirts will be sold until the supply runs out. There are no plans to order more shirts. Thank you for supporting PfISD.

     


     

    Discount Childcare for District Staff

    Pflugerville ISD, in partnership with YMCA of Greater Williamson County, on Oct. 28 will open its Northwest Elementary Child Development Center, offering discounted childcare for full-time district staff members. There is limited availability in the pilot program, with admission provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Childcare, from ages 8 weeks to 3 1/2 years, will be provided from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at Northwest Elementary School, 14014 Thermal Drive, Austin. Discounted rates are listed below. Rates include breakfast, lunch and snack. 

    Payments will be deducted from the employee’s paycheck on the 27th of each month beginning Nov. 27, 2019 through June 27, 2020. Proration will occur based on the student's start date.

    To apply, download and complete the YMCA Childcare application and return it to your campus front office.

    Social Media Help us share the great stories on Social Media!

    We’re excited to let you know about a new and easier way for you to submit photos and videos to the Community Relations Staff to use on social media.

    A new email account has been established to help streamline the process of submitting content. If you have photos, videos or other content ideas you think deserve to be on your campus or the district’s social media accounts, you can now email them to SocialMedia@pfisd.net

    This will help us collect more content from teachers, administrators and staff members in the trenches doing the great work to make this district so successful.

    How do I submit content?

    Email your photos or videos to SocialMedia@pfisd.net and include a short description of what is happening (who, what, when, where, why) and you MUST include the names of students who appear in the photos/videos. ** This is important so the Community Relations staff can check parental permissions before posting the content.** 

    We prefer that you send in no more than 4 photos at a time.

    Don’t know what to submit? Here are a few ideas:

    • Students interacting/working together for a learning activity
    • Students having fun learning (kids smiling is the best content of all!)
    • Students helping each other
    • Students being helpful in the classroom
    • Teachers being supportive

    Board Bytes

    The Board of Trustees took action on a variety of items at the November regular meeting. Among other items, they approved Webber Commercial as the general contractor for the district's new middle school and elementary school to be located on the Weiss property, the 2020-2021 Academic Calendar and HVAC replacements at various campuses.

    Veterans Day

    PfISD Veterans to be honored Nov. 8

    PfISD employees who served in the military will be honored on November 8 at The Pfield. All District Veterans will gain access to the football game on Nov. 8 and will also receive an extra ticket for a guest. Additionally, all District Veterans are invited to join us in the Team Store prior to the game for some refreshments. Please send an email to Suzi Meyer to RSVP for the game and reception before the game.

    15 days left!! Employees will self-enroll online. You may log on to enroll through November 9, 2019. If you would like to review the plans prior to enrollment please view the Enrollment Guide for your options. You may enter the site as many times as you wish and make changes through November 9, 2019. You will not be able to make any changes to your plans after this date unless you have a qualifying life event.

    HOW TO SELF-ENROLL 

    The online enrollment system you will use is TBX. If you have login or password issues, please contact the PfISD Benefits Department at 512-594-0026 or benefits@pfisd.net. If you are waiving medical coverage you must still log on and decline coverage.

    To enroll, simply follow these steps:

    • Log in to www.tbx.benselect.com 
    • Click here to review “TBX How to Enroll Guide"
    • Under User ID, enter your employee ID with three zeros before the number – example 000801001 or Social Security Number with no dashes. Do not use an e in front of your ID number.
    • Under Personal ID Number (PIN), enter the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number and the last 2 digits of your birth year.
    • Follow the steps displayed on the site and click “Next” to move on to the next section.
    • Once you have completed all your elections on your benefits, you will be taken to a “Review/Sign Forms” screen. Click “Sign Form” after you have reviewed all of the forms to confirm your elections.

    When enrolling, for clarification, “Lifetime Benefits Term” is permanent life insurance with Chubb Insurance. This is taking the place of Texas Life Insurance.  “Voluntary Employee Life” is the term life plan taking the place of Lincoln Financial.

    We are very excited this year to launch our first Superintendent Support Council! This group will serve as representatives for their campus with district leadership. Members will bring forward any questions or concerns from their campus directly to the Superintendent and the Executive Cabinet, and take answers and explanations back to their campuses every other month.     Employee Giving Campaign begins

    Coming in November, each PFISD staff member will have the chance to participate in this year’s employee giving campaign. Watch for information coming to your home address, posters in schools, and fun rallies tentatively scheduled for the week of November 4-8. PEF has some cool new incentives this year and a special giving level, the Luminary Leadership Giving Society.

    Thanks to the generosity of our PFISD family that contributed to the annual Employee Giving Campaign last school year, nearly $40,000 was raised to help support innovative projects that enhance the success of our students. One of the great incentives for participating in the campaign is that for each dollar pledged, half goes directly back to your campus. Your campus decides how to spend it! PEF calls it the Half-Back Program.

    On October 22, PEF handed out Half-Back checks to principals and departments. Thank you to all who participated and congratulations on your success!

    PEF launches Campus Champions Program

    PEF is launching a new Campus Champions Program. Each campus will have their very own PEF Board Campus Champion who will partner with the campus to share information about upcoming grants and programs. Campus Champions are excited to support your school in ways that are meaningful to your campus and to help support the success of principals, teachers, school staff and students! Starting in November, Campus Champions will be reaching out to Principals and Assistant Principals to say hello.

     


     

    Help develop District Early Childhood, CCMR Plans

    House Bill 3 (HB 3) amends Texas Education Code (TEC) to add Sec. 11.185 and 11.186 to include plans that target early childhood (EC) literacy and math proficiency and college, career, and military readiness (CCMR).  School Boards are now required to adopt plans in early childhood literacy and math, as well as college, career, and military readiness. All plans are required to include:

    • annual goals for aggregate student growth on 3rd grade math and reading STAAR;
    • annual targets for students in each group evaluated under closing the gaps domain;
    • targeted professional development for classroom teachers in kindergarten through 3rd grade for campuses that the board identifies as not meeting the plan’s goals and that considers the unique needs of students in bilingual education or special language programs.
    • annual targets that may be set for students in bilingual or ESL programs.

    College, career, and military readiness plans are required to include:

    • annual goals for aggregate student growth on CCMR readiness indicators evaluated under the student achievement domain; and
    • annual targets for students in each group evaluated under closing the gaps domain.

    Pfestival of Bands, Oct. 7 

    The PfISD Fine Arts department is hosting its 16th Annual Pfestival of Bands program at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at The Pfield, 1440 W. Pecan St. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

    Connally, Hendrickson, Pflugerville and Weiss High School bands will showcase their half-time performances. Cele, Dessau, Kelly Lane, Park Crest, Pflugerville and Westview Middle School bands will perform show tunes in the stands. 

