    Dear PfISD Parents/Guardians,

We have updated our district’s guidelines and protocols for On-Campus Learning and Virtual Learning for the upcoming school year. Please visit our website, www.pfisd.net/fall2020, to view these additional guidelines.

We hope this additional information will help parents to choose between remaining in online virtual learning or returning to campus for in-person instruction when both options become available. The deadline to complete this choice form has been extended to Aug. 6. The form parents are asked to complete is titled "Registration Selection SY20-21" and can be found in your Skyward Parent Portal. You must be logged into Skyward with your parent username and password and not a student's information in order to view or complete this form.

If you have already completed your student’s choice form and you would like to change selection before Aug. 6, please contact your campus registrar to request changing your selection.

    Thank you,
    PfISD Communications

    Gracias,

    July 29, 2020

    Dear PfISD Parents/Guardians,

This is our final week before teachers report back to campuses to prepare for the 2020-21 school year. I know our administrative staff and Return to Learn taskforce have been hard at work to prepare as well.

This week’s update is going to be long, but that is because it has a LOT of IMPORTANT information in it. I encourage you to please read through all of it because you will need this information, and in many cases, it is information many of you have been asking for directly.

I am proud of how our staff have responded to this pandemic and how we have continued to be flexible during the closures and planning process. I also am thankful for the support and feedback we have received from parents over the summer. This has been a team effort to get ready for the fall, and your input helped us a lot throughout this process.

COVID-19 has changed the way we do many things, but it has not changed how much we care about our staff and students. Every student, teacher, administrator, bus driver, custodian, cook and more are valued members of our Pfamily. We will continue to put their health and safety first in all that we do.

    Online vs. In-Person Choice Extension

I know many of you have voiced concern with wanting as much information as possible before completing the form to choose between remaining in online virtual learning or returning to campus for in-person instruction when both options become available.

Because of this concern and with updated learning and safety protocol plans being released soon, the deadline to complete this choice form has been extended to Aug. 6.

There also has been some confusion regarding this form.

The form parents are asked to complete is titled "Registration Selection SY20-21" and can be found in your Skyward Parent Portal. You must be logged into Skyward with your parent username and password and not a student's information in order to view or complete this form. Your students are already registered for the school year. This is a form where you are "registering" for either online virtual learning or on-campus instruction.

This form must be completed for each child you have in PfISD. If you do not have a username and password for the Skyward Parent Portal, please email parentportal@pfisd.net. Our Technology Department has added some more temporary staff members to assist with this process as we have received an influx of requests for the last few weeks.

On the "Registration Selection SY20-21" form, you will choose if you wish to continue with online virtual learning or return to campus for in-person instruction when students are allowed back on campuses. Parents will have the option to update or change their choice at the end of the nine weeks grading period. If you change your mind on your selection before Aug. 6 you may contact your campus registrar to request changing your selection.

It is important that you complete this form by Aug. 6 because there are questions regarding technology that you have available to your student and whether or not you plan to use the bus transportation system for your child.

These questions will help our Technology Department assess the technology needs of our students and plan for the distribution of devices again. We have recently purchased more laptops and tablet devices for our students.

The bus questions will aide our Transportation Department in determining bus routes, drivers, and more so that we may ensure we get our students to school and home in a timely manner.

    Updated Plans Coming Soon

Many parents and staff members have asked about seeing finalized plans for what virtual learning will look like and our on-campus learning and safety protocols. The Return to Learn Taskforce is working on those plans as you are reading this, and the District will provide you with updated plans with more details on or before next Monday.

I can assure you that online instruction will look very different than it did in the spring, considering that every school district in the state was forced to shift to virtual learning in March, and online instruction was patched together in a variety of ways.

Our staff has collaborated and found a solution we think will meet the TEA's mandates for virtual learning this fall. The TEA has communicated that virtual learning must include TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for students to meet. We also will return to the traditional A-F grading policy, and assignments will be graded on that scale. We will no longer be using the Pass/Fail grading we used in the spring.

    Mandatory Device Return
Now that all Summer School programs have come to an end, it is time for ALL laptops previously checked out for remote learning to be returned. All devices must be returned, regardless of the options you have chosen for the 2020-2021 Return to Learn. The District will be issuing new or upgraded devices to students in need in the next few weeks.

