AP Capstone

Aug. 24, 2018

AP Capstone Twenty-eight Pflugerville ISD high school students were honored last week for outstanding performance in a two-year AP program and other AP classes.

Each of the Connally, Hendrickson and Pflugerville high school students took part in the College Board’s AP Capstone Diploma program, which was launched in 2014. PfISD began participation in Capstone during the 2015-16 school year.

The program consists of two, yearlong courses, usually taken during sophomore and junior years of high school.

The Capstone courses – AP Seminar and AP Research – differ from other high school classes by using an interdisciplinary approach toward preparing students for college, instead of focusing on specific subjects.

Much like graduate students would work on dissertations, AP Capstone students investigate real-world issues, develop evidence-based arguments and defend their scholarly work.

The College Board developed the AP Capstone Diploma program at the request of higher education professionals, who identified a need for high school students to begin mastering these skills before college.

AP Capstone has been endorsed by more than 250 universities nationwide, and included approximately 2,500 graduates worldwide in 2016.

AP scores for both courses are based on teacher assessment of student presentation components and College Board scoring of student-written components, plus an end-of-course exam (for AP Seminar only).

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing receive the AP Capstone Diploma. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four additional AP Exams receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

The award is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges after the award has been conferred.

On Aug. 13, PfISD’s 28 Capstone Diploma recipients were recognized in an afternoon ceremony at the district administration building.

Only 242 high school students in Texas earned Capstone Diploma recognition for the 2017 exam.
