    Greetings Panthers,

Let's finish strong, be on time, do our work, and do our best!

IMPORTANT - PHS Prom Reminder to Seniors:

I am SO excited for this weekends PHS Prom (Saturday, 5/20/23). Prom is a memorable moment that symbolizes the celebration of the coming end of a student's K-12 educational journey.

That being said, it is also a time when excitement and emotions must be managed and responsibility is key.

Students, please remember that Prom is an extension of school. Anything that you do while at prom impacts things like graduation. Please remember that it is a drug and alcohol-free event.

We have not had any issues with this in recent history, and I would like to keep that streak going. Please do not come under the influence or in possession of any alcohol or smoking devices. We will have teachers, administrators, SRO’s, and security at the event (mainly to celebrate the night.. But also to ensure we keep everyone safe).

It is also important that I remind everyone that IF they plan on attending any events, parties, or gatherings after prom, to please act responsibly.

Please, as a parent and as your principal, I beg all of you to make safe plans for the evening and do not EVER drink and drive. It is not worth it. We love all of you too much for you to risk it.

    IMPORTANT - Summer School Information:

If your student needs summer school to recover credits or would like to take a course to get ahead, summer school seats will be limited. Please complete the link below to get your student signed up. Your student’s counselor must review the request before it can be submitted to the district. If you have questions, here is the district's information about summer school: https://www.pfisd.net/domain/301

    PHS Goes to NASA!

On Thursday, May 18th, 2023 a handful of staff members took 80 students to tour and experience all of the offerings at the NASA Space Center!

Special thank you to Dr. Luther Baker for earning a Pflugerville Education Foundation Grant to pay for registration for all of our students, and also receiving a donation for 2 charter buses! This allowed us to provide the trip free of charge to all participating students.

The goal of this trip, and many more to come, is to help inspire students to see the world beyond Pflugerville, but more importantly, to see themselves in jobs and roles beyond what they already imagine.

So often, we hope that students will improve or learn to enjoy the subjects we teach in school however, I truly believe that experiences like this, where students see math and science in real life, are what help our students the most.

Whether it be working for NASA, or any of the other countless jobs that exist in our world, we must first show students the doors of opportunities before we can expect them to walk through them.

Thank You PHS Visual Arts Students!!!

Visual Arts has some exciting news to share with you!

National Art Honors Society (NAHS) has officially completed the mural in the SRO’s office! These students have been working around the clock for 3 months to bring the commission to life.

Designed by our own Senior and NAHS President Monique Perez, this mural was modeled after Officer Ivy! Throughout this project, students were able to gain first-hand experience in the rewards and challenges of working in Public Arts. This includes designing, collaborating, and adjusting to fit client needs, as well as material budgeting.

We hope this mural reminds our SRO’s how much PHS appreciates their hard work and dedication to the safety of our campus.

Students, please stop by and check out our students' work if you get a chance!

Congratulations - 2023-24 Pflugerville High School PALS:

I am honored to announce the 2023-2024 PALS.  This was a long process with many amazing applicants. 62 PHS students were chosen to be a part of the PALS program and I am excited to see them mentor and change lives next year.

    Congratulations - New EMT Certification!!

Please help me congratulate new EMT Ryan Villa!

Ryan passed the NREMT yesterday.  He plans to go to work for Pflugerville Fire in their Cadet program to get his fire certification and eventually Paramedic.

This is all possible through the PfISD Fire/EMT Academy CTE program offered to all interested students! If you are an underclassman, and interested in this as well, please reach out to your counselor for more info.

We are BEYOND proud of you Ryan.

A Word from the Parent Liaison:

    Meaningful Family Engagement

Family engagement is essential in promoting healthy physical, cognitive and social-emotional development, and academic achievement of students in Pflugerville High School. Research shows that when families are meaningfully and continuously engaged in their children’s learning and development, they can positively impact their child’s health, development, academic, and well-being outcomes into adulthood.

    Description of Family Engagement

Strong family engagement happens when families have a primary and meaningful role in all decision-making that impacts every student and their family. Meaningful family engagement is about improving outcomes for all students and families and happens at the home level and at the school level.

