I have some great news- we anticipate having a crossing guard starting mid-week next week!  Thank you to everyone for their patience and extra care of students while we were without permanent help. 

As a reminder, there is no school for students on Monday, February 20th.  Dr. Killian's recent newsletter confirmed that we will not need to schedule extra days to make up for the lost 4 days during the ice storm.  We have additional minutes that can compensate and we are requesting a TEA waiver for the remaining time.

Congratulations are in order to our UIL team and the individual competitors, as well as our basketball players who completed a successful season!  You represented KLMS well and we are proud of your commitment, efforts, and results!

I want to wish good luck to students who are trying out for the track/field team as well as cheerleading in the upcoming weeks.

We have three weeks until Spring Break - the year has definitely flown by!  These are the last 3 weeks of the grading cycle, which officially ends on March 10th.

We are almost finished taking the STAAR Interim tests; this was practice for the STAAR tests in April/May so students know the processes and testing expectations at KLMS.  They were also able to see the new STAAR questions which will help them prepare.  The 8th graders have Science and Social Studies left on Tuesday, January 31st and then we will not STAAR test again until April.  

Every year, we are required to publicly present our school performance and ratings.  In September, I hosted a Zoom meeting for parents to present the KLMS School Report Card and the Campus Improvement Plan; that information was posted on the website (click here to view).

There is a similar report, called the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) that must also be publicly presented. The TAPR report is more specific than our report card. It includes information about the performance of students in various accountability groupings, it also shows performance by test subject.  In addition to more specific testing performance, it includes attendance and drop out rates, graduation programs, enrollment information, program participation rates, and demographic information about the staff.  I will post the presentation online and there will be a copy of the report in the main office of KLMS.  If you would like us to make a copy of the report, just call the front office at 512-594-2800 and we can send a copy home with your student (the report is 27 pages).

I am going to publically present the information tomorrow evening, Monday, January 30th, during our 5th grade parents' night.  All parents are welcome to attend this presentation at 6:30 and we will conclude the presentation no later than 7:00pm.  If there is a need for a second presentation, we will schedule and communicate that to all parents.  If you would like to view the TAPR report, click here and it will take you to the online report provided by TEA.

Welcome back...  we are so excited to see everyone tomorrow!  Students will have a normal schedule (starting in 1st period), it is not like the first day of the fall semester when they started with Catapult.  There are several events in January, mostly for students coming to KLMS or going to high school.  Here are some upcoming events I want to highlight:

January 4 - Start of the spring semester, students have a normal bell schedule.

January 10 - PTO meeting at 6:30pm in the library.

January 12 - 8th grade parent night at 6:00pm in the cafeteria (the presentation is most appropriate for parents new to high school or are not familiar with graduation plans and endorsements).

January 18 - Reading Interim test for 7th and 8th grade students during school.

January 19 - Reading Interim test for 6th grade students during school.

January 19 - 8th grade invasion to HHS (this is during school and all 8th grade students participate).

January 24 - Math Interim test for 7th and 8th grade students during school.

January 25 - Math Interim test for 6th grade students during school.  

January 26 - 5th grade visit to KLMS (this is during school when the 5th graders will come to KLMS).

January 30 - 5th grade parent night at 6:00pm in the cafeteria (the presentation is most appropriate for parents new to middle school or who have questions about electives/selecting advanced classes).  

January 31 - Science and Social Studies Interim tests for 8th graders.

February 10 - Valentine's Dance

February 14 - Carnations for sale at school.

February 15, 16, 17 - 8th grade parent meetings during school (parents will receive notice of specific time and date later).

February 17 - Parent meeting for any 6th or 7th grader interested in trying out for the 2023-24 Cheerleading Squad (including mascots).

Later this week, I will post website pages with information about testing (interim and STAAR) and pages specific to 5th and 8th grade transition events.  I will send those in a separate blog once all of the information has been updated.

We have a big day planned for tomorrow, December 16th.  These past two weeks there have been several student performances, special projects, games, and events which have been wonderful to watch. The students have done an amazing job!  Before break starts, I recommend having your student write their passwords and locker combinations someplace safe as this will help when they return in January.