    The community is invited to come show their support for Pflugerville ISD bands. Admission is $5 and gold passes will be accepted. Programs will also be available for purchase for $5. Presale tickets are available here.

     

    Join the Effective Framework Design team!

    Campus Administrators responded to the district’s request to help prioritize district commitments associated with the Effective School Framework. The ESF is a clear vision for what districts and schools across the state do to ensure an excellent education for all Texas students. This year, the A-Team identified Lever 5 as the area with growth opportunities. Lever 5 states that all students have rigorous learning experiences because the school ensures objective-driven daily lessons, classroom routines, and formative assessments that yield the data necessary for teachers to reflect, adjust, and deliver instruction that meets the needs of each student. We are focusing on strengthening the district’s commitments associated with Lever 5 to ensure that campuses are setup for success.

    The District commitments that received the most votes from campus leaders (in order) are:

    1. The district ensures access to high-quality common formative assessment resources aligned to state standards for all tested areas and PK-2nd grade math and reading
    2. The district has effective systems for identifying and supporting struggling learners
    3. For assessments that are district provided and graded, the district ensures that schools receive detailed reports within two instructional days

    We are thankful for our campus leadership’s feedback and for their help in focusing our work. We are committed to providing effective district systems around these ESF commitments and would like your help in this process. If you are interested in being a part of the Lever 5 Design team, please complete this interest form on or before Oct 11. This committee will meet 2-3 times after-school and focus on the system design, implementation, and improvement of the commitments list above. Thank you for volunteering to help us improve these commitments.

     

    American Legion Veterans Scholarship for Professional Development

    In recognition of Veteran’s Day, the American Legion Post 154 of Pflugerville has provided a $600 donation to the Pflugerville Education Foundation to provide a scholarship to PfISD employees honorably discharged from military service or currently serving as a member of the Guard or Reserve.

    The award will be given by the Pflugerville Education Foundation during the pre-game Veterans Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8 at The Pfield.

    The scholarship can be used for any educational activity, including but not limited to working towards a degree, license, certification, or professional development needed to maintain professional status. Candidates must be PfISD employees (contractors and substitutes are not eligible).

    Fall AVID Academy

    Teachers who are interested in becoming AVID trained are invited to attend the Fall AVID Academy. Teachers will attend four 2-hour sessions and will receive 6 hours of GT credit, continuous education hours and summer institute training equivalency.     Pflugerville Education Foundation offers staff Mini Grants!

    The Pflugerville Education Foundation, your Education Pfoundation for student success, announces its 2019-2020 Mini-grant schedule and streamlined application process. The Pfoundation will be offering $12,000 in Mini-Grants ranging from $100-$500 per grant during the 2019-2020 school year. A minimum of 4 grants each month between October 2019 and March 2020 will be awarded. The deadline for submission is the last day of each month (including weekends) for the following month’s awards. The next deadline is October 31, 2019. Notification will be made on the third Thursday of each month following a deadline.     The purpose of mini-grants is to enhance classroom instruction in areas not routinely allocated in regular budgetary funds or not eligible for reimbursement from other sources. One example of a funded project last year was Adapting for Art submitted by Parmer Lane Elementary. The Art Teacher wrote, “Many students are successful in my classroom that struggle in academic subject areas because they are able to express themselves without using words which can be a huge hurdle for some of our highest needs students. I want to do my best to meet their diverse needs, but often struggle because I don’t have the materials needed to adapt their lessons. I would like to create an adaptive art toolkit that would include adaptive supplies, creature comforts and essential tools for the students and adults who work with them.”

    FAFSA Window Opens Oct. 1

    For many, Oct. 1 signifies the fall – leaves turning orange and gold, and maybe pumpkin spice in their coffee. But for Pflugerville ISD high school seniors and their parents, Oct. 1 marks a significant step in the college application process.
     
    The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) window opens Oct. 1, which will send high school students throughout the United States vying for limited grant, loan and work-study funds for next year’s fall semester.
     
    To assist PfISD students in making the next jump in their lifetime journey, the district will host a series of FAFSA application completion events each Saturday in October. PfISD will also support students in getting their FAFSA and Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) paperwork done, and submitted to postsecondary institutions of their choice through the ApplyTexas portal.
     
    “Pflugerville ISD is committed to preparing all students for the transition from high school to multiple pathways after graduation – both career and college,” said PfISD Special Programs Executive Director Cara Schwartz.
     
    Filing for FAFSA is free, and FAFSA.gov provides a list of documents necessary to the process. Students may list up to 10 schools they are interested in attending, even if they have not yet applied or been accepted to the institutions.
     
    “Research indicates two-thirds of almost all living wage jobs will require a postsecondary credential,” said Schwartz. “However, training for credentials can be expensive.”
     
    The U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid provides more than $120 billion in grants (including Pell Grants), loans and work-study funds each year to help pay for college or career school. Most students are eligible to receive financial aid from the federal government. Age, race, or field of study will not affect eligibility. 
     
    An often overlooked aspect of the application process is that many colleges, state agencies, and scholarship foundations require FAFSA in order to award scholarships and grants to middle- and upper-middle-class students attending expensive schools. Some private colleges, for example, award need-based aid to some students from families earning more than $200,000 a year.
     
    “The overwhelming message from the college side is that there are scholarships that don’t look at financial need, but do require FAFSA/TASFA information,” said Hendrickson College and Career Counselor Leigh Ann Spradlin.
     
    FAFSA is a prerequisite for Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Grad PLUS Loans and Parent PLUS loans. These loans are available without regard to demonstrated financial need.

    The Pflugerville ISD instructional calendar is the result of a framework developed through collaboration between community, staff and district leadership. The framework is intended to balance the needs of all stakeholders, especially our students and teachers.

     

    Discount Childcare for Connally Feeder Pattern Staff

    Pflugerville ISD, in partnership with the YMCA, is now offering discounted childcare for full-time district staff members who are employed at the following campuses: Connally HS, Westview MS, Copperfield ES, Northwest ES, Parmer Lane ES and River Oaks ES. This is a pilot program. There is limited availability and spots will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

    Childcare, from ages 8 weeks to 5 years, will be provided from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at Northwest Elementary School. Discounted rates are listed below. Rates include breakfast, lunch and snack. Payments will be deducted from the employee’s paycheck.

    Board Bytes

    The Board of Trustees took action on a variety of items at the September 26 regular meeting. Among other items, they approved class size waivers due to growth, our annual renewal of Microsoft Licenses, video and physical access security upgrades, as well as the purchase of an additional 125 laptops and 5 charging carts to address student needs across the District.

    Mayor's Healthiest School Awards 

    Fourteen Pflugerville ISD schools were recognized by the Austin Mayor’s Health & Fitness Council during the council’s annual awards ceremony. The district also was honored as one of the healthiest workplaces.
     
