Greetings Bobcat Families!

June will be here before you know it, yea summer vacation! Meanwhile, Brookhollow's staff are still hard at work planning for continued growth for the 21-22 school year. The staff is collaboratively working with a purpose so that we all can continue to live out our school mission of Learning Together and Leading the Way. As always, we will continue our focus on educating the whole child: academically, socially, emotionally, and physically... see below for a few events for the remainder of the year!

I write to you on Mother’s Day weekend, a very special day in all our hearts. As I wish “Happy Mother’s Day” to my own mother and grandmother, I extend the greeting to all our mothers for you are the heartbeat of the home, that unifying pulse that has never been more important.

Greetings Bobcat Families,

Mother’s Day is celebrated differently from family to family but the spirit of the day remains the same.  We honor that person we call “mom” for being that special person in our lives that sticks with us through thick and thin.  My best wishes to all for a Happy Mother’s Day.  

Thank you all for the tremendous amount of trust and support you have given us this year.  We have missed having our parents, grandparents, and volunteers in our building due to the Covid-19 safety protocols.  We certainly hope the fall brings more opportunities to open our school doors to our community. Enjoy the beauty of spring and the final days of school.

Greetings Bobcat Parents and Guardians,

“In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.” - Mother Teresa

In her quote, Mother Teresa very powerfully captures important wisdom about how to approach life (and schooling) to make it more fulfilling and significant. Teaching and learning offers us all numerous opportunities to focus on a number of “small things” that culminate over time to produce students that are prepared to do the “great things” of life. With this in mind, ultimately as a school community we are judged by the actions of our students and the way new student learning connects and impacts the world beyond our school.   

As a former elementary teacher and middle school administrator, I value the social and emotional development of each child as they transition from their primary years through early adolescence. I value life-long learning and aim to continue to make your child’s learning experience at Brookhollow Elementary School engaging and exciting to the end. Our middle of the year data shows we are gaining ground in some areas or at least maintaining due to the pandemic. Our teachers and staff put in much time and effort to close gaps prior to the pandemic and I want to applaud them for their "hard work" as this was part of my welcome back speech at the beginning of the school year. But as we round the corner toward the last leg of the race; spring break, taking a breath to gain the energy for the last part of this marathon and we plan to finish strong with your support. Students need to be visible, on time, present and engaged. We promise to create memorable moments and make them the best of learners with you by our side.  

As the principal of Brookhollow Elementary School, I believe that it is my responsibility to maintain and to continue to build a supportive and collaborative spirit at our school. Together as a school community, we will build on the traditions of the past and meet the challenges of the future in innovative and exciting ways. Moreover, as we begin our work with the campus improvement plan for the 21-22 school year, reach out to your child's teacher or myself about your needs and ideas. More information to come soon!

Parents Fourth 9-weeks Method of Instruction:

Our fourth 9-weeks method of instruction request window has closed. At this time if you requested by the deadline to return on March 22 you have been accepted. Yea and welcome back!!  A few things to expect upon your return:

• Teacher should send an official in-person acceptance letter by March 11
• Teacher should send a brief class letter with communication links and updates by March 12
• Teacher should schedule a brief new parent orientation class update by March 30 via zoom

Reminders:

• No school March 12. Our BES staff will utilize the time to prep and plan for the 4th 9-weeks. 
• Don't forget to turn clocks forward! Sunday, March 14 is daylight savings.

Happy March! I cannot believe we are in the month of March! I am incredibly excited that we were able to return to learning completing one more week of our preplanned Black History Month events. A wise man, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., once said, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”

This past month, we celebrated those individuals that paved the foundation for us to continue to build on. I want to encourage our young scholars that their voices and words have power and when positively put to use can bring significant change. The Diversity Committee and staff planned many engaging activities for our young scholars to learn about a mixture of historical and current African American figures making a positive impact on society. We finished the month of February learning and reviewing African Americans that impacted our country or world. Displays of student artifacts resonate throughout the school building as well as discussions were heard in our virtual learning environment. 

Important: Diversity Fair Craft Pickup for Virtual Students is March 2: We are preparing and providing crafts bags for our Virtual Diversity Fair which is being held on Friday, March 5. Our Diversity Committee will be passing out these craft bags on Tuesday, March 2 from 4-5 p.m. so your kids can participate in some fun craft activities represented from each country. We will be out in front of the school by the circular parking lot. If you cannot make it this day please call your child's teacher to make an appointment for pickup between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Greetings Bobcat Families,

Taking a deep sigh of some relief - the sun is shinning and although many are still struggling... every little bit of hope counts as we gain strength to move forward. It has not been easy as you know; with leadership comes the trepidation of those you spend the majority of you day with that would be the students, parents, and staff of the Brookhollow Family community!