December 16th (tomorrow) is the last day of the semester and the students are released at 12:45.  Here are some tips for navigating tomorrow:

• TRANSPORTATION: Busses will run at their normal times in the morning, and will run their regular afternoon routes starting at 12:45.
• SCHEDULE: The students will go to periods 2, 4, and 6 and then finish the day/have lunch in clubs.
• ACTIVITIES: Students may have up to 2 wristbands when they come home tonight: red if they are going to Joe's Cafe and blue/green if they are going to watch or play in the dodgeball tournament.  Weather permitting, all students will have an outdoor recess time to play, hang out with friends, buy candy canes or get their faces painted (fee applies).
• SUPPLIES: Unless a teacher has specifically told students they need their Chromebook or other school supplies, they do not need to bring their instructional supplies.
• LUNCH: Sack lunches will be available in the cafeteria for purchase; all students will be eating in their clubs at the end of the day.  Please do not send lunches to school that require a microwave because students will not be in the cafeteria.
• STUDENT PICK-UP: If you will need to pick up your student prior to the 12:45 bell, please allow for extra time.  Students will not be in their regular classrooms and may be at a special event and we will not have office aides, so getting students from class will take longer.  If you know when you are coming, please consider sending a note with your student to be released to the office at a specific time.  This is not a standard procedure, but given the nature of our schedule, we believe this will help with the efficiency of locating students and helping parents stay on their intended schedule.
• BOOK FAIR: The Book Fair will be open to students tomorrow; they must have money in order to be excused from their class to go to the Book Fair.

Chúng tôi có một ngày trọng đại được lên kế hoạch cho ngày mai, ngày 16 tháng 12. Hai tuần vừa qua đã có một số buổi biểu diễn của học sinh, các dự án đặc biệt, trò chơi và sự kiện rất thú vị để xem. Các sinh viên đã làm một công việc tuyệt vời! Trước khi kỳ nghỉ bắt đầu, tôi khuyên học sinh của bạn nên viết mật khẩu và tổ hợp tủ khóa của chúng ở một nơi an toàn vì điều này sẽ hữu ích khi chúng trở lại vào tháng Giêng.

Ngày 16 tháng 12 (ngày mai) là ngày cuối cùng của học kỳ và học sinh được ra về lúc 12:45. Dưới đây là một số mẹo để điều hướng vào ngày mai:

VẬN CHUYỂN: Xe buýt sẽ chạy vào giờ bình thường vào buổi sáng và sẽ chạy các tuyến buổi chiều thông thường bắt đầu từ 12:45.
LỊCH TRÌNH: Học sinh sẽ học tiết 2, 4, 6 và kết thúc ngày học/ăn trưa tại câu lạc bộ.
HOẠT ĐỘNG: Học sinh có thể có tối đa 2 vòng đeo tay khi về nhà tối nay: màu đỏ nếu các em sẽ đến Joe's Cafe và màu xanh dương/xanh lá cây nếu các em định xem hoặc chơi trong giải bóng ném. Nếu thời tiết cho phép, tất cả học sinh sẽ có thời gian giải lao ngoài trời để chơi, đi chơi với bạn bè, mua kẹo hoặc vẽ mặt (có tính phí).
ĐỒ DÙNG: Trừ khi giáo viên đã nói cụ thể với học sinh rằng họ cần Chromebook hoặc các đồ dùng học tập khác, còn không thì các em không cần mang theo đồ dùng học tập.
BỮA TRƯA: Bữa trưa đóng gói sẽ có sẵn trong căng tin để mua; tất cả học sinh sẽ ăn trong câu lạc bộ của họ vào cuối ngày. Vui lòng không gửi bữa trưa đến trường cần lò vi sóng vì học sinh sẽ không ở trong căng tin.
ĐÓN HỌC SINH: Nếu bạn cần đón học sinh của mình trước chuông 12:45, vui lòng cho phép thêm thời gian. Học sinh sẽ không ở trong lớp học thông thường của mình và có thể tham dự một sự kiện đặc biệt và chúng tôi sẽ không có trợ lý văn phòng, vì vậy việc đưa học sinh ra khỏi lớp sẽ mất nhiều thời gian hơn. Nếu bạn biết khi nào bạn sẽ đến, vui lòng cân nhắc việc gửi một ghi chú cùng với học sinh của bạn để được đưa đến văn phòng vào một thời điểm cụ thể. 2023-24 Planning

I know you might not be ready to plan next year, but it is coming fast!  In January there are several transition events for the 8th graders and incoming 6th graders.  In January there are several transition events for the 8th graders and incoming 6th graders.  All students will have choice sheets to complete in January/February; the counselors will be meeting with students during the school day to give them their choice sheets and explain the process/options. 