    Highland Park Elementary and Parmer Lane Elementary each received Mayor’s Healthiest School Awards and mini-grants to go toward the physical education programs at the schools to help promote healthy and active lifestyles among their students. Murchison Elementary received an honorable mention for healthiest schools.
     
    The District also was honored among the Mayor’s Healthiest Workplaces as a silver level awardee.
     
    In addition to the honors received by Highland Park, Parmer Lane and Murchison, a total of 12 schools earned an MFHC Exemplary Rating for the 2018-19 school year. Those schools were: Caldwell Elementary, Dearing Elementary, Delco Primary (now Elementary), Highland Park Elementary, Mott Elementary, Murchison Elementary, Parmer Lane Elementary, River Oaks Elementary, Rowe Lane Elementary, Wieland Elementary, Cele Middle School and Dessau Middle School.
     
    “Our vision in PfISD is passionately serving the best interests of students and part of that is teaching the whole child,” said PfISD Superintendent Dr. Douglas Killian. “Teaching them the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle now helps set a precedent for them moving forward. I’m proud of the efforts of all our physical education teachers in this district to make a commitment to promoting health and fitness to our students.”
     
    Austin Mayor Steve Adler started the MHFC in 2004 and began the Mayor’s Healthiest Schools and Mayor’s Healthiest Workplaces awards in 2017.
     
    PfISD has been among the leaders all three years of the program with Murchison among the three grant winners for the elementary level each of the first two years. Now this year, Highland Park and Parmer Lane give PfISD two of the three elementary grant winners.
     
    Winning schools receive a $1,000 mini-grant to support their efforts toward health and wellness initiatives on campus and a commemorative banner to display.

     

    HHS Recognized by ESPN, Special Olympics

    During a special video presentation on Friday morning, Hendrickson High School was recognized by the Special Olympics and ESPN as one of the top schools in the nation for inclusion.
     
    ESPN anchor Hannah Storm appeared by video announcing Hendrickson as a recipient of a national banner of honor, awarded to only five schools nationwide. Earlier this week, Hendrickson was named to the 2019 ESPN Honor Roll as part of its Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools National Recognition Program, joining 33 other high schools and universities as finalists for the national banner awards.
     
    “All schools who join the inclusion revolution are on the right track to making our world a more inclusive place, but these national banner presentations are given exclusively to the elite Unified Champion Schools who have met the 10 national standards of inclusions and have been nominated by their state’s Special Olympics program,” Storm said.
     
    PfISD Special Olympics coordinator and coach Amy Wiesenhutter said this is an amazing honor for Hendrickson to receive and one that has been earned after students and staff have created a welcoming atmosphere through years of effort and inclusion.
     
    “I can’t begin to express how proud I am of Hawk nation,” she said. “These students have totally created a climate of acceptance for all through many different activities. The environment of Hendrickson High School has been greatly impacted by the students generating a total unified movement and choosing to include. Congratulations to Hendrickson on this well-deserved national recognition.”
     
    Unified Champion Schools are recognized for their work in creating an inclusive environment on campus for all, turning the focus beyond Special Olympics events and to a whole school movement for inclusion. Through the program teachers, students and staff are encouraged to work together to create supportive classrooms, inclusion schoolwide activities and opportunities for growth and success.
     
    In the video Storm said ESPN and the Special Olympics would be coming to Hendrickson to present the school with its banner. That event is currently scheduled for March.

    A Note from Dr. Killian

    Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I wanted to take a little time to share several of the things going on in the district along with a peek into planning underway. It’s been a fast-moving last 12 months and we have several things to share.

     First, student enrolment trends have been interesting. Last year, we projected that we would grow close to 800 students by the October 2018 Snapshot date. Snapshot is a date every year in October when the Texas Education Agency has us submit student enrollment numbers for the year. Numbers submitted at that time are used for campus and district report card information and year over year show our demographic trends. For UIL, those numbers are used to classify high schools every two years (ie A, AA, AAA, and so forth). After showing growth the year before, growth stalled in 2018-19 and we only grew 109 students. The impact was that we had increased staffing for the new students more than the students that actually showed up. We were able to adjust our budget and address the funding projections though. Demographic projections for this year still showed growth but were slowed by what transpired last year to a more conservative 233 additional students by the October 2019 Snapshot date. Well, surprise, 735 students have shown up already and we experienced increases and decreases in some surprising places. The past several weeks we have approved more and more teacher positions to address this growth along with having to surplus teachers on campuses where enrollment by grade levels didn’t add up.

    Despite what some think, economic considerations were not the main factor in moving staff this year. Funding is fine, the issue is getting a certified teacher to classrooms that only had substitutes or are over-crowded.  With unemployment at sub 4% levels across the state, the job market is very tight for staffing in all sectors. That has lead us to hold people to their contracts in 2019-20 for lateral moves because we can’t find suitable replacements. We want to be able to release staff that have job opportunities they want to explore, but our first duty is to provide certified staff for our kid’s classrooms. An employment contract works to not only protect staff for a year’s employment but also to protect our students.

    Speaking of shortages in staffing, in several areas, HR and staff recommended increases and adjustments to help attract and retain staff. A differential for hourly staff who serve in our special needs units was added for the new year. In addition to the record increases in pay, several stipends were adjusted. Stipends for special education teachers in behavior and Life skills units were added. Several stipends for extracurricular, academic, and co-curricular were increased as we reviewed market data for the region. We also took over funding UIL academic stipends at the district level but left the money that was previously used to pay for these stipends in the campus budgets.

    Additionally, we have aggressively increased bilingual teacher stipends to the highest in central Texas at $6,500 because that area of certification is a major shortage area for the state. The Human Resources department piloted a hiring pool for bilingual teachers, which was a big success. While we did have 6 Bilingual openings as recently as last week, we identified 6 existing positions that were currently in the district that had a low student to teacher ratios and transferred teachers to classrooms that currently have a substitute or large overcrowding. We don’t like to move teachers at any time, but we needed to get the staffing to the classrooms that needed relief. We are actually fully staffed with certified bilingual teachers in our classrooms!

    Finally, we wanted to share that this year’s raises were just the start. We believe we will be in a good position in the spring to give another solid raise, look at more stipends, investigate additional ways to reward staff and look at leading the market in more areas.     District Updates Local Leave Policy

    The local leave policy DEC (LOCAL) was updated for the 2019-2020 school year with the following changes:

    Schedule of Limitations (Non-Discretionary Days)
    Unless specifically excused by the campus principal based on the effect of the employees’ absence on the educational program,  District operations, the availability of substitutes or as specified by District Regulations, medical certification shall be required for absences of all campus employees occurring under the following circumstances:”

    1. On the day before or after a school holiday;
    2. On the first or last day of a semester;
    3. On the days scheduled for end-of-semester or end-of-year exams;
    4. On days scheduled for state-mandated testing;
    5. On professional or staff development days.