At the school level, family engagement is evident when families routinely engage as equal partners with PHS and Pflugerville ISD (PfISD) leaders through the Campus Academic Advisory Committee (CAAC) on campus in planning, designing, and evaluating services, programs and policies that impact the lives of PHS students and families served.

Family engagement also happens at the campus where PHS partners and a single family collaborate in making decisions that address their students’ unique strengths and needs and considers the family’s ideas of success. Meaningful family engagement requires that PfISD and PHS leaders model and champion family partnership anchored by mutual respect, shared authority, two-way communication, and a commitment to a common vision and shared goals to improve outcomes for every young person and their family.

Definition of “Family” in Family Engagement

Home and school serving systems broadly define “family” in family engagement as including parents and other adult caregivers, acknowledging today’s varied family units and their needs for extended support. For example, early childhood education and juvenile justice programming describe family engagement as including biological, adoptive, and foster parents; grandparents; legal and informal guardians; and adult siblings.

Some agencies have broadened this definition of family to include related and non-related members. As an example, transition-aged and foster youth work with their providers to identify and name their personal family system that includes peers, mentors, and service providers who they trust and can count on for support. Key service sectors that are implementing family engagement plans and strategies to increase and improve the engagement of families in their systems and services include education, child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health, and primary health care providers.

Disregarding Safety Protocols = Not Cool…This Has to Stop:

Students. I love you very much, but I need you to know that I am frustrated. I feel like I am dealing with an issue that we as a high school should NOT be dealing with, especially in these times, and especially in April since our expectations haven't changed all year.

Thus, I am writing to you today because I want to ensure that all of the students understand (and parents can help me communicate) that it is NOT okay for students to open exterior doors for other students to enter.

As a reminder, we have posted information on EVERY exterior door since day 1, warning that they are monitored by cameras. They also state that there are consequences for letting anyone, even an adult/staff member into the building through this door.

This unsafe action requires two people. So I want to speak to both. Don't be the person in the picture below (random Google picture not a student) peaking in the door from the outside hoping someone will walk by and let you in. Also, don’t text your friend to meet you at the door to let you in. This is not okay.

The second person involved is the one in class/the building. I know you want to be nice when you see someone you know or who looks like a student when you are walking by a door and it can be hard to see them and not open it. I am telling you to do that!

You also have a responsibility as you leave the building to ensure the door closes behind you without anyone entering. If you are leaving for lunch, or an off period, and you notice someone waiting outside the door… use another one and alert an adult. We are monitoring our hallways and doors all day long to keep you safe.

Finally, ALL individuals who do not have staff badge access need to enter the building through our front doors. We do this because those doors are constantly monitored and can ensure that only authorized people and PHS students come into the building.

Your safety, especially with the events we all hear about in the news, is my NUMBER 1 priority and I am so tired of talking to good kids about this really bad decision. It isn't fair to the rest of us.

Just know, we will continue to call parents and give consequences for violating this safety expectation.

    SAT Scores are Posted:

SAT scores from the March 1st, 2023 School-Day administration have been posted!

All students who tested may access their scores by logging in to their online score report on the college board website.

If you do not know your password, then please utilize the "Forgot Password?" option to reset your password and receive access. If you are still having issues accessing scores, then contact college board at 866-630-9305.

    Bring Your Computer/Chromebook for Testing:

Students -- as you know, testing season is upon us – that means it’s time to dust off your Chromebook if you haven’t used it in a while, make sure it works, and FIND YOUR CHARGER! If you don’t already use yours on a daily basis, please start bringing those with you to campus and turning them on at some point during the day to ensure all of your software is up to date before the testing day!

Also, you WILL need your Chromebook if you are testing English I next Wednesday or English II next Thursday.

What Parents Should Know about ADHD

By Dianna R. Mullet and Dr. Anne N. Rinn

Does your gifted child challenge authority, show inattention, wander off-task, and demonstrate unusual amounts of high energy?

These traits and characteristics are often signs of giftedness, but are also symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Gifted traits and ADHD can look similar, so it’s important for parents to be aware that both misdiagnosis and dual diagnosis are possible in gifted children.