8th grade Events

• Jan. 12th at 6:00p is a Parent Night at KLMS.  We will review graduation plans, pathways, processes for parents.  Students are welcome to attend but the intended audience is for parents; it will be especially helpful for new HS parents or parents that have not had a high school student for a while.
• Jan. 19th from ~9:00am - 2:00pm is the 8th Grade Invasion, which is when the 8th graders visit Hendrickson High School to prepare for selecting their courses;  parents do not attend this event.
• Jan. 19th from 6:00p - 8:00p is the HHS Course Fair for parents and students to visit the school, learn about course selection, and learn more about the pathways and elective choices.
• Ms. Vigil will with students during class to enter information in SchoolLinks.
• February 15th - 17th are the 8th grade parent meetings.  Parents will receive an assigned time to meet with a HHS counselor to verify course selections; these are brief 15 minute meetings that generally during your student's science class.  That information will be sent in February.
• August 2023 -   Take Flight! freshman orientation (registration and fee required).  Specifics will be announced at a later date.

Incoming 6th Grade Events

• Jan. 26th the 5th graders will come to KLMS during the day from 9:00-11:00 to learn more about the school and course selection.  They will not be eating lunch at KLMS; questions are best directed to your student's home campus.
• Jan. 30th from 6:00p-8:00p will be 5th grade parent night at KLMS.  We will host new parents to explain choice selection and showcase electives.  Students are welcome to attend but the intended audience is parents.
• August 2023 will be the 6th grade camp (registration and fee required).  This is a student event to orient students to KLMS and meet new people!  We will cover the daily routines and processes at KLMS.  This is a PTO hosted event and serves as their major fundraiser.  Specifics will be announced at a later date.  

 

STAAR 2023

We will be taking the STAAR Interim tests in January and the STAAR tests in April/May.  Please visit this page to learn more about the dates, expectations, and preparation.  For your convenience, I have included the schedule below.  This information is also available by going to the KLMS homepage and clicking on the article titled "2023 STAAR Information" located just below the rotating banner.  This information is available in English, en español, and bằng tiếng Việt.

While accelerated math students might not take the STAAR test of their enrolled grade level, they will test on their grade level day.  Therefore, use the grade level of your student to determine their testing days and not the test they will take.

It has been a fun, and fast, start to the school year.  Truthfully, it's a little surreal that we are already in November!  The students have done a great job adjusting; while for the adults it feels like we are back to doing things the way we used - for the students, they feel like all new systems.  Here are some lessons we've learned, observations, and feedback for parents.

Lockers.  Turns out the hardest part of lockers hasn't been learning how to open a combination lock; the hardest part has been learning how to use the locker.  When we were in the midst of COVID-strict protocols and not sharing materials or using lockers, students had to carry everything with them and, as a result, some are struggling to learn how to organize their materials.  This skill is part of their executive functioning, the system in the brain that impacts their time management and organization.  It may sound strange to say they don't know how to use lockers, but many students have struggled to figure out what they should take to class and what should stay in their locker.  For example, I still see some students carrying their lunch with them at all times - even if they pass their locker on the way to the cafeteria.  Or carrying their science notebook throughout the day instead of only for science class.  Ask your student what they put in their locker, what they take to class, when they stop at the locker, etc. to see where your student is on the learning curve.  Another thing I see is students trying to fit everything that was in the backpack into their drawstring bag instead of using the drawstring bag to only carry items immediately needed.  If your student is wearing out their drawstring bags, this might be why.  