    As specified by District regulations allows campus principals to approve 6% of campus total employees’ discretionary leave absence requests. 

    If prior approval is not secured for any of the above absences the employee’s pay will be docked at their daily rate the month after the occurrence. Documentation must be received during the current school year.

    Elimination of 10 Day Rule

    Employees will no longer need to provide documentation for going over 10 days in a year. (Excessive absenteeism guidelines will still apply.)

    Excessive Absenteeism

    • Absences in excess of ten days are considered to be excessive absenteeism.
    • Employees under approved Family and Medical Leave, Temporary Disability Leave, assault leave, jury duty, subpoena, bereavement leave, or an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act are not considered when determining excessive absenteeism. Non-contract leave days (vacation days), are not counted when determining excessive absenteeism.

    Intermittent Family Medical Leave (FML) for care of newborn, adoption or foster placement

    • The District “shall not permit” intermittent FML for the care of newborn, adoption or foster placement.
    • Employees that qualify for FML must take their days in one continuous block of time up to 12 weeks.
    • Employees out for a serious medical condition for themselves or a family member may still take intermittent FML.


    Separation of Local and State Leave

    Local Sick Leave

    • Local sick leave may only be used for an employee or an immediate family member’s illness
    • Employees may not use local sick days for personal reasons

    State Sick Leave

    • Non-Discretionary or Unplanned leave – to be used for sick, bereavement, family emergency)

    State Personal Leave

    • Discretionary or planned leave – personal leave
    • Requires supervisor approval at least one week in advance via the appropriate planned leave approval form (two forms) and must indicate in AESOP notes that approval was obtained.
    • Maximum 3 consecutive workdays

     

    Less than Annual Appraisals

    The PfISD Board of Trustees approved DNA Local in August, which creates a "less than annual appraisal" option for teachers. Please view the attachments to learn more about this new option for our highly-qualified teachers. For those interested in the less than annual appraisal option, please review the eligibility criteria and submit the attached form to your principal no later than September 13th.

    New Employee discount for EDP childcare in 2019-20

    As part of the 2019-20 budgeting process, Pflugerville ISD has implemented a discounted tuition rate for full-time employees. Employes will now pay $50 per child, per month for afterschool care. Previously, employees paid a rate of $140 per child, per month for afterschool care. Contact the EDP Office for registration information.

    My Road My Future Campaign

    A group of students from Pflugerville High School will be recognized by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for their work on a public service announcement contest this spring. The District and PfISD Police partnered with Travis Co. ESD #2 for the My Road My Future campaign to promote safe driving among teens. The group from PHS made a video emphasizing the dangers of texting while driving with an artistic twist and won the contest.

    The TDLR administers the Driver Education and Safety Program, and representatives from the organization contacted the District last week to praise the students for their work and invite them to be honored at this month’s Driver Training and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee meeting on Sept. 25.

    The students who participated in making the winning video were: Jacob Claxton, Michael Hornsby, Mac Bain, Lily Bitner, Alex Vo and Ava Carrasco. Their teacher David Robb and administrators from PHS will join them at the meeting when the students are honored.

    A Note from Dr. Killian

    Just one more week to go in this school year, and while I know you're all going to miss your students, I'm sure you have begun the countdown to a well-deserved Summer break. This marks our last Employee Newsletter for the school year and I hope you have found it helpful and full of pertinent information, as well as a few celebrations of our staff and students. We will continue the newsletter next year starting in August, and we also have a few other ideas in the works to help with employee communication and interaction for the upcoming school year, so stay tuned!

    We know you are all waiting to hear about salary increases for the upcoming school year. We have also been watching the Legislature with bated breath to see what the financial impact will be to our district and staff so we can maximize what we can provide to our staff members. We are committed to recommend at least a 3% raise for all employees, based on our current fiscal situation. Please know that we value ALL of our employees, and we are waiting for the School Finance Bill because we hope to be more aggressive in our pay increase than surrounding districts, for both salary and hourly employees. Once the bill is passed, and we have had the opportunity to provide a recommendation to the Board of Trustees, we will provide additional information to staff. I know many of you will be on Summer break, but please plan on checking your email or the district website in early June for an update on district salaries.

    It has been a great year, and we have had some significant accomplishments, including the passage of a Bond and Tax Ratification Election which will help fund future growth in the district for the next several years. I am excited about where we are, and even more so for where we are going. I thank each of you for your hard work this year on behalf of our students and look forward to seeing you again in August to kick off another great school year!

    Skyward Teacher Training

    PfISD will launch the new Skyward Student Information System for the 2019-2020 school year. All teachers will be required to either attend a training session or complete an online course. Plans are being finalized for training labs prior to the start of school. Teachers electing to complete an online course will still be required to submit their Gradebook setup for verification prior to the start of school.

    Last Day to Resign without Penalty

    The last day for contract employees to resign without penalty is July 2, 2019.  After July 2, resignations will not be accepted until the Superintendent of Schools accepts the resignation.  Educational Associates and other non-contract positions do not have this restriction.

     

    Employee Transfer Deadline

    The last day for employees to apply to be transferred within the district is June 7, 2019.

     

    New Employee discount for EDP childcare in 2019-20

    As part of the 2019-20 budgeting process, Pflugerville ISD has implemented a discounted tuition rate for full-time employees. Employes will now pay $50 per child, per month for afterschool care. Currently, employees pay a rate of $140 per child, per month for afterschool care. EDP will begin registration for the 2019-20 school year in the coming weeks.

     

    2019 Convocation Scheduled

    PfISD has scheduled its annual Convocation to kick off the 2019-20 school year on Thursday, Aug. 8 at Shoreline Church, 15201 Burnet Rd. in Austin. Convocation will run from 2-4 p.m.

    In the May Board Meeting, the Board approved the addition of an Army JROTC program at Connally High School, renovations to the PACE building to accommodate the PfISD Police Department and Nursing Staff, and approval of acoustical treatment at the Rock Gym to better serve as a meeting and professional development site for district functions.

    District hosts Employee Recognition Event

    Pflugerville ISD honored teacher and staff excellence as it hosted the 2019 PfISD Employee Recognition Banquet on Thursday in Pflugerville. 

    The evening was highlighted by the presentation of Teacher, Rookie Teacher, Humanitarian and Support Staff awards. The district also applauded its retirees, including those with more than 40 years in education.

    “This is my favorite event of the year,” said PfISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Douglas Killian. “It’s an honor to recognize the amazing work being done by our incredible teachers and staff.” 