Does My Gifted Child Have ADHD?

Some gifted children suffer from ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child’s functioning.

For a diagnosis of ADHD,child under the age of 17 must display at least six symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity/impulsivity in at least two different settings (school and home, for example), and those symptoms must interfere with the child’s normal functioning.

The severity of ADHD varies among children:

    • Some children display primarily inattention, which can appear as an inability to remember verbal instructions or to focus on routine tasks.

    • Other children display hyperactive or impulsive behaviors such as trouble staying seated or talking out of turn.

    • Some children may display both types of symptoms.

    • Symptoms may appear different in different children.

    • Some children are mildly affected while others have severe symptoms.

Gifted children without ADHD can also demonstrate high levels of activity or inattention, but the problems tend to be specific only to certain situations (for example, a particular subject or class that lacks stimulation or challenge).

In school, teachers are often the first point of referral for special programming, yet the overlapping characteristics of giftedness and ADHD can make it difficult to correctly refer a child. Research suggests that when a child presents characteristics that span both giftedness and ADHD, teachers and counselors are more likely to identify a disability than giftedness.

Therefore, in order to avoid a misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis, it’s important to receive a comprehensive evaluation by a trained professional experienced in working with gifted children.

The evaluation includes tests of intelligence, achievement, and cognitive processing; interviews with teachers, parents, and the child; observation; and developmental history. Supporting Your Gifted Child with ADHD If your gifted child is diagnosed with ADHD, it’s important to provide the appropriate supports necessary for them to succeed.

In addition to ensuring appropriate medical treatment, parents have an important role in helping their ADHD gifted child succeed with educational accommodations, behavioral strategies, and opportunities to apply their strengths.

    Greetings Panthers,

Before we start with our typical celebrations and exciting news, I must share with you a recent loss at PHS.

One of our beloved Special Education teachers, Mrs. Erin Aniol passed away last week.

    Obituary of Erin Michelle Aniol

Mrs. Aniol passed away on March 26th, 2023.

Mrs. Aniol joined Pflugerville High School in 2021-22 and instantly made her presence felt with her warm personality, gentle spirit, and compassion for her students. She taught resource math last year and worked in our communication (life skills/essential academics) classroom this year.

Her students loved her because she would always go out of her way to make sure they were taken care of. That is just who she was, no matter the circumstance. Whether it was her friends, co-workers, or family members, she would always go out of her way.

Mrs. Aniol was an outgoing and kind-hearted person and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

This loss is an opportunity for me to share our systems and processes anytime we suffer a loss on our campus whether it be a student or staff member.

    1. Our first step is always to have an administrator confirm the incident (we would never want to act/communicate on misinformation).

    2. We notify our counselors and activate our crisis response team which involves district and campus staff. We also identify a location (typically the library) to serve as a safe place to console students/staff in need of a quiet place to process once we begin to communicate.

    3. We work to identify those who work/learn closest to the individual. If it is a student, that would be their teachers and their classmates. For a staff member, it would be other staff on their immediate team and their classes of students.

    4. An administrator finds the next available time to meet face-to-face with the affected adults. That is typically a before/after school meeting to share the news.

    5. We gather the entire faculty in a staff meeting so that everyone is aware of and understands our communication plan moving forward.

    6. We begin to communicate with the students. Our amazing counselors and social worker go into each class that the individual had/taught and share the news and provide opportunities and outlets for safe places to grieve if anyone feels they need to.

    7. We communicate the loss via email or the principal's blog.

A few important notes throughout this process are that our safe place with our crisis response team is always communicated to students and staff. We want everyone to understand that grieving looks different for everyone and it is perfectly okay to want to go to a quiet and separate place. Also, it is important to note that this process is also heavily dependent on the wishes of the family. In some situations, families are more private and ask that we not share any/much information, which we respect.

I am sorry to start the blog with this heavy of a topic, but as a PHS family, it is important that we communicate the good news and the hard news and that everyone understands how that information is decimated and why.

