    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

This past week, we hosted 260 of our pfuture 6th grade students from our four feeder elementary schools. For many of the staff at Pflugerville Middle School, this was our first opportunity to host 5th grade students in person and it definitely did not disappoint. The one thing that stood out to many of our staff members, was the courageous student leadership from our current students. Not only did our 8th grade student leaders demonstrate confidence in guided tours, so many of our 6th and 7th graders lead and modeled positive behavior through dance, band, choir, kickstart and other extracurricular programs. Thank you to our elective teachers, Coach Tomeka Falconer and our cheerleaders. My last kudos is to Ms. Soto and our counselors and social worker.  What a great job of planning, execution and making that day exciting for so many pfuture panthers. Awesome job!!

Character Strong - Social/Emotional Learning: Mondays During Advisory:

This week we are talking to our students about the power of influence and how it can have a positive/negative effect. We encourage you to watch this video with your child and reflect with some of these questions:

-How can an intentional act of kindness shift the course of someone else’s - and even your day?

-What can you intentionally do to create that positive effect?

5th Grade Parent Night Presentation - Monday (tomorrow) 6-7 pm in the PMS Cafeteria:

Parents, if you have a current 5th grade student attending PMS next year, we would love for you to come tomorrow evening. This is our first in-person parent night presentation and it is a great opportunity to ask questions and get more familiar with our systems, programs and day-to-day operations.

Here is the presentation for slides with more information:

    Greetings Pfamilies,

I hope this week's message finds everyone well. I'd like to thank our counselors and 8th grade teachers for helping facilitate the 8th grade invasion this past week. Although I was not on campus, all reports were very positive and it was a great day for our 8th graders visiting Pflugerville High School. The PHS Principal, Mr. Kleypas, had great things to say about the 8th grade students visiting.

Also, thank you parents for making the time to get 60 students to our Saturday Tutorials yesterday. It was great seeing students with a positive growth mindset, even on a Saturday. Students rotated through 5 stations focusing on specific ELA essential knowledge and skills. Thank you to Roseann Bartlett, Kelly Shaw, Daniela Guardiola and all of our teachers and staff who helped make it a fun day of learning for students.

    Happy New Year Panther Pfamilies,

I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday! We had a great 3 days of school last week! We began reviewing common campus-wide expectations and will continue to do this during advisories over the next few days. The spring semester always seems to go by much more quickly and the reason for that is the greater volume of events, activities and student opportunities. This week's blog outlining a few events is indicative of that.

PHS Basketball, Gym Floor and Bleacher Updates: our bleachers were installed over the break and completed this past Thursday. We are waiting on some parts to finalize the electrical components allowing the bleachers to go in and out. They look great and are almost complete.

Our Gymnasium floor is partially usable at this time and continues to warp from the initial damage. We are able to use about 3/4 of the total gym. Due to this, we are moving up  the replacement to begin at the beginning of March. This replacement will take approximately 50 days and we will use the other side of the gym during this process for off season and P.E. We are looking at a completion date of April 15th.

We have exactly one month left of our basketball season and all home games will be at Pflugerville High School. Please reach out to Coach Ramirez and Gordon for specific questions regarding the basketball schedule.

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

I have to say that the last week has been truly rewarding as an educator at Pflugerville Middle School. Last night, we had so many amazing parents, students and staff volunteers helping with getting our gym set up for students, for our winter wonderland dance. It was great seeing students dance, laugh, eat and enjoy the evening and just be kids.

This semester, I've seen teachers and staff come together to work hard for kids and do it in a very passionate way. I've seen a great positive change in student behavior, resulting in a 23% increase in school safety and a dramatic decrease in physical aggression incidents on campus.

This past week, I saw students demonstrating a strong understanding of martial arts during the KickStart Belt Ceremony. I was able to see and hear tremendous band performances as a result of many days of dedicated practice time from our students and teachers.

Our 6th graders had an author visit from Mr. John Schu this past week and they did so great, welcoming a new visitor to campus. Their level of engagement and high interest in reading was so cool to witness. As students received books from him and other staff members, the level of gratitude shown was heartwarming to say the least.