    Pflugerville Elementary math interventionist Susan Kruger was named District Elementary Teacher of the Year, while Melissa Brydson, a math teacher at Park Crest Middle School, captured the District Secondary Teacher of the Year award.

    Each received $600 from the Pflugerville Education Foundation, a laptop from Dell and a ring from Herff Jones.  

    Tito Saquiche of Mott Elementary was named District Elementary Rookie Teacher of the Year, while John Powell of Kelly Lane Middle School was named District Secondary Rookie Teacher of the Year. Saquiche is a first-grade teacher and Powell teaches Texas history. 

    They received $350 cash awards from PEF.  

    Margaret Olivarez of Copperfield Elementary and Sara Lucas of Hendrickson High School were named District Elementary Humanitarian and Secondary Humanitarian of the Year, respectively. Olivarez teaches third grade, while Lucas teaches social studies.

    Olivarez organized a T-shirt campaign that garnered the attention of colleges nationwide and led to an outpouring of free donations from various universities. Lucas for years has helped raise funds for cancer research through the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

    They also received $350 cash awards from PEF. 

    Humanitarians of the Year are defined as staff members who represent the district in positive manners through interactions with parents, students and PfISD employees.

    Administrators and faculty at PfISD schools selected campus Teacher, Rookie Teacher and Humanitarian of the Year award winners, from which a panel of judges selected the district honorees. 

    District Support Staff of the Year award winners in six categories were announced, and 40 retirees were honored for their time in education. Of those, 16 employees retired with at least 30 years of service.

    All honorees received handmade, glazed ceramic pottery. 

    District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Killian and PfISD Board of Trustees Vice-President Larry Bradley provided remarks at the event.

    Gomez Ramback named principal at Ruth Barron Elementary

    Pflugerville Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Killian announced the hiring of Natalia Gómez Ramback as the principal of Ruth Barron Elementary School on Friday.
     
    Gómez Ramback comes to Barron from Georgetown ISD where she has spent 16 years leading, growing and serving the community of GISD in a number of roles. Most recently she has been the principal at Dell Pickett Elementary since 2013.
     
    “I am excited to welcome Natalia Gómez Ramback to Pflugerville,” Killian said. “She brings a wealth of experience from another strong performing school district in our area and will be a great administrator for the next chapter at Ruth Barron Elementary.”
     
    While at Pickett Elementary, Gómez Ramback guided a team of more than 50 employees that collaborated to create a positive and productive learning environment for all students. As a bilingual educator and administrator, she was able to communicate with parents in both English and Spanish for most of the significant announcements and communications sent to parents and guardians.
     
    Gómez Ramback said she is looking forward to her new role and leading another campus with a student-centered culture and a unifying partnership among staff.
     
    “I believe that my passion and strong leadership skills will further the mission of PfISD to provide an inspiring, engaging and relevant educational experience that empowers students to reach their full potential as productive members of a diverse global community,” Gómez Ramback said. “I look forward to serving PfISD students and am enthusiastic about this new opportunity to strengthen Texas public schools.”
     
    Prior to her time as the principal of Pickett Elementary, Gómez Ramback served GISD as an assistant principal at Village Elementary, Frost Elementary and McCoy Elementary. She also taught Pre-K and second-grade bilingual classes at Frost Elementary and served as the campuses bilingual team leader.
     
    Gómez Ramback replaces Virginia Caudle, who is retiring at the end of this school year with 30 years of service in education.

     

    PfISD Students Participate in Page Program at State Capitol 

    As the 86th Texas Legislature session comes to an end next week, 20 students from Pflugerville ISD will look back on their participation in the process as pages in State Sen. Kirk Watson’s office. The senator welcomed budding students to work in his office and provided an experience that taught them about how our government works.
     
    “I really wanted to do this,” said Kiya Theobald, a seventh-grader at Kelly Lane Middle School. “I was really excited and I thought it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to do this. I was kind of nervous because I’d be doing important actions.”
     
    Those important actions included 3-hour shifts in the Texas Senate, where the pages assist as Senate messengers, observe committee hearings or work the Senate floor. 
     
    Kimberly Roark serves PfISD as its elementary social studies coordinator and helped the District find students for this year’s program. She said it is an opportunity for young students to see their government in action and what happens behind the scenes.
     
    “This is a wonderful chance for students to get an authentic lesson in civics by seeing some of the inner workings of our legislative system up close,” Roark said.
     
    Each elementary campus may nominate up to two fourth- or fifth-grade students. Each middle school campus may nominate up to two seventh-grade students. The students represented 10 PfISD schools: Cele Middle, Copperfield Elementary, Dessau Middle, Highland Park Elementary, Kelly Lane Middle, Park Crest Middle, Riojas Elementary, Spring Hill Elementary, Timmerman Elementary and Westview Middle.
     
    Sen. Watson said he looks forward to having students serve in his office each year. Their curiosity and passion for civil service is apparent in each student and he is happy to provide an opportunity for them to explore their interest in politics and government.
     
    “One of my favorite parts of serving in the Texas Senate is hosting students from all around my district to be pages during the legislative session,” Watson said. “I strongly believe that students living in the shadow of our wonderful Capitol ought to have a chance to spend time in it and see our state government up close and in action. So, I try to give this opportunity to as many kids as I can.”
     
    Cele Middle School seventh-grader Ja’Rohn Keyes said he enjoyed the program because it gave him a behind-the-scenes look into how our legislators work to write and pass bills at the Capitol during their session.
     
    “It’s a really fun thing to do. It may be nerve-racking at some times, but it really pays off in the end,” Keyes said. “The most interesting part of it was just being on the Senate floor and seeing all the other bills get passed, seeing all the senators and the talking – that was really the most interesting because of how everyone was talking so politely. It was really different.”
     
    Students were nominated by teachers who felt they would benefit from the program or represent their school well in such an important role in the program.
     
    Keyes’ teacher Michael Kelley said he nominated him for the program because Keyes has shown an interest in state government and would appreciate the rare opportunity to see it in action. Plus, Kelley has seen how the page program has catapulted others into a career in politics.
     
    “Early in my career I worked for three Texas state senators, during which time I met many former Senate pages who were inspired from their page experiences to return to work at the state Capitol,” Kelley said. “I hope Ja’Rohn will be similarly motivated from what he learned as a Senate page in the Watson Page Program to continue to pursue his goal of a public service career.”
     
    Kelly Lane Texas History teacher John Powell said he nominated Theobald because she has shown an interest in learning more about government and her work ethic in his classroom.
     
    “Kiya is a hardworking and conscientious student with a natural curiosity about history and the workings of our government, so she was an ideal candidate for Sen. Watson's page program,” Powell said.
     
    That curiosity paid off for Theobald and other students as she said she now feels more secure about decisions being made by the state legislature, after seeing senators debate bills in person and discuss both sides of the issues.
     