This is also a good time to remind everyone that if they are feeling sad, disconnected, alone, or any other emotion that is impacting their learning, please see any one of our counselors for help and support. We also have our anonymous alert system found on the PfISD website if you would like to recommend to us someone we should check on. Please help us, help everyone.

    Reminder - Drive Safely:

As I am sure many of you are aware based on the traffic it caused, there was a terrible wreck on Wednesday, 4/5/23. Thankfully, it did not involve any PHS students or staff, but I heard the ambulance drive by and my heart sank in fear until I got more information.

Thankfully, from what I have heard, everyone is doing “fine” which is a miracle.

Thus, the father in me wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of our student drivers to please be cautious and careful on the roads.

Limit all distractions. No text message or thing you are looking at on your phone is worth the risk of an accident.

Please also make sure you are driving the speed limit, they are in place for a reason. If you are a senior leaving for lunch, it is important that you manage your time and make it back to campus on time, but it is more important that you drive safely, even if it means you will be late. Also, don’t forget to come back through the front entrance, don’t text a friend to open a side door. That is a major safety concern and will result in consequences for both of you.

[okay, the dad lecture over]. In closing, we care about you, and this event is a good reminder to all of us to not take anything for granted and to always pay attention when driving.

Congratulations - PHS Re-Validated as an AVID National Demonstration Campus:

In 2018 Pflugerville High School received the prestigious honor of being a recognized AVID National Demonstration School.

On Thursday, April 5th, 2023, Pflugerville High School earned a prestigious Re-Validation of our National Demonstration Status!

AVID National Demonstration Schools are exemplary models of the AVID College Readiness System.

Demonstration Schools undergo a rigorous validation process and are required to be revalidated every few years to ensure high levels of implementation, with quality and fidelity to AVID strategies schoolwide.

Schools and districts interested in implementing AVID, or expanding AVID in their districts or at their schools, can arrange to visit a National Demonstration School and experience a highly successful AVID System in action. At an AVID National Demonstration School, visitors can observe:

    • AVID as a schoolwide approach to college readiness

    • Evidence of student achievement schoolwide

    • Strong and committed leadership to college readiness for all students at both school and district levels

    • A center of learning for AVID best practices schoolwide

    • A committed team of trained AVID educators dedicated to a successful implementation of the AVID College Readiness System for all students

    • Models for excellent inquiry-based AVID tutorials - both in the AVID Elective and, in some schools, selected content classrooms

    • A showplace of the commitment and synergy that a strong AVID System creates for schoolwide college readiness

    Happy National Assistant Principals Week:

The true heroes of ensuring that an 1850 student Title 1 high school functions at a high level are the assistant principals running behind the scenes.

This is a very thankless role that has to balance and navigate difficult decisions and conversations. They are often the first to process challenges facing students, parents, and teachers. Yet, they do it with grace and poise.

Please help me thank my amazing team (feel free to email them - it would make their whole year):

    Happy National School Librarian’s Day:

Tuesday, April 4th was officially National School Librarians Day. Please help me thank our one and only librarian Ms. Laura Owen. She has some pretty impressive stats coming up later in this blog that will illustrate just how valuable and amazing she is to our campus!

    Awesome PHS Art Project:

PHS’s National Art Honor Society participated in The Memory Project this year, producing over 25 portraits of children from India. The Memory Project is a non-profit organization that works with art students in the US to bring joy to children around the globe who live in difficult situations. In years past, we have created portraits of children in Nigeria, Syria, and now India. Along with the portraits, our artists also send a donation that is paid for by the fall art sale held by members of the National Art Honor Society each year.

The Memory Project sends a video after each group of portraits is delivered to the children to show how big of an impact this small act of kindness can have on someone a world away. Please take some time to watch the video, you won’t regret it! You may not see all of our portraits in the video, so I have attached the portraits that were mailed off a few weeks ago. Enjoy!

    https://vimeo.com/memoryproject/india2023

We couldn’t have completed the portraits without the support of our faculty and district, thanks so much!

Good Evening PHS Class of 2023 & Families –

The College & Career Center is excited to once again offer the Senior Poster to our graduates. These posters will be handed out during diploma pick up for you to keep and will look similar to the ones you see in the attached picture. You may see another example in the College & Career Center.