As we close out this semester,  we have a few events on the calendar. This Friday, Dec. 16th, students will be dismissed at 12:50 pm and the schedule is below. Let's have a great last week of the semester!

Early Dismissal this Friday, Dec. 16th: students will be released at 12:50 on the last day of the first semester. Here is the schedule for students linked below.

Winter Choir Concert - December 13th, 6-7 pm @ PHS Performing Arts Center: Ms. Martin and our Choir students have worked very hard for this concert and cordially invite everyone to come out and support Panther Choir.

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

With just a few days before we break for Thanksgiving, we have a few areas of focus this week. We are working to get all students to complete the panorama student engagement survey. This is a quick survey, students complete to assess how they feel at school and in the classroom, regarding peer/staff relationships and overall self-confidence. This is the third year of this survey and it provides us great data about how we are doing with building relationships and growing student self-efficacy. We are pushing all students to complete this survey by Wednesday and many have already.

I'm super proud of our students who have gone the extra mile in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities this school year. We have so many kiddos with amazing academic accomplishments and push to continue their efforts in Theatre, Band, Dance, Choir, Kickstart, Athletics and attending clubs after school. Panther students, we see you and recognize your hard work! Thank you teachers, staff and parents for supporting this success.

Here are some important dates and events coming in the next few days!

Basketball Games at PHS this WEEK! - due to some roof and drain leaks a few weeks ago, some water got on to the gym floor and has done some minor damage that requires floor repairs. Although roof and drain repairs were completed successfully, we have a few parts of the floor that need to be replaced.  We are hoping to have these completed as soon as possible and I will update everyone with a timeline soon. Due to this, all PMS basketball games will be Pflugerville High School this week. We are scheduled to get a brand new gym floor this summer. Practices will still happen in the PMS gym at this time.

Lady Panther Final Basketball Schedule - due to some scheduling conflicts with Manor ISD, some revisions were made to the girls basketball schedule. Here is the final schedule for the 22-23 season for our Lady Panthers.

    Lady Panther BB Schedule

    Boys Basketball Schedule (no change)

Theatre One-Act Play this Saturday, Nov. 19th at 11 am: Come out and support our PMS Theatre department this coming Saturday. They will compete in the One-Act Play contest at 11 am at Pflugerville High School.

English Language Arts STAAR Interim Assessments - Tuesday, Nov. 15th: students will take their second assessment of the month and will need their chromebooks again, fully charged and ready to go for Interim Assessments.

Thanksgiving Break - Nov 19-27th: district Thanksgiving Holiday will start this coming Saturday (no school during this week)

Big Decisions Curriculum - Opt-In Parent Permission Forms:

    Dear PfISD 7th and 8th Grade Parents/Guardians:

In support of House Bill 1525, Senate Bill 9, and the Texas Education Code § 28.004, parents/guardians must provide written consent for their student to participate in TEKS-based health instruction on child abuse, family violence, dating violence, sex trafficking, and human sexuality.

We want to continue to push hard with instruction and learning, so that we are getting the best out of OUR students every day. To continue with strong assessment of learning, students will be taking the STAAR Interim Assessments over the next two weeks for Math and Language Arts grades 6-8. These assessments are aligned to specific TEKS and the STAAR test students will take in April and May.

The flu and other illnesses are definitely more prevalent this year than last year.  We will continue to encourage hand washing and definitely give you a call and err on the side of caution if your child is displaying any symptoms at school.

Here are some important dates and events to be aware of as we move to Thanksgiving and then Winter Break.

TEA STAAR Interim Assessments: State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) Interim Assessments are online assessments that align to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and that help educators monitor student progress and predict student performance on STAAR. Due to this being an on-line assessment, students will need their chromebook. Students will take this assessment during their Math or ELA class over a period of 2-3 days. STUDENTS will need their chromebooks and will be reminded of this in our morning announcements.

Math - Nov. 8th (All Grades)

ELA - Nov. 15th (All Grades)

1st Nine Weeks Report Cards: Parents, we are sending 1st grading period report cards out this week.  Please be on the lookout for them and discuss your child’s progress with them. It is important to monitor how our students are doing in their classes and discuss goals that are appropriate for them.  It is also important to check their progress frequently, which is why we are also including instructions on how you can access grades online via Skyward.  If you need any help with learning how to create your account, please contact our campus and our Parent Liaison, Ms. Piña, is available to support you.