    Keyes echoed her sentiments and called it a valuable learning experience to see his government in action first-hand.
     
    “I never saw that type of stuff happen,” Keyes said. “So, the first time that I saw it was with my own eyes, so that’s like a completely different experience.”
     
    Both Theobald and Keyes said they would recommend participating in the page program to other students if they are given the opportunity. The chance to work in the Capitol and see how bills get passed was a learning experience you don’t get every day.
     
    The students also learned about professional business attire with boys required to wear a coat and tie if they were to be on the Senate floor. Girls could wear a dress, skirt or dress pants with a blouse.
     
    But they also learned comfortable shoes are a must.
     
    “You get a lot of exercise,” Theobald said. “I climbed like 30 floors of stairs and I got to see parts of the Capitol where visitors don’t get to go. It was just really cool.”

    District gets Bond Rating Upgrade, Sells 2018 Bonds 

    Pflugerville ISD recently raised its bond rating to AA+, in time for its initial offering of $250 million in bonds from last year’s successful election.

    Standard and Poors on March 14 raised PfISD’s general obligation debt rating from AA to AA+, citing the district’s strong financial management practices and strong local economy, among other factors for the upgrade.

    “This rating is a testament to our district’s conservative handling of its budget and finances,” said PfISD Chief Operating Officer Ed Ramos. “Our board and administration continue to maintain great stewardship over its tax dollars. This also translates to millions of dollars in interest cost savings over the life of the bonds.” 

    The S&P AA+ rating bond rating places PfISD among a select group of only 20 school districts in Texas with the distinction. 

    The rating upgrade was part of a process that included the initial sale of bonds approved by voters in November 2018. The 2018 bond package, totaling $332 million, is slated to accommodate growth in student enrollment, update aging facilities and address evolving student programs. 

    Ramos on March 25-26 traveled to Dallas for the sale of $250 million in general obligation bonds. The district’s favorable bond rating and high demand for its bonds helped PfISD take advantage of approximately $1 million in interest savings. The district was also able to sell the bonds with no tax rate increase to the community. 

    PfISD has already begun moving forward to meet the growing demands that led to the 2018 bond election, putting bond monies into full planning and architectural designs on the proposed Elementary No. 22 and Middle School No. 7, as well as the full purchase of the district’s new bus fleet – 159 vehicles total.

    Some of the new vehicles have already arrived within the district, Blue Bird Buses each equipped with air-conditioning, heating, security cameras and seatbelts, among other features. The school district has also begun advertising new bus driver and monitor positions, each full-time and starting at $19 an hour, plus benefits. 

    Remaining bonds from the 2018 PfISD election are scheduled to be sold in late 2020. 

     

    Legislative Update

    As Pflugerville ISD works through the budget process for the upcoming school year, we are keeping an eye on the State Legislature and how any approved legislation could impact the district. We are pleased to confirm the district has currently earmarked funds to recommend a 3% raise for all staff members. However, we will wait to propose the salary increases until we have an approved finance bill by both the House and the Senate.
     
    As you are likely aware, the final results of the House and Senate school finance bills could be significant, and could dramatically impact the PfISD budget for the next several years. With this in mind, we will monitor the actions at the capital and keep you updated as the results become more clear. We plan to include the most current updated information in the next edition of the PfMonthly, so be sure to check back!

    Teacher Committee Opportunities

    The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is encouraging highly-qualified Texas educators to apply to participate in TEA's Assessment Educator Committees.

    Texas educators—classroom teachers, higher education representatives, curriculum specialists, administrators, and regional education service center staff play a vital role in the test-development process. The involvement of these education professionals enables the development of high-quality assessments that accurately measure what Texas students have learned in the classroom.

    Thousands of Texas educators have served on one or more of the educator committees that are involved in the development of the Texas assessment program. These committees represent the state geographically, ethnically, by gender, and by type and size of school district. They include educators with knowledge of the needs of a variety of student populations, including students with disabilities and English learners (ELs).

    To apply to participate in these committees, educators should complete the Educator Committee Application Form at https://www.txetests.com/edc/. From the Committee Preference tab at the bottom of the application, select Assessment Educator Committee.

     

    2019 Teacher Institutes: Improving Instruction through Assessment

    TEA is now accepting applications for 2019 Teacher Institutes in mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social studies. The summer institutes provide professional development aimed at building assessment literacy and understanding of the alignment of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) program with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Highly qualified Texas teachers and curriculum experts with current experience in the following grade levels and subjects are encouraged to apply.

    • English language arts and reading for grades 3–8 and English I and II
    • Mathematics for grades 3–8 and Algebra I
    • Science for grades 5 and 8 and Biology
    • Social studies for grade 8 and U.S. History Studies
    • Spanish language arts and reading for grades 3–5

    PEF Offers Mini-Grants to Teachers

    Ninety-four percent of public school teachers say they spend an average of $479 of their own money on classroom supplies or training without reimbursement. PEF has a plan to help through Mini-Grants:

    • Only a 600-word project summary is required
    • $100-$500 per grant
    • Deadline the 28th of each month
    • The last funding of the 2018-2019 year will be available April 27 of the 2018-2019 school year.

    In the April Board Meeting, the district approved $4.6 million for English and Spanish Language Arts and Reading Materials as well as the first technology projects from the 2018 Bond. Areas targeted for upgrades include computers, network capacity, projectors and security and firewall protection. Additionally, the board approved Mike Brassfield as the new Executive Director of Transportation.

    Dell Internship Program 

    Fifteen Pflugerville ISD students are taking part in a unique high school internship program at Dell with the support of the company’s product engineers.

    Qualifying students with computer science, health sciences and engineering backgrounds from Connally, Hendrickson and Pflugerville high schools have begun work at the Dell campus on Parmer Lane in Austin, alongside software developers in the Client Product Group – Software Engineering section.

    “Pflugerville ISD is excited to continue a partnership with Dell that provides PfISD high school seniors an opportunity to participate in an amazing work-based learning experience through a group project based on real Dell work,” said Traci Hendrix PfISD Career and Technical Education director. “Partnerships like this one are vital to the success of career and technical education [CTE] programs and we could not prepare students for life success without wonderful supporters like Dell.”

    PfISD and Dell officials worked together in the initial offering of the internship program last year. Thirteen PfISD students took part, working on a virtual reality project with the support of Dell product engineers.

    In order to participate, students must be at least 18 years old and have a class schedule allowing them to travel to Dell for at least two hours a day, three days a week. This year’s 10-week program began March 4.

    Ruckel named principal at Northwest Elementary

    Pflugerville ISD Superintendent of Schools Doug Killian announced the appointment of Tana Ruckel as the new Principal at Northwest Elementary School on Tuesday. Ruckel will begin her 25th year serving PfISD students with the start of the 2019-2020 school year and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Northwest Elementary.
     