Devices must be returned to Timmerman Elementary during one of the following times:

    • Wednesday, Jul. 29 between 4-7 p.m.
    • Thursday, Jul. 30 between 10 a.m. to noon

    Remote Learning Camp by EDP
I'm excited to inform you that the PfISD Extended Day Program will offer a full day Remote Learning Camp during the District's Virtual Learning phase. This program will utilize a structured classroom setting to provide support for students' needs during this time.

The Remote Learning Camp will be at the following elementary campuses: Dearing, River Oaks, Rowe Lane, Spring Hill, and Wieland.

Beginning Aug. 10, the Remote Learning Camp will run from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the enrolled students completing that day's schoolwork virtually from the campus and participate in any EDP activities after the school day hours.

Registration for the Remote Learning Camp through PfISD EDP is open now until filled. The cost of the camp is $200 per week per child. A $25 non-refundable, non-transferable weekly deposit is due at the time of registration. The deposit will be applied to the weekly tuition for each child. There also is a $35 non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee. This registration fee will be waived for all families that have already completed the registration process for the 2020-21 After School Program.

For more details or to register, please visit the PfISD Extended Day Program website and click Registration to see the option for Remote Learning Camp. Or you can click HERE

While we are witnessing unprecedented times in our nation through the pandemic, I appreciate the patience of our Pfamily as we have been working to come up with plans for online and in-person teaching while putting the safety and health of our staff and students first. With information coming in every day from local and state health officials, it has been a very fluid situation that we will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.

I know it will be impossible to please every staff member or parent in our community with the decisions we make or the plans we implement, but please understand that the safety of everyone in our buildings is our first priority.

I am looking forward to seeing how our amazing teachers respond to this latest challenge and how they will engage our students to get them excited about learning.

Remember that we have lots of information available to you on our Return to Learn website linked below. Two new FAQs were added last week, and we will continue to update this site as more information becomes available.

O puede hacer clic aquí HERE

    Volver a aprender

    Dr. Douglas Killian
Superintendente de las escuelas de PfISD

    July 21, 2020

    Dear PfISD Parents/Guardians,

We are only a few weeks away from beginning the 2020-21 academic year, and many things have changed recently regarding what that will look like. As we continue to monitor this ever-changing situation, we will always put our staff and students' safety and health first. We have already announced that PfISD will begin the school year with virtual learning only for the first three weeks, and we continue to put things in place to ensure our staff's safety when we can resume learning in the classroom.

This has been a challenging time as we make preparations for the school year, only to see things need to change on the fly. I appreciate your dedication to our students and your patience as our district leadership works to find solutions and strategies to ensure a safe learning and working environment for everyone. Thank you so much for your passionate service!

    Virtual vs. On-campus Choice
This district recently sent out a communication to parents about registering for either online virtual instruction or on-campus when the option to return to campus becomes available.

It is essential to complete this registration online via Skyward Family Access so the district can plan accordingly for the fall as there are questions related to available technology in the home to our students and transportation plans/needs of our students. These additional questions will help the district distribute technology to parents and students for virtual learning and more.

If you need a Skyward Family Access account or have additional questions, please contact Skyward support at parentportal@pfisd.net. Please include your name, your student’s name, and your student’s school on the email to the parent portal. Please ensure that you log in using the Parent Portal and not the Student Portal.

The deadline to complete this choice form/registration is July 30. Families will have the option to change their mind regarding their selection until July 30. If you choose to change your student's learning method on or before July 30, please contact your campus registrar to change your selection. This choice will remain in effect for the first 9-week grading period; families will have the opportunity to change their student's learning method at the change of grading periods.

To learn more about virtual learning and on-campus learning, please visit www.pfisd.net/fall2020.

    Cleaning and Safety Protocol
Operations have been busy preparing and cleaning our campuses and buildings this summer to protect our staff already in the office and those still to return. Campuses are being treated with BIOPROTECT, which forms a covalent bond and creates a micro-biostatic protective layer that is unreceptive to microorganisms. This is the same product that is being used by the Mayo Clinic in their facilities. Plexiglass is being installed districtwide in campus reception areas, cafeteria serving lines, nurse clinics, and other areas. COVID-19 kits will be distributed to all classrooms. These kits include 100 vinyl gloves, 50 disposable masks, 300 wipes with a refillable dispenser, a box of tissue, and 16oz hand sanitizer, and these items will be replenished as needed.

