Dual Language Program

    Our Dual Language Programs

Bilingual Education Programs are designed to allow Emergent Bilinguals  who share a common home language to access the State’s general curriculum and improve their proficiency of both English and their home language. Pflugerville Independent School District has implemented a Dual Language program model to address the instructional needs of Emergent Bilinguals.

Dual Language Programs can be implemented through One-Way and Two-Way models.

    • One-way programs consist of students whose home language is primarily Spanish. They are all collectively learning English, one way: from Spanish to English. The campuses that have one-way classes are Ruth Barron, Caldwell, Copperfield, Wilhelmina Delco, Dessau, Highland Park, Parmer Lane, Pflugerville Elementary, Riojas, River Oaks and Spring Hill.
    • Two-way programs consist of both students whose home language is primarily Spanish and students whose home language is other than Spanish.  Both groups are learning an additional language, two ways: from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. The campuses with two way programs are Ruth Barron, Caldwell, Highland Park, Riojas, and if we have enough future participants, River Oaks.

Dual Language Program Goals, Curriculum & Assessment

  • Dual Language Program Goals

    • To promote and develop biliteracy and bilingualism in Spanish and English for Emergent Bilinguals  and all other students participating in the PfISD Dual Language Immersion Program.

    • To facilitate student high academic achievement in all content areas in Spanish and English. Specifically, students will be on grade level in reading in their home language while simultaneously growing their abilities to speak, listen, read, and write in their partner language.

    • To meet the affective needs of the students by developing multiculturalism through partnerships with students, families, teachers, and administrators to create an inclusive environment with equitable practices for all members of the PfISD community regardless of linguistic or cultural background.

    Curriculum and Assessment

    • Instructional Framework: Students participating in the PfISD DL program follow an instructional framework that fosters biliteracy.

    • Support for Reading: If the campus instructional support team identifies a need for your child to receive additional reading support, it is customary for students to receive this reading intervention in their home language.

    • District Assessments: Throughout the year, instruction and assessments take place in both languages in order to measure students’ progress towards biliteracy.

    • STAAR Assessment: Students begin to take state assessments once they reach third grade. The Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) makes STAAR language testing decisions.