Our PTO will be meeting tomorrow at 5:30 pm to discuss further details and finalized information will be sent asap. Stay tuned for more information.

    Greetings Panther Community,

I would like to thank all of our staff, parents, students and community members for the preparation, donations, time, effort and energy in making our 2nd annual Pfall PFestival a success Friday night. So many people had a hand in organizing this event and that is what made it so wonderful, the process. A special thanks to my amazing Sr. Admin Associate, Sylvia Fernandez, for her hard work, organization and coordination of so many events and activities. We anticipated a better turnout, but it definitely exceeded most of our expectations. We will continue to make adjustments on things we can do better for next year.

Funds raised through this event will go to supporting more student activities we are planning through our PTO, National Junior Honors Society, Student Council and Student Leadership Groups.

Parents, we will not be allowing any costumes tomorrow (10/31), as we had our character day dress up through Red Ribbon Week last Friday.

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies!!

We are excited to start the school year this Thursday, August 12th. We will be continuing to strive for excellent customer service this year, that truly reflects the "panther pride" we expect from students and staff on campus. Our enrollment is growing by the day and I will report back as school starts where some of enrollment numbers fall next week. We are projected at 930 students and that seems to be the case at the moment. I know that there are some concerns about COVID Protocols and like last year, we are adapting to provided guidelines. Below is information on "things to know" before the school year starts.

Return to Learn Protocols: We have adapted the PfISD "Return to Learn" plan to work to fit our campus and will be following the outline provided PfISD Return to Learn. This will help you see where we are at in regards to: Arrival/Dismissal, Cafeteria Protocols, Classroom Procedures, Disinfecting, Hallways, Handwashing, Health Screenings and Isolation Protocols.

Student Schedules: Counselors are working to ensure schedules are accurate as possible on the first day of school.

Posted by Philip Clayton on 4/22/2021

    April 22nd

    Good Afternoon Panther Pfamilies!

Our students and teachers have been putting in a great deal of work and have adapted very well to so many changes this school year. Kudos to our entire staff and student body for demonstrating such great resilience in a climate of virtual, hybrid, and in-person instruction, coupled with wearing masks and social distancing. I’m very proud of our staff and kiddos. We have just over a month of school left and are getting close to 60% of our students attending in-person. Despite the growth, our students are continuing to demonstrate safety and school pride in a really strong way. I just wanted to check-in and touch base with everyone on a few reminders and new items listed below.

    STAAR TESTING updates:

7th Grade STAAR testing is next Tuesday, April 27th! Virtual testers should have been sent an email confirming that your child is signed up and will be taking the exam in person on campus.

If you did sign up using the google form but have not gotten an email confirmation, please email ruth.yamaguchi@pfisd.net or call 512 594-2000.

If you have not signed up already and received a direct response from Mrs. Yamaguchi, your child will not be able to test for 7th grade writing next week. The reason for this is that planning for students to test in person involves prearranged testing groups, preparing for student accommodations, and pre-screened/arranged test tickets.

Registration Requirements - Important: Online verification for returning students is now available online through the Skyward Parent Portal.  Parents/Guardians need to complete the Student Verification and Student Health Forms for the 2021-2022 school year. Please call the campus @ 594-2037 if you need help accessing this through skyward.

    • All incoming 6th grade students MUST provide proof of residency.  Proof of residency includes a copy of your mortgage statement or lease agreement AND a current utility bill.

    • If you have had a change of address, you must upload proof of residency.

    • If you need a Skyward Parent Portal account, please contact the Registrar at Laceidra.moten@pfisd.net

PMS Pet Clinic - May 5th, 5 - 7 p.m. Come out and join us for quick and easy pet vaccinations and other pet services listed on the flyer. Masks are required and social distancing is encouraged.

Virtual Book Fair: Thanks to those of you that have purchased books already! Our book fair is still available online until April 25th. Book orders over $25 will be shipped for free and all orders are sent directly to your home this year!