The district will also have additional staff on hand during the school day to assist with cleaning and sanitizing campuses. Bus drivers and temporary custodians will be used to maximize our daytime workforce to help campuses with daily sanitation and cleaning. The district has already received a large shipment of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) materials from the Texas Education Agency, with orders for more. These PPE materials include disposable masks, cloth masks, hand sanitizers, and gloves. The district's Health and Safety department will also have thermometers, face shields, and N95 masks distributed per district guidelines. Additionally, every employee will also receive two district reusable cloth masks.

    More Virtual Learning FAQs Available
The district has set up a website to house all our information on returning to school this fall, both online and in-person. This site includes parent communications, overviews of current instructional and safety plans as well as lists of Frequently Asked Questions.

Our staff has updated these FAQs to include lists for General FAQs and Virtual Learning FAQs. These FAQ lists will be updated and modified as we get more information and plans become finalized, so please check our Return to Learn homepage frequently.

We know you want as much information as possible as soon as possible. Please understand we continue to communicate and work with health authorities and government officials, and that often information can change hours after we receive it. I encourage you to please keep checking back to our Return to Learn page for updates and any additional FAQs that may be added.

PfISD will continue striving to provide the best education we can for our students while putting our students and staff's health and safety first. Thank you for your support, patience, and understanding.

    July 14, 2020

I am on weekly, and sometimes daily, calls with my counterparts in other school districts, local health authorities and state education authorities. It seems we learn new information, new state mandates and new COVID-19 statistics every day. This constant stream of new information requires us to be flexible with our plans, and to always make our decisions with the safety of staff and students as our utmost priority. Lately we have seen infection rates continue to climb in Texas and here in the Austin area, increasing our concerns for the safety of our staff and students.

As such, I am announcing today that we will begin the school year 100% virtually for the first three weeks. At this time, three weeks is all that the Texas Education Agency will allow us to do in a 100% virtual environment. Under current mandates, after that time period, we will be required to open schools for on-campus instruction in addition to virtual instruction.

However, we continue to advocate for our teachers, staff, students, and community as we plan to launch the 2020-21 school year. This afternoon, Board President Vernagene Mott and I sent a letter to Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath, Governor Greg Abbott, and members of the state’s public education committees.

In the letter, we are asking for the following items:

    • suspension of in-person school and allowance for 100% virtual learning until the seven-day hospitalization average is five or less, the threshold set by the Austin-Travis County public health agency for a stage 2 response;
    • flexibility to realistically minimize classroom ratios and provide social distancing;
    • the suspension of STAAR and the A-F state accountability system for the 2020-21 school year;
    • additional funding to supplement costs incurred by districts to provide safe and effective learning; and
    • a commitment to allocate current or future federal money specified for schools as a supplement to existing funding commitments by the state.

This is a joint effort with other area school districts, to ask TEA to provide the same amount of flexibility to districts as we are providing to our students and families. Texas is a big state, and what may work for one area of the state may not in others.

On the academic front, last Thursday, we released the first drafts of our Return to Learn plans for on-campus and virtual instruction. As you may imagine, we have received many questions from parents and staff alike and we appreciate the feedback. While it is challenging to keep up with the volume of questions, please know we are working to answer all questions as well as updating our website to provide guidance to both staff and parents.

As I mentioned above, right now there are likely more questions than there are concrete answers. This is the nature of adjusting to a fluid situation with frequently changing parameters and requirements. However, please know that we are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to ensure our staff’s safety and the safety of our students. The answers may not come at the exact time we want them, and they may change between today and August 13th, but working together as one PfISD Pfamily we will build the best possible plan to meet the needs of our staff, students and supporters.

In the best interest of children,

    • suspensión de la escuela presencial y subsidio para el aprendizaje virtual al 100% hasta que el promedio de hospitalización de siete días sea de cinco o menos, el criterio establecido por Austin-Travis County public health agency para una respuesta de etapa 2;
    • flexibilidad para minimizar de forma realista las proporciones de las clases y proporcionar un distanciamiento físico;
    • la suspensión de la prueba STAAR y el sistema de responsabilidad del estado A-F para el año escolar 2020-21;
    • financiación adicional para complementar los costos incurridos por los distritos para proporcionar un aprendizaje seguro y eficaz; y
    • un compromiso de asignar el dinero federal actual o futuro especificado para las escuelas como complemento de los compromisos de financiación existentes por parte del estado.