I was able to be in touch via text with the BES Leadership team of teachers Monday night as we began to check in on one another. Let me say, such admirable leaders! Along with the teachers, the leaders were keeping lines of communication open with their teams and  departments as well as the school community. With no water, internet and power...you just hope that all are at least safe. There was no doubt we were in survival mode the last few days, doesn't matter where you were in the state. My mother lives alone in Katy, Texas, so the concern of our elderly runs close to home - a blessing, rescued and with family still. I've heard many of you used your fireplace and gas stoves to stay warm, cars for small generators and of course the mounds of snow for water the first four days. Mr. Harris had to drive me during the peak of the storm, Monday, outside the neighborhood to find wifi to begin communication via phone. It has been an emotional roller coaster to say the least.

As we are happily preparing to get back to teaching our students; while configuring how to fix the roof in our homes, pipes in our attics, and locate clean water, much thanks goes out to our PfISD cabinet and Area Executive Directors who continue to keep us informed offering flexibility and has worked around the clock. As much as we want to be in school virtually or in-person ready to learn, we must consider everyone's circumstances before such decisions are made. Brookhollow sits strong as a 25+ year school; as of today we have little to no damage to our building structure and pipes, very grateful. Some areas of the building are being reviewed as we speak but looking positive for reopening this week once we get the green light.

We also know our families and staff members need time to recover personally from the continuing fallout of last week’s winter storm. 

As we begin to move forward...​​​​​​​

• Assignments "grace and flexibility":  work assigned the week of Feb. 15th  will be the same for the week of Feb. 22nd and no new work will be given (as applicable on individual basis) please use the time to catch up on these assignments if able once we are back to remote learning Tuesday, Feb. 23. Reach out to your child's teacher for assistance or questions beginning tomorrow Feb. 23rd. 
• Absences: Waiting for guidance, moreover, we continue to give flexibility for turning in assignments and supporting every situation related to last week
• Checking In: teachers were asked on February 18 to reach out, if able to our students. If you know of anyone who is in need or may not be able to receive this email,  please don't hesitate to reach out to me or the classroom teacher so we can work as a Bobcat family to assist those in need. 
  • Our students' social and emotional needs continue to be a priority. We also recognize that some of your families have incurred damage to your homes or other hardships as a result of the winter weather we experienced last week. Please reach out to our campus counselor or myself should your family need assistance. We continue to monitor our students well being and are here for them.  
• Updates and changes to BES school wide event calendar as of today, Feb. 22.
  • We understand that are students need to have their celebrations and memorable moments especially those leaving us in May- 5th grade, moreover teachers want to continue the Valentine's class event...look for their email for when this will take place this week. 
  • BES Virtual Diversity Fair is cancelled for this week and is moving to an alternate date more information to come this week
  • More updates for events and programs will come that are being rescheduled from last and this week

Last, as students and staff return to our school buildings soon, please join me in thanking the hundreds of PfISD employees across all our operational areas who have done amazing work around the clock to make sure our schools are ready to receive students this week. Many have put district needs ahead of taking care of their own homes that incurred damage last week. We are so grateful to each of these members of the PfISD Family for their Collaborative Spirit and Collective Greatness. 

We can’t wait to greet our students in person or virtually soon!

In the depths of winter, you and your child may be looking at the calendar of observances for opportunities for special activities. Besides Valentine's Day and Black History Month, there are days devoted to emotional health, physical activities, and wellness challenges—all of which provide opportunities to expand understanding while having fun learning. Your local community centers, health organizations, and of course Brookhollow Elementary may have events in coordination with some of these special days and observances. Note that Leap Day occurred in February of 2020, but there is no Leap Day or Leap Year in 2021.

We also celebrate our school counselor, Mrs. Jennifer Cunningham this month.  Mrs. Cunningham, you have sacrificed your  time and efforts to make a difference in our lives. Thank you for your commitment to the potential of students everywhere. Thank you for the dedicated nudging, and the reminders. You inspire us to help, to push and to nudge each other — and we’re grateful.  "And maybe, just maybe, we all have the potential to embody the spirit of a counselor. Maybe we can all embrace that role and help those around us. Yes, even you."

Greetings Bobcat Families,

I hope each of you had a restful and meaningful time with your family and friends during the winter break. As they returned to school this week in person or virtual, the atmosphere was very positive.

As educators at Brookhollow Elementary, we are thankful for all opportunities to impact young lives. Our students are the reason we’re here. My observation these first few days made for some early celebrations; foundations for great learning and behavior was observed throughout. Awesome job, BES staff and students!

We are approaching our next deadline for parents/guardians to update or change their child's instruction method for the third 9-weeks grading period that begins January 6. If you would like to change how your child is receiving instruction, you must contact Mrs. Mitchell by December 9 or complete the brief 1-minute survey using the link below.

If your child is currently learning virtually, this is your chance to indicate you would like your child to return to on-campus learning beginning in January. Conversely, this also is another opportunity for you to switch your child from in-person learning to virtual.
