Bio - Mr. Charlie Torres

Charlie Torres

Mr. Charlie Torres was elected to the Pflugerville Board of Trustees in 2024.

Charlie Torres was born in Aransas Pass, Texas, in December 1955 and grew up in Rockport, Texas. He graduated from Rockport-Fulton High School in 1974 and attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville until 1977. After receiving his third job offer from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1977, he decided to begin his career with the phone company. That same year, he married his wife, Carmen, and they have enjoyed 47 years of a wonderful marriage, raising four sons and celebrating eight grandchildren.

Charlie's career with SWBT/AT&T as a Customer Service Technician began in 1977 in Kenedy, Texas. He later transferred to Corpus Christi, where he spent the remainder of his AT&T career. After 20 years with the company, he was elected to serve CWA Local Union 6137 in Corpus Christi as Vice President, Treasurer, and eventually President, representing 1,400 employees of the SWBT/AT&T bargaining unit. In 2007, he was promoted to work in Kansas City, Missouri, for the CWA International Union and retired from AT&T after 32 years of service.

In his second career as an International Union Representative in Kansas City, Charlie represented union members in Missouri and Kansas in labor contract negotiations, labor relations grievances, and arbitration hearings. These bargaining units included print shops, a 911 center, and several phone companies, including AT&T. After spending 1 ½ years in Missouri and experiencing two very cold winters, he requested a transfer back to Texas. With his first grandchild living in Pflugerville, where his son had chosen the strongest school district in Central Texas, Charlie and his wife decided to move to Pflugerville to be closer to their granddaughter.

Charlie has a passion for public education and over 35 years of volunteer service in this field. He is deeply aware of the challenges that students and teachers face in education today. His 12 years as a school board trustee and Vice President at Gregory-Portland ISD have provided him with extensive experience in creating shared visions and developing measurable goals to improve student outcomes. Charlie is dedicated to raising awareness of public education challenges, collaborating on creative solutions, and fostering opportunities for all PfISD students. Through community input and a commitment to the district’s mission and goals, he remains a steadfast advocate for positive changes that benefit teachers, students, and administrators alike.