    July 14, 2020

We continue to advocate for our teachers, staff, students, and community as we plan to launch the 2020-21 school year. This afternoon, Board President Vernagene Mott and Superintendent Doug Killian, Ph.D. sent a letter to Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath, Governor Greg Abbott, and members of the state’s public education committees.

In the letter, we are asking for the following items:

    • suspension of in-person school and allowance for 100% virtual learning until the seven-day hospitalization average is five or less, the threshold set by the Austin-Travis County public health agency for a stage 2 response;
    • flexibility to realistically minimize classroom ratios and provide social distancing;
    • the suspension of STAAR and the A-F state accountability system for the 2020-21 school year;
    • additional funding to supplement costs incurred by districts to provide safe and effective learning; and
    • a commitment to allocate current or future federal money specified for schools as a supplement to existing funding commitments by the state.

The letter comes after TEA announced rules and guidelines for opening the school year that required districts to offer 100% in-person instruction for all students, making it impossible to ensure students and staff stay in small groups and socially distanced for the entire school day. The letter also addresses the state’s use of the federal CARES Act funding for schools to supplant its existing funding commitment to schools, rather than a supplement to cover the increased cost of operations during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"No one wants to be back in the classroom more than our teachers," Dr. Killian said. "We are excited to see our kids again and resume our regular schedules and activities, but we cannot do so at the potential cost to our teachers, staff, and students. We hope you will reconsider the previous mandates and do what is truly in all Texas school children's best interests."

    July 7, 2020

    Dear PfISD Parents/Guardians,

I hope you had a fun and safe July 4th holiday. Although many of our vacations and other summer plans may have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hopefully, everyone had a few days off to relax and recharge. We are excited to share some of the work done by our Re-Entry Task Force later this week. We have created a webpage (www.pfisd.net/fall2020) to house all district information pertaining to our re-entry this Fall. We encourage you to visit it often as we will continue to add information to the page as decisions are made.

Our team has been working hard since before graduation to determine how we will conduct instruction for the upcoming school year, and provide for the safety of our students and staff. We have sent out surveys to parents and staff members asking for their opinions on both online and on-site instruction, and have been reviewing parent and staff responses received to date and incorporating that feedback as we draft our plans. The survey links below are open through Friday, July 10 – please send us your feedback. We are also in constant contact with state officials for guidance.

Later this week we will post a video on the district’s YouTube channel outlining some of the options the district is evaluating. Please remember, these are still options and no final decisions have been made. While we cannot plan for every possible unknown scenario, our goal as a district is to provide options to our families and staff for the upcoming school year. Initially, we planned to host an online community meeting; however, after receiving feedback, we will present a video to allow families to watch at their convenience, as many times as necessary. We will take feedback from parents, students, staff and community members via our Let’s Talk system on the district website; and we will compose an FAQ from the questions collected to be posted on the Return to Learn website.

    Fall 2020 Parent Survey*
While the district is awaiting guidance from the state regarding the Fall semester, we would also like to receive feedback from our families. We ask all parents to complete the survey below to provide feedback on the Spring 2020 semester and information for the upcoming school year.

Please click on the link to the survey below in your native language to provide feedback. The survey will close on July 10, and the responses collected will be shared with the Re-Entry Task Force and used to help make recommendations to the Superintendent and PfISD Board of Trustees.

    Library Services Suspended
Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in our area, PfISD will no longer offer library services effective July 8. This includes both curbside and open library sites. We appreciate your understanding as we work to keep staff and patrons as safe as possible. Students can still participate in our Summer Reading Challenge activities. You can find eBooks and Digital Audiobooks on the Keep PfISD Reading! Site.

    Online Student Verification Process
Our online verification process for the 2020-2021 school year is available online for all students who were enrolled during the 19-20 school year. We request that parents complete the two online forms for the upcoming school year using the Skyward Parent Portal. The online Student Verification Form and the Student Health form will replace our traditional first day of school packets. If you will please log in to your Skyward Family Access account and complete the forms, we would appreciate it. We are requesting that you complete the forms before school starts.