Click here to check out the fair! Thanks for your support!

I hope everyone has a safe, happy and healthy Friday and weekend! Please continue to contact the campus and myself with any questions and needs you may have.

    Buenas Tardes, Familias Pantera!

  • Information from Mr. Clayton for April 1st

Posted by Philip Clayton on 4/1/2021

    April 1st, 2021

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

It has been another exciting week of learning and growing here at PMS. We have been heavily involved in developing our campus improvement plan, master schedule, and creative ways we can celebrate our students next year. They deserve complete recognition for their hard work and I feel like I’ve let them down in that regard this year. We are striving to improve in all areas! There are quite a few important events, dates, and other points to be aware of as we enter this student/staff holiday.

Student Holidays - April 2nd and 5th: There is no school for students tomorrow (April 2nd) or Monday (April 5th) as these are student holidays.

STAAR TESTING: PfISD campuses are required to participate in the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR in April and May this school year. PMS will assign students to test on dates within the window.

Students who participate in remote instruction will be contacted by campus administrators to arrange times for students to be on campus to participate. Students who are not able to be on campus will participate in remote asynchronous instruction on test dates.

As we approach the spring 2021 STAAR testing season, we are encouraging ALL students (both VIRTUAL and IN PERSON) to participate in order to gain a data specific understanding of where our students stand academically.

Being that all IN PERSON students will automatically be scheduled to participate in STAAR, this survey is for VIRTUAL students ONLY.

-----> STAAR Sign Up Survey- VIRTUAL STUDENTS ONLY

     Please note the following:

    • All IN PERSON students will be scheduled to participate in assigned STAAR administrations
    • All VIRTUAL students will be REQUIRED to "sign-up" in order to participate in assigned STAAR administrations by completing this survey no later than Friday, 4/9/2021
    • All students participating will take the online version/mode of the STAAR (some exceptions may apply)
    • All students participating will utilize their district issued Chromebook for STAAR participation (If your student has not been issued a Chromebook, please call 512-594-2000 to arrange for one to be issued.)
    • All COVID safety protocols will remain in place as to ensure the safety of all (masks, physical distancing, temperature scans, etc.)

The STAAR administration dates will be:

    • 6th-8th Grades - STAAR Alternate II (week of April 5th-April 30th)
    • 6th Grade  -Math and Reading  (week of May 17th)
    • 7th Grade - Writing  (week of April 27th)

    • 8th Grade - Science, History (starts Week of May 12th)
    • 8th Grade - Reading, Math & Algebra I EOC (week of  May 17th)

  • Information about PTECH Academy

Posted by Philip Clayton on 3/5/2021

    Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have had a great Panther week. Typically, when spring arrives we notice an increase in various behaviors at the middle school level. I am proud to report that this has not been the case thus far. I praised the 6th graders today as they departed from the cafeteria in a very orderly fashion, social distancing and wearing masks appropriately. It was the best I’ve seen all year and they typically do a really good job following our safety protocols. I was a very impressed and proud Principal today. They also received recognition over the PA system for those behaviors. For as long as I’ve been an educator, I will never underestimate the power of positive feedback and recognition for students. It is a powerful element when reinforcing behaviors.

I know the STAAR test is right around the corner and there are many questions. I will be sending information after spring break regarding timelines, scheduling, and dates. We are in the process of planning a smooth transition for all of our kiddos. Stay tuned for more information.

The information below is an opportunity for our 8th grade students for next school year regarding the PTECH academy. Please take advantage of this great opportunity for your child if you are interested! I have also included information about our Regional Science Fair Winners!!

PTECH program (Pathways through Early College High School): PfISD has partnered with Austin Community College to provide our students with a dual credit curriculum. It is a program designed for our rising 9th graders (current 8th graders) to begin high school and receive their Associates degree at a completely FREE cost to them in either Computer Programming with a C++ certification or Education with an Educational Aide I certification by the time they graduate from high school.