Hall and Crowd Etiquette.  In the hallways, we ask the students to walk on the right side- this helps to prevent accidental collisions and keeps traffic flowing.  Students are expected to stand in line while waiting in the cafeteria and at other events (especially at Haunted Hallways).  For the most part, we see students reaching that expectation.  However, it has been interesting that several students express that they believe that joining a friend in line is not "line jumping".  Also, we are redirecting students to be more mindful of the conversations they have (including bad language and derogatory words) while in the hallway, as several of the conversations are not appropriate for the time or place they are occurring.  Please help us by reinforcing the need to be mindful of your surroundings when talking.

ID Badges.  Overall, we experience great compliance with wearing ID badges.  Some students keep them in their lockers, others keep them in their backpack, and there are a plethora of other systems.  You can change the lanyward or put the ID in a protective pouch if desired.  We do recommend that if students are walking home, they should hide their ID so it is not visible on their walk home.

Lunches.  The students can now scan their ID at the register instead of typing in their ID number.  Remember that breakfast is free for all students, but lunches are only free/reduced for students that qualify for assistance.  Students are at assigned tables, but they had the option to select the students they are seated with.

Over-the-Counter Medication.  The flu and allergy season are hitting us hard; several teachers and students are out for many days trying to recover.  As a result, we are seeing more students coming to school with OTC medication (allergy pills, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc) to take during the school day.  Please remember that students should not self-carry medication.  If you would like medication available to your student during the day (without having to come to school), please connect with the school nurse to follow proper procedures.  School Nurse: Hanna West, email hanna.west@pfisd.net, 594-2835.

Student Email.  More and more communication is being sent electronically via email to students and several do not check email regularly.  Ask your students when they check their email; as they grow older, this skill/habit will be important to develop.  If they are unsure, you can help practice this skill by emailing back-and-forth with your student.

Gifted and Talented (GT) Nominations.  The deadline for accepting parent nominations for GT testing is extended to December 1st.  If your student exhibits high performance capabilities in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area, you should review the GT information and consider referring them for testing.  You can learn more on the PfISD GT website (click here).  You can also go directly to the Secondary Parent Information slide deck (click here).  If you want to refer your student, contact their grade level counselor (click here for contact info).

Upcoming events and the end of semester.   Here are some upcoming events and things to know:

• Gifted and Talented Parent Nominations due by December 1st.  See above for details.
• One Act Play public performance - Friday, November 18 @ 8:00pm in the cafeteria.  The One Act Play competition is Saturday, November 19th.
• Basketball starts November 16th.  Games will typically be Wednesday (7th grade) and Thursday (8th grade); however, please refer to the schedule for specifics.  Games start at 5:30.
• Picture retakes November 17th.
• Thanksgiving Break, NO SCHOOL Nov. 21-25
• Musical auditions kick off with a parents' meeting on November 28th; student auditions start November 29th after school.
• Band Concerts are December 6th and 13th.
• The Choir/Dance show is at KLMS on November 8th
• The "Winter Wonderland" Winter Dance was moved to December 9th.  Doors open at 6:00 for 6th grade and 7:30 for 7th and 8th grade; tickets will be sold during lunches on Thursday and Friday for $3 and at the door for $5.  
• The Scholastic Book Fair is December 12th - 16th.
• Kickstart Kids winter belt ceremony is Monday, December 12th.
• December 16th is early release and the start of a new annual event!  Our first Fall Knight Out will be December 16th.
• January 4th, 2023 is the first day of the spring semester for students.

These last 2 weeks in October contain 2 major events that are often synonymous with themed outfits.

The first is Red Ribbon Week, which is always recognized around this time of year.  Red Ribbon Week is designed to raise awareness and remind people about the dangers of drug-use and the drug trade; it is recognized throughout the United States.  If you are unfamiliar with Red Ribbon Week, click here to read more.  One popular way for schools to participate in Red Ribbon Week is to have dress-up/ themed outfits for each day.  

The themes for KLMS next week are:

• Monday – “Be Trustworthy “- Friends help friends STAY drug free. Match your friends and dress alike.
• Tuesday – “Support Cancer Research” - Wear pink to show your support for cancer awareness.
• Wednesday– “College Not Drugs!”- Wear your favorite college t-shirt to show you are committed to choosing education.
• Thursday– “Team Up Against Drugs!”- Wear your favorite team t-shirt to show you are committed to working as a TEAM.
• Friday– “Kelly Lane Spirit” – Support all of our teams at Kelly Lane by wearing your favorite Kelly Lane shirt! Go Knights!