If you need a Skyward Family Access account or have additional questions, please contact Skyward support at parentportal@pfisd.net. Please include your name, your student’s name, and your student’s school on the email to the parent portal. Please ensure that you log in using the Parent Portal and not the Student Portal. Families may translate the forms using Google Translate.

I know there is a lot going on, and we are all glued to the televisions and smartphones waiting for news updates, and I know it is frustrating to not have all the answers about the upcoming school year. Our staff is working as quickly as possible with the information we are given from our state, city and county, along with input from our staff and parents. Please bear with us and know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and all decisions are made with this in mind.

    June 30, 2020

    Dear PfISD Parents,

Our Re-Entry Task Force has continued to meet and make plans for the upcoming school year, and we are closer to being able to share drafts of the plans with our parents and staff. We anticipate sharing these draft plans next week and asking for parent, student, and staff feedback, to ensure we are responsive to your safety concerns. We know right now that our basic plan must include two options for our families to choose from: an in-person instruction option and an online instruction option. Our plan at this time is to allow parents to register their children for in-person or online instruction in late July.

The latest guidance we are receiving from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires an in-person option. After the registration period for students to select online or in-person instruction is over, we will look at online instruction needs and consider staff requests and medical concerns.

Our teachers and staff did a fantastic job standing up an online school with virtually no preparation time this past Spring. Going into next year, the expectations for students, teachers, and school being online will be much higher. TEA has been slowly releasing guidance on rigor, funding, and instructional expectations that exponentially increase both staff and student requirements for online instruction. As such, we will provide parents and students with clear requirements and expectations before registering for online classes to ensure they can make an educated decision on which option will work for them. Based on the information we have received, please be prepared for online instructional time commitments to equal that of in-person instruction. Additionally, grading will be the same for both in-person and online instruction; online instruction grading will not be modified from our standard policy and procedures.

One thing that we want our community and staff to be aware of as we draft plans are the adjustments that we have to make as new guidance comes out, along with the ever-evolving landscape of the pandemic. You may have seen other districts release plans for next year and wonder why we have not yet. The answer is two-fold. First, state requirements and guidance continues to change from day-to-day. We have seen districts release a plan, only to have that plan have to change due to new guidelines. This was very similar to the guidance we received around graduations; it evolved and revised several times during our planning stage. Secondly, the virus outbreak itself is changing what might be acceptable by August. We want to ensure that our plans will fit in with whatever directives we are under from the state, county, and city. Please bear with us as we respond to the latest safety suggestions and guidance and know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and all decisions are made with this in mind.

As I said above, I am proud of the efforts by our staff to very quickly prop up remote (online) learning for our students this past Spring during the pandemic. They worked around the clock to create systems to reach all of our students and provide instruction in whatever manner was available. However, we know that going forward, we must begin thinking of online instruction for the foreseeable future. As such, we must create a more robust online learning experience for both our students and staff. The online instruction guidance from TEA requires a more robust system for instruction, more in-depth online instruction, and necessary tracking of students online for attendance and funding purposes. On Monday, our Board of Trustees took action to purchase Canvas, an online student Learning Management System (LMS). To meet those requirements we looked for a system that was capable of providing the required student tracking, had the ability for staff to upload and connect their Google Classroom work, was potentially familiar to staff and parents who have attended online college courses, would help to familiarize our kids with what some universities use for distance education, and would be a one-stop, easy-to-use system.

We will be asking staff to become accustomed to using the Canvas LMS over the next several weeks and will be adjusting our beginning of the year training to include LMS training for staff and safety training. However, we are still making preparations for students and staff returning to classrooms in August. We have received several shipments of personal protective equipment (PPE), protective barriers, and additional hand sanitizers. We have also put additional safety measures into place for our buildings, including requiring face covering for our staff, hiring extra custodians for additional cleaning throughout the day, requiring staff to complete health screening questionnaires, and limiting campus visitors.

We have created a webpage (www.pfisd.net/fall2020) to house all district information pertaining to our re-entry this fall. We encourage you to visit it often as we will continue to add information to the page as decisions are made.