We are hoping every member of the Class of 2023 will choose to receive a free poster, because it will allow us to celebrate you and motivate the Class of 2024 with all of your plans.

We are able to make a poster for you regardless of your plans after high school. Whether you are joining the Workforce, Military, Trade School, College, etc…we want to celebrate you!

If you are still unsure of your plans, that is ok! We can change your poster in May with your updated plans.

Pictures will be taken the last week of April, so you must complete the form below by April 19th, 2023.

    Greetings Panthers,

Happy Friday! We are officially in the final 9 weeks of the school year.

That means grades, attendance, make-up hours, credit recovery, and so many more things become critical components of success, and for our seniors' graduation!

Parents, PLEEEEEASE be checking your child’s skyward. If you notice anything that seems strange (random absences or tardies, low grades, etc.) please call us so we can help determine what is going on… we are finding more and more cases of situations where students are… bending the truth… about what is happening and reflecting in skyward.

Speaking of reaching out, we will be starting a new software program called “SCHOOL STATUS” very soon. The program has many features, but the one we are most excited about is the texting feature. Similar to when we were virtual and could text using Google Voice we will once again be able to call, text, and email!

    Stay tuned for more info!

Action Item: Class of 2023 - Important Information

It’s hard to believe that in just a little over 2 months, your student will be walking the stage at graduation!!  Here are a few “checkboxes” that need to be taken care of in order to make that journey to the stage.

April 13:  Cap, Gown & Tassel distribution

Pre-ordered graduation cap/gown distribution is scheduled for Thursday, April 13th during all 3 lunches.

May 6:  Senior Contract submission deadline

All seniors must submit a Senior Contract to participate in the graduation ceremonies.  You and your senior can click HERE to view the contract.  The contract can be submitted electronically using the Google Form in the above link OR you can turn in a printed/signed copy to the front office.   STUDENTS:  YOU MUST USE YOUR PFISD EMAIL ADDRESS/ACCOUNT TO ACCESS THE ELECTRONIC CONTRACT.

    Upcoming:  Book fines/Fees/Hours

You or your student should receive notification from the bookkeeper and/or librarian if your student has outstanding fees/fines.  As a reminder, all obligations will need to be fulfilled prior to the senior receiving their diploma and final transcript.  Notification emails are currently being sent out by the attendance office for any student who may owe hours.

Please continue to watch the website for additional news/updates/information regarding your senior.  There will be many updates and announcements that I would hate for you all to miss!  Click HERE for the link to the Class of 2023 page for updates and reminders.

Action Item - Write a “Shout Out” to a PHS Staff Member (please):

We love our PfISD staff members and we know our parents do too! We want to provide an opportunity for our parents to publicly recognize and thank our staff members who serve our students, staff, and the community. We have created a Google Form to provide information directly to us to share with our staff as a whole and let you see the difference you are making in a student's life every single day. Please click here for the Google Form.

These Shout Outs will be included in upcoming issues of the Parent and Staff Newsletters. If a Shout Out directly references a student, we will not include the guardian name to protect the child's anonymity. If you are recognized in an anonymous Shout Out and want to learn the parent's name, please contact Tamra Spence at tamra.spence@pfisd.net.

Congratulations - Angelina Cao - Silent Service Award:

Senior Angelina Cao was recognized this week for her outstanding commitment to leadership and community service. She plays a vital role in countless clubs and organizations on our campus and in our community.

This award includes a beautiful plaque inscribed with her name and award along with an unrestricted $500 check, all provided by the Jim Marsh Foundation.

Congratulations - Partnership with Dell Professionals:

The following PHS students applied and were hired for the Dell IGNITE high school internship program.

    • Tirtha Gautam

    • Jenna Pham

    • Nicolas Rodriguez

    • Bethany Tran

Students will work alongside Dell professionals during a paid internship from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until May. They must provide their own transportation to the Dell Parmer Lane campus. The students participated in orientation yesterday and begin the internship experience today.