    Ruckel has worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in PfISD at three different campuses before serving the Northwest Elementary community. Most recently, Ruckel has been the principal at Highland Park Elementary for the past seven years.
     
    Killian said he is pleased with Ruckel’s acceptance of the position and the job done by Tere Tidwell as an interim principal this semester while the District searched for a permanent replacement.
     
    “I am deeply appreciative of the great work performed by Tere Tidwell, who stepped up to lead the campus,” Killian said. “Ms. Tidwell's role has been vital in keeping the school moving forward and allowing our teachers and other staff members to continue our primary purpose – educating our students.
     
    “Ms. Ruckel is looking forward to working together with Northwest’s staff to build on the great things already happening at the campus and helping guide them to even more significant achievements.”
     
    Moving forward, Ruckel will split her time between Northwest Elementary and Highland Park Elementary while the district searches for her replacement at HPES. Tidwell will also continue to support the campus until Ruckel is at Northwest full-time.

    PfISD will be moving to a new student and business information system in August 2019. While the Focus system provided enhanced features compared to our previous system, we believe that the new Skyward system will make it even easier for teachers to manage their Gradebooks through a stable environment. 

    The link below will take you to a survey we are conducting that will help us design a series of training options for district staff. We will also be recruiting teachers to help serve as trainers for the new Gradebook.

    We are working to provide training options in both online and face-to-face formats. We would like teachers to inform us of their preference as we know learning is different for everyone and we want to better serve your specific needs.

    Teams advance to Destination Imagination Globals

    Creative Crayons  Two Pflugerville ISD teams have advanced to the Destination Imagination Global Finals tournament, scheduled for May 22-25 in Kansas City, Missouri.

    The multi-campus teams The Other Guys and Creative Crayons advanced to Destination Imagination Globals after competing at the Destination Imagination Texas Affiliate Tournament in Corpus Christi on March 22-23. The pair of teams, as well as the Electric Eagles of Dearing Elementary, moved onto the state tournament after competing at the Capital Region DI Regional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Connally High School.

    Education nonprofit Destination Imagination annually hosts competitions in which school-aged contestants solve team challenges at regional and state/national levels to advance to the global stage. Challenge categories vary, based in science, technology, engineering, arts, math and service learning.  

    Top-tiered teams at state tournaments are invited to compete at Globals. 

    The Creative Crayons advanced in the Escape Artists, Elementary Level service learning category. Team members are from Caldwell Elementary (Gracen Ramirez, Will O’Connor and McKenna O’Connor), Mott Elementary (Frankie O’Shaughnessy) and Timmerman Elementary (Bryce Howard and Helga Mueller). Team managers are Dan and Louise Howard. 

    The Other Guys The Other Guys advanced in the Medical Mystery, Middle Level scientific category. Members are from Kelly Lane Middle (Victor Bendixen), Pflugerville Middle School (Rudolf Bendixen, Kenneth Kalu, Elena Howard, and Emma Edwards), Timmerman Elementary (Bryce Howard) and Windermere Elementary (Jameson Messer). Team managers are Rachelle Bendixen and Louise Howard.

    Destination Imagination is in its 20th year of hosting team challenge competitions. More than 150,000 students across the U.S. and in 30-plus countries annually participate in the DI Challenge Experience program. 

    The Legendary Apple Doom Skullz of Pflugerville Middle School and The Creative Crayons represented PfISD at Destination Imagination Global Finals last year.

    New Clear Bag Policy at The Pfield

    Pflugerville ISD Athletic Director Todd Raymond announced on Tuesday the implementation of a clear bag policy for events at The Pfield beginning in the 2019-20 academic year.
     
    The new clear bag policy is in line with current trends at sporting venues across the nation in an effort to improve the safety and security of those in attendance.
     
    “The safety of our students, parents and fans in attendance at our sporting events is our No. 1 priority at The Pfield,” Raymond said. “This clear bag policy will help us keep everyone in attendance at our football and soccer games safe.”
     
    Approved bags in the policy include clear bags that do not exceed 12 inches in length or height and 6 inches in width. A clear one-gallon plastic resealable plastic storage bag can also be used. A policy of one bag per person will be in place, as well.
     
    Bags must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and have a maximum of one logo imprint not exceeding 4.5 inches tall and 3.4 inches wide.
     
    The only non-clear bags that will be permitted into The Pfield under the policy are small bags no larger than the size of a hand, like a clutch with or without the strap.
     
    Backpacks, duffle bags, purses, large fanny packs, large tote bags, diaper bags and camera cases are among the non-approved bags at The Pfield beginning in August 2019.
     
    Exceptions to the clear bag policy will be made for credentialed media and those with necessary medical items after proper inspection at designated areas.
     
    Fans who recently attended sporting events at The University of Texas recently should be familiar with clear bag policies as UT Athletics implemented its own clear bag policy within the last two years.
     
    Universities across the nation have begun using clear bag policies at sporting events and school districts are beginning to follow suit in an effort to ensure a safe and secure environment at the games.
     
    Austin ISD, Lake Travis ISD and Hays CISD as just a few of the school districts in the area to announce clear bag policies within the past year. A number of San Antonio and Houston area school districts also implemented clear bag policies in 2018.

    2019-20 PfISD budget and compensation

    Work has begun on the 2019-2020 budget process. The current proposed budget will recommend a 3% raise for all PfISD employees, a more significant increase than in past years. As you may recall, due to budgetary constraints last year, the district was only able to give a 1.5% pay increase, which did not include all employees. 

    Currently, there is legislation which includes a possible $5,000 raise for all Texas teachers. We are monitoring this closely prior to formally recommending the 3% raise. The rationale for this is we want to provide for our employees, while at the same time ensuring that we have a fiscally responsible budget that can be maintained over time. In Pflugerville ISD, with nearly 1,900 teachers, a $5,000 raise would be an estimated annual cost of $9.4 million to the district, which would drastically impact the budget and will play a big part in salary decisions for the next several years. We are excited about the potential of recommending a 3% raise and we will keep you in the loop as actions at the legislature progress.

    Nominate a student volunteer for 2019 Student Heroes Award

    The State Board of Education (SBOE) is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Student Heroes Award.

    The Student Heroes Award program recognizes Texas public school students in prekindergarten through high school who voluntarily work to assist or benefit their fellow Texas students.

    Award requirements include the following:

    • The service, assistance or good deed must be voluntary and not part of any curriculum, graduation requirement, class, or community project.
    • The service, assistance or good deed must benefit other students in Texas, either individually or collectively.
    • The benefit may be to students of one campus, a district, or a community.

    Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. (DST) March 12.

