AVID Program

  • AVID logoAt Park Crest, we are committed to providing our students with the tools, skills, and support they need to succeed academically and prepare for college and career opportunities. That's why we are proud to offer the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program.

AVID is a nationally recognized program designed to help students develop the necessary academic and personal skills to thrive in rigorous coursework and become college-ready. It is an elective course that serves students in the academic middle, with the potential and desire to attend college but may need extra support to achieve their goals.

The AVID program focuses on four main pillars:

    1. Academic Rigor: AVID students are challenged to take rigorous courses that prepare them for success in college and beyond. They learn critical thinking, problem-solving, and study skills that enhance their academic performance across all subjects.

    2. Writing: Strong writing skills are essential for success in college and beyond. AVID students receive targeted instruction and practice in writing, allowing them to express their ideas effectively and communicate their knowledge with confidence.

    3. Inquiry: AVID students develop critical inquiry skills, learning how to ask probing questions, think critically, and engage in meaningful discussions. They are encouraged to take an active role in their learning, promoting a deeper understanding of the material.

    4. Collaboration: Collaboration is a vital skill for success in college and the workplace. AVID students participate in collaborative activities, such as group projects and tutorials, where they learn to work effectively as a team, support each other, and embrace diverse perspectives.

In addition to classroom instruction, the AVID program provides students with academic support through tutorials, where they receive assistance from trained tutors and peers. This supportive environment encourages students to ask questions, seek help when needed, and develop a growth mindset.

Furthermore, AVID creates a college-going culture by exposing students to college and career exploration activities. Through field trips, guest speakers, and college visits, students gain exposure to various post-secondary options and learn about the steps necessary to pursue higher education.

The AVID program at Park Crest Middle School is dedicated to empowering students, fostering academic excellence, and preparing them for future success. We are proud of our AVID students' achievements and the supportive community that surrounds them.

If you believe that AVID is the right fit for your child or would like to learn more about our program, please reach out to our AVID Sponsor, Dana Haub, or the counseling department. We look forward to supporting your child's academic journey and helping them reach their full potential.