Congratulations - Lone Star Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical:

Last week, Autumn Hendrickson (At-Risk Facilitator at Pflugerville High School) took six PFISD seniors (PHS & WHS), Angel Apodaca, Rolando Tijerina, Miguel Villanueva, Jabari Moore, Brandon Albert, and Kyler Heath to complete the Lonestar Construction Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical training over spring break.

Students learned basic electrical theory and participated in hands-on training including wiring switches, GFCI receptacles, 3-way switches, and much more. Students applied the skills they learned by assembling and wiring a lamp with a light switch, outlets, and USB receptacles. Ms. Hendrickson graciously gave up her entire spring break for the 5-day program so that our students could learn more about what it means to be an electrician and help our students take the first step to becoming a Journeyman electrician.

The students will also complete their OSHA 10 certification.

Ms. Hendrickson worked tirelessly before the event to bring this opportunity to our students. Since the beginning of the year, she worked with Haley Honey (WHS College & Career Advisor), Local Union 520, Lone Star Construction Trades Program, Goodwill Central Texas, and others to secure funding for our students. This allowed every student to receive the $2,200 training completely free.

    Congratulations - Powerlifting Team:

This past weekend the Women’s Powerlifting Team competed in the State Powerlifting meet held in Frisco, TX.

Congratulations to Ava Roberts for placing 4th in her weight class and bringing home a medal. Thank you for representing Pflugerville High School! We are proud of you and look forward to next season!

    Congratulations - PHS Choir:

Right before spring break, PHS Choir competed in the UIL Concert and Sight Reading evaluation.  Our Tenor Bass Choir was awarded Sweepstakes for superior (best) ratings in both their concert and sight reading performances, and our Varsity mixed choir Panther Chorale was also awarded superior ratings for their sight reading performance. Recordings of all of our choir concert performances can be found here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18BLd8vBAIEbuG6lzZ3qJz0E8nGhEGtVg?usp=sharing

Mark Your Calendar - Greater Pflugerville Job Fair:

Proposed changes to Texas A-F Accountability Ratings:

The Texas Education Agency has announced expected significant changes to the A–F accountability process that will begin to impact students, schools, and districts in 2023. We anticipate these changes to the Accountability system will cause a decrease in ratings for schools and districts across the state. While the changes are still preliminary, districts across the state are preparing staff and the community for the changes, which are expected to be finalized in the summer 2023.

Changes to the system center around:

    • STAAR testing

    • College, Career and Military Readiness Evaluation

    • Closing the Gap

    • District Ratings

Click here to learn more about the Accountability System in Texas and what changes will go into effect.

    A Word from the Library:

St. Jude’s Read-a-thon  St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital is doing a Facebook Charity drive during April.  You pledge to read 30 minutes a day, and people donate to St. Jude’s (through a post you put on your FB page).  If your family would like to participate, find out more here. St. Jude’s Read-a-thon

A Word from No Place for Hate:

March is Women’s History Month.  No Place 4 Hate is celebrating the empowering ability of language and actions to lift women up.  All organizations are encouraged to also spread Serena Williams’ message: “We’re strongest when we cheer each other on.”

April is Diversity Month.  We are bringing back Tie-Dye to Unify.  Until March 31, we will be selling White cotton NP4H PHS tshirts for $10.  In  April (exact date TBD), students and staff can visit the courtyard during all lunches to tie-dye their shirt.  (You can have it done for you for a donation).  Volunteers from other organizations are invited to help.  See Mrs. Owen in the library for more information.  NP4H Webstore and cash/check options.

IMPORTANT - Fentanyl Lessons & Opt Out Form

You may have heard that a nearby district, Hays ISD, has had multiple student deaths this year caused by Fentanyl. Although Hays is located on the other side of Austin, being connected by interstate 35 means if it is there, it is probably here too.

Pflugerville ISD has put together 4 mini lessons on the dangers of Fentanyl that students will hear in their social studies classes (or ELA for 11th graders) after spring break.

These lessons/videos are powerful and could save a life. We have provided a copy of the link to all four lessons for you to preview if you would like. Additionally, below is an opt out form if you would like for your child to go to the library or another classroom during these 15-20 minute mini lessons.
