Happy New Years from PCMS

Posted by Zachary Kleypas on 1/10/2020

Greetings Pumas,

Happy Friday and Happy New Years!!! Let’s make 2020 the best year yet by sticking to our motto of “keep improving, always, in all ways.”

IMPORTANT WEATHER UPDATE:

Due to approaching weather, all after school events including tutorials have been cancelled for today, 1/10/20. Students have been instructed to make phone calls home to arrange rides if necessary.

Class Talks:

Our theme this school year is 20/20 vision! We want to have a crystal clear vision of what we expect, our goals we are reaching for, and the steps we are taking to get every student there. SO to kick off 2020 on the right foot, we held class talks with every student, in every grade level on Wednesday. We know we have awesome students and awesome staff and that the number one deterrent for us being successful is students not meeting the crystal clear expectations we have set. Thus, we reviewed all of those expectations from the start of the year. I would love for you to have a copy of that presentation and remind your kiddo of the things we ask of them. When we are all following these things, Park Crest runs like a well-oiled machine and students, staff, and families are happy and learning at very high levels! Here is a copy of that presentation: 2020 PCMS Presentation

High School Course Fairs:

Parents and guardians of 8th graders in Pflugerville ISD should mark their calendars for the upcoming high school course fairs on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m.

These course fairs will be hosted at all four high schools, and parents are encouraged to attend with their children at their respective high school for next school year to tour the campus, learn about courses offered and more.

Class Counselors and Principals will be on hand to help students and parents select courses for next school year and answer any questions they may have that will assist them with the transition from middle school to high school.

If you are unsure which high school your child is zoned to attend, you can enter your address into the District’s interactive boundary map online at www.pfisd.net.

8th Grade Invasion:

On Wednesday, January 15th, during the school day, all of our 8th grade students and their teachers will travel to their zoned high school to experience “High School for a day”. The event will be held during the school day so there will be no interruption to morning or afternoon transportation/buses/etc.

Students will be able to eat lunch in the high school cafeteria using their normal school account. If they would like to bring lunch, that will be allowed as they always do.

*students must attend the school they are currently zoned to attend (either PHS or HHS). However, if you plan on transferring or moving to a different PfISD school, then we highly encourage you to visit that campus during the aforementioned evening course fair.

Parent Seminar Cohort:

We have an awesome opportunity for you! Park Crest Middle School in conjunction with The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) are going to provide a parenting and family program right here at Park Crest!

SFP is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program. Phoenix House provides a meal for the families on the evenings that the program is implemented. There are also various incentives given to the participants throughout the program. SFP is comprised of 10 weekly sessions that are 2 hours each.

The families eat a meal for the first 30 minutes. We then separate the families into 3-4 groups for 1 hour: (1) Parents, (2) Children, (3) Teens (if needed), and (4) Childcare, youth 6 years and under**. The last 20-30 minutes, we bring the families together to participate in a group activity.

A Tip from Officer Lopez:

This week’s tip from Officer Lopez is to be aware and have conversations with your child about social media. Apps like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Kik, and many more are great ways for kids to connect, but often appeal for being much less supervised than actual conversations. Thus, they are havens for disrespect, bullying, and inappropriate content. Please ensure that you monitor which apps your child has access to and what they are doing on those apps.

Caution your kiddos about uploading photos, videos and comments because they live forever online and anyone can see them. Often times students believe the things they are saying, posting, and doing online are much more private than they truly are.

On Tuesday, January 14th Park Crest Middle School is hosting a STAR Party. The event is free and open to students and families. There will be multiple telescopes and experts on site to help individuals experience looking deep into space! We are exciting to bring this to the community and hope you will join us. The event will be held on the small track located on the side of the building (to avoid large parking lot lights). Simply park in the front or the back of the building and walk around to the side with the small track and basketball courts.

The event begins at 6:30pm and will last until approximately 7:30pm. I hope you will swing by and check it out!

Most sincerely,