All themed outfits must still meet dress code expectations, unless the theme is specifically titled for an item not included in the dress code.  For example, if we had "PJ Day", students could wear PJ pants to school.  However, they should not wear PJ pants any other day... even if they fit the theme of a dress-up day.

The next popular event in October for themed outfits is Halloween.  Students may dress in a Halloween spirit - such as wearing a headband with animal ears or a Halloween-themed shirt.  Students may not wear costumes or face masks, carry costume props, or bring excessive amounts of candy to hand out to other students.  There is definitely some subjectivity for these situations - how much of a distraction results from student choices, the time required for staff to address those choices, and adherence to the expectation of following the 3 Bs. 

While many people do celebrate Halloween... not all families celebrate it, not all students enjoy scary things, not all great costume ideas need to be showcased at school.  With this in mind, please limit the amount of candy your student brings to school on November 1st.

Congratulations on making it through the first quarter of the school year!  The rest of the semester will fly by and before you know it, we will be talking about classes for next year!

For Parents...

• Ensemble Therapy, in partnership with PfISD Parent & Family Engagement, is presenting "Demystifying and Navigating School Programs" on November 8th from 12:00-1:00 PM.  Click here for the information flyer and registration link
• We would like to have a high completion rate for the National School Lunch applications -  many families have had a change in financial status and/or resources and may qualify for free or reduced lunches.  Please consider completing the application even if you do not think you qualify, it will help increase our completion rates and monitor our goal to reach all families.  To complete the application, go to your Skyward account and complete the form.  We have noticed that completing forms through Skyward requires a computer - several parents have not been able to complete forms when accessing Skyward on a phone.

For Students...

• Austin Community College and Verizon Innovative Learning are hosting a free STEM workshop for MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS on November 5th, from 9am - 12p at the ACC Highland Campus.  Click here for more information, program contacts, or the RSVP link.
• Students can strengthen their skills in all core subjects through IXL.  This program allows them to practice all levels of all core subjects and can be accessed through the student Clever accounts.  Our first nine weeks IXL Leaderboard was for students and the number of questions answered correctly.  The top three students from each grade will receive a prize, courtesy of PTO.  Watch out for the next Leaderboard and see what you can win!  Students can also work on skills over school breaks if you need something for them to do!

Congratulations go out to all of our students that were recognized as Knight Pride recipients or KORT inductees at the spirit assembly - way to go!

Here are some upcoming events at KLMS:

• Football and Volleyball are in their final 2 weeks of the season...  cheer them on as they finish strong!  If you are coming to the game, remember that tickets must be purchased online but can be purchased ahead of time.  Also, don't forget your student ID.
• Haunted Hallways is October 28th, starting at 6:30pm - tickets are $2 per person for each stroll through the Haunted Hallway.  This is a fundraiser for the KLMS Theatre Department.
• Dia de Muertos recognition is November 1-3.  Submit a picture of a loved one to be honored as part of the KLMS Ofrenda, slides are needed by October 27th.  The links and information are in the student Google Classrooms.
• Veteran's Day Assembly is November 11th.  Veteran's of all branches are invited to be recognized (7th/8th grade is at 8:35 and 6th grade is at 9:30).  Please RSVP to Kristi.Henderson@pfisd.net.  Click for more information.
• Basketball starts the week of November 14th.
• The One Act Play public performance is November 18th at 8:00 in the KLMS cafeteria; the competition is November 19th.
• Thanksgiving Break is November 21 - 25.
• The Winter Dance has been moved to December 9th.  6th grade is 6:00-7:30 and 7th/8th grade is 7:30-9:00; tickets will go on sale the days prior to the dance during lunch.
• Band concerts are December 6th and December 13th.
• Dance/Choir show is December 8th.
• Kickstart Kids Fall Belt Ceremony is December 12th at 6:30 in the KLMS gym.
• Scholastic Book Fair is December 12th - 16th.
• The last day of the fall semester is December 16th; students will be released at 12:45.  Busses will run their normal routes starting at 12:45.