    Recipients of the Student Heroes awards will be announced in May. A plaque will be awarded to each Student Hero by his or her State Board member.

    Employee Transfer Window Eliminated

    To provide our current campus employees with the most flexibility, PfISD has eliminated the previously used "transfer window." Effective this year, campus employees wishing to transfer will no longer be required to apply for transfers during the "transfer window." If an employee sees a job posted within the district they would like to apply for, they need only to inform their campus principal in writing prior to applying. Employees will be required to apply for interested vacancies via our online employment application system. Additionally, the last day for transfer will be moved up one week to June 7th.

    Employees who were involuntarily reassigned earlier this school year will have the first opportunity to transfer back to their previous campus.

     

    PfISD creates new Surplus Procedures

    In an effort to provide better service to our campus staff members, the district's procedures for Surplus staff have changed for the upcoming school year.

    Once a campus is aware that staff must be reassigned to another campus due to a decrease in student enrollment, it will begin a three-phase process to determine which staff members in the impacted grade level will be reassigned:

    1. Any volunteers from the specified grade level
    2. Seniority of staff in the grade level impacted
    3. In the event of a tie, a staff member's total years of seniority in PfISD and outside school districts will be factored in.

    Paraprofessional staff members are subject to the above rules as well. The Superintendent has ultimate discretion for movement of staff members. Any staff members currently under performance review will not be eligible to be reassigned.

    District honors employees for years of service

    Pflugerville ISD hosted its 2019 Employee Service Awards Banquet at the Courtyard Marriott in February. 

    District staff and faculty members were honored for 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service. Each honoree received handmade ceramic pottery.

    PfISD Board of Trustees President Vernagene Mott provided opening remarks. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Killian served as guest speaker.

    In May, the district will honor its campus teachers of the year; Elementary, Rookie and Secondary Teachers of the Year; Support Staff of the Year; Humanitarians of the Year; and retirees.

    Eleven students named to all-state band

    Pflugerville ISD placed 11 students on all-state band rosters this year.

    Weiss High School sophomore Shonn Olegario was named all-state for the second consecutive year. Olegario made Texas Music Educators Association All-State Sinfonietta Orchestra in tenor trombone.

    Seven Hendrickson High School students earned all-state recognition, including seniors Gihvon Bilal (clarinet) and Aidan Grivas (clarinet), who also were named all-state last year.

    Hendrickson sophomore Marc Abdallah (oboe) and senior Samuel Simcik (cornet/trumpet) were named to the TMEA All-State Philharmonic Orchestra, while junior Brayden Heath (flute), sophomore Hoang-Nghi Nguyen (oboe) and sophomore Mason Willy (euphonium) were named to the TMEA All-State Concert Band.

    From Pflugerville High School, sophomore Hannah Raymond (clarinet), senior Jordan Washington (cornet/trumpet) and sophomore Dylan Le tenor (trombone) were named to the TMEA All-State Concert Band.

    Pflugerville ISD band students participated in local auditions on Dec. 7-8, with top students advancing to regional auditions. From there, top students advanced to area auditions Jan. 12 in Duncanville, where all-state finalists from Region 26 were determined.

    District will continue Block Schedule for 2019-2020 

    PfISD will continue to operate on a Block Schedule for all four high schools in the upcoming school year. Please note that there may be changes made within the block schedule as needed. 

     

    2018 Bond Update 

    Pflugerville ISD is currently on schedule to open Elementary School No. 22 in the 2020-21 school year.

    Middle School No. 7 is scheduled to open in the 2021-22 school year and Elementary No. 23 is expected to open in the 2022-23 school year. 

    Local voters in November authorized a $332 million bond package for PfISD, for projects to include construction of three new schools, the expansion of Delco Primary and Dessau Elementary, land purchases and renovations to other facilities.

    Presidential Award Nominations and Applications Now Open

    The 2018-2019 nomination window for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program is now open. Teachers of grades 7-12 mathematics and science are encouraged to sign up to apply. High school teachers who teach a career and technical education (CTE) or technology applications course that can satisfy a mathematics or science graduation credit may apply under the appropriate category. The PAEMST awards are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

    The 2018-2019 nomination window will close on March 1, 2019. The application window will be open until May 1, 2019. Teachers may sign up to apply or be nominated for the award at www.paemst.org. If you know great teachers, encourage them to join this prestigious network of professionals. In Texas, eligible teachers who submit a completed application by May 1, 2019 will receive 25 CPE hours.

    To provide our current campus employees with the most flexibility, PfISD has eliminated the previously used "transfer window." Effective this year, campus employees wishing to transfer will no longer be required to apply for transfers during the "transfer window." If an employee sees a job posted within the district they would like to apply for, they need only to inform their campus principal in writing prior to applying. Employees will be required to apply for interested vacancies via our online employment application system. Additionally, the last day for transfer will be moved up one week to June 7th.

    Employees who were involuntarily reassigned earlier this school year will have the first opportunity to transfer back to their previous campus.

     

    PfISD creates new Surplus Procedures

    In an effort to provide better service to our campus staff members, the district's procedures for Surplus staff have changed for the upcoming school year.

    Once a campus is aware that staff must be reassigned to another campus due to a decrease in student enrollment, it will begin a three-phase process to determine which staff members in the impacted grade level will be reassigned:

    1. Any volunteers from the specified grade level
    2. Seniority of staff in the grade level impacted
    3. In the event of a tie, a staff member's total years of seniority in PfISD and outside school districts will be factored in.

    Paraprofessional staff members are subject to the above rules as well. The Superintendent has ultimate discretion for movement of staff members. Any staff members currently under performance review will not be eligible to be reassigned.

     

    PHS to host AACTM Math Conference

    On Saturday, Jan. 26 PHS will host the AACTM math conference and will have over 200 math teachers in attendance, half of whom will be Pflugerville teachers, and many will serve as presenters. Good luck PfISD Math Teachers!

     

    Calling All Key Women Educators

    We are proud and excited to announce that Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honor society of key women educators, will be chartering a chapter for Pflugerville Educators on March 30, 2019. DKG’s mission is to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. If any of you may have been a member of DKG in a different state or chapter; it would be great to have you rejoin as one of our charter members. 

    We will have 2 informational meetings:

    • Saturday, Feb. 9, 2–4 p.m. at the home of Debby Krueger in the historic Kuempel Haus at 16422 Cameron Rd.
    • Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7-8 p.m. in the Board Room at the PfiSD Administration Building

    Copperfield ES Teacher highlighted on Good Morning America

    Congratulations to Margaret Olivarez, a third-grade teacher at Copperfield ES, who was highlighted on Good Morning America in January for her efforts to inspire her students to dream big. Olivarez wrote to universities across the country asking for college t-shirts to give to her students. Her letters brought in enough t-shirts for every student on campus.