The Computer and Information Technology program (CIT Academy) is being housed at Connally High School and the Pfuture Teachers Academy is being housed at Weiss High School; however, it is open to any rising 9th grader, regardless of where they are districted to attend (students if accepted into the program will have to agree to transfer to Weiss for Pfuture Teachers Academy or Connally for CIT Academy). Transportation IS provided from the student’s home to their PTECH campus and back again. There are no prerequisites for students to apply. Any rising 9th grader in the district is able to be a PTECH student and the only requirement is that they fill out the application and be willing to transfer (transfers are automatically accepted for PTECH students) to the school that houses the PTECH program for which they are participating.

Please reach out to Jackie Yekpabo with any questions or trouble with the links at 594-0114 or jacqueline.yekpabo@pfisd.net.

Regional Science Fair: PMS students have been outstanding the last few years at the Science Fair and this year is no different! We had 11 students in grades 6-8 that placed in 1st through 5th place in many categories. Some of them even placed in multiple categories. The areas of study were Mathematics, Plant Sciences, Microbiology, Computer Science, and Watershed Protection. Congratulations on your hard work and this achievement! Winners were announced during lunches today.

So you all know, we are continuing to focus on passionate customer service here on campus and I’ve loved that some of you all are reaching out to me directly with needs regarding your child. Please keep it up if you need anything at all. My email and phone number are below. I hope each of you have a wonderful Panther weekend!

    Buenas tardes padres y tutores,

  • Method of Instruction Information

Posted by Philip Clayton on 3/2/2021

    Good Afternoon Parents!

It’s hard to believe we have entered the month of March. This school year has seemed to fly by and slow down at times. While it has been an unusual school year, I know our processes at Pflugerville Middle School continue to improve and that is the message I have made efforts to convey to faculty, staff and students. If we can persevere through challenges and aim to keep improving, we are on the right track.

We are entering the 4th 9 weeks grading period after Spring Break. Due to some calendar changes this year, March 12th is now a student holiday and marks the beginning of Spring Break for students. Faculty and staff will be on campus on the 12th to continue planning instruction for students. Information below relates to changing your child’s Mode of Instruction officially for the 4th nine weeks and a mandatory cheerleading zoom today for those interested in joining the cheer squad.

Cheerleading Zoom Meeting Today at 6 p.m.

     Zoom link: https://pfisd-net.zoom.us/j/86105023416

4th Nine Weeks Mode of Instruction Change: While it must be a challenging time for families to make decisions about either virtual or in-person learning for their child, the next few days will mark an opportunity to change the mode of instruction for the 4th 9 weeks period.

  • Information from Mr. Clayton for Feb. 23rd

Posted by Philip Clayton on 2/23/2021

    Good Afternoon Panther Community,

I know it’s been a challenging few days for all of us, but we are excited that we are getting somewhat back to normal here on campus. I have directed our staff to assess and focus on the social/emotional needs of students today and to slowly integrate classroom content starting tomorrow. The social and emotional state of our students is always important and now it is even more important than ever with our current circumstances. Below are some important items for you all to know.

Regular School Schedule Resumes Tomorrow: In-person learners will be back on campus tomorrow and our regular Synchronous and Asynchronous schedule will resume for all students. Students should check Canvas for any specific instructions from their teachers regarding classes and assignments.

Social/Emotional Survey: All students have a survey in Canvas we would like for them to complete regarding social/emotional learning. The survey will help us identify the needs of our students so we can support them; the great thing about this survey is the data functions as their voice - so we are responding to what they are saying in addition to what we are observing.

Here are links to help them complete the survey:

Homework Hotline: This will resume next Tuesday evening, March 2nd, for any students who are interested in getting some extra help with assignments, test corrections and homework. All students have information about the Homework Hotline and links posted in their student Canvas accounts. Remember that Tuesday is for Math and Science assistance and Thursday is for Language Arts and Social Studies assistance.

Additional Resources: If you still need resources to recover from recent events, which many of us do, they are below:

    FEMA Assistance: https://www.disasterassistance.gov/

    Water Resources Available:

    https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/free-water-available-at-10-austin-sites-on-sunday-for-residents-who-cant-purchase-or-boil-water/

Thank you for your continued support of OUR campus!! It has been a pleasure getting to know more and more of our parents this school year. Have a great Panther evening!

    Regards,

    Philip Clayton
