This free mental health and wellness summit brings together youth and young adults ages 14 to 24 to discuss the challenges they may face and offers resources to support them. Workshop topics include suicide prevention, substance use, mentorship, internet safety, self-esteem, and PTSD. This year’s keynote is Billy Dorsey, a Grammy-winning songwriter who overcame depression and homelessness to reach his dreams. Learn more and register at Yes2BestATX.org.

    Parent meeting:

We are set for our next parent meeting! The topic is social-emotional learning and will offer Spanish Language translation for both sessions!

    Date/time:  January 27; 12-1pm and 6-7pm.

  • Updates and Information for Week of January 4-8th

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 1/8/2021

    Happy New Year Panther Pfamilies!

It felt like the first day of school yesterday, with 130 more students joining us in-person. Based on our estimate, we had 350 students attending yesterday, in-person and on campus. I am happy to report that students were so awesome! We had students wearing their masks, physical distancing appropriately, and adhering to seating charts. They were reminded of the importance of all these new protocols during each lunch period and they listened well.

KUDOS to…..Our Teachers, Office Staff, Educational Associates, Support Staff, and Assistant Principals:

I am most definitely a Proud Panther Principal in my first year here. All campus staff are required to be extremely flexible during any year, but this year takes the cake for sure. I have asked quite a bit from all of them the last few weeks and they have met the challenge every time. Like I said, I’m extremely proud and grateful we have such a tremendous Panther team!

Mode of Instruction: PLEASE READ, as we need your help parents. In order to gauge our true enrollment of virtual and in-person learners, we need to know if your child’s Mode of Instruction (what you’ve declared to the school) does not match how they are actually learning this 9 weeks. I completely understand that you may have kept your child at home with the rise in COVID-19 cases, however we need you to contact us if you have chosen to keep your child home and we have been expecting them. Please contact Laceidra Moten, our registrar, at laceidra.moten@pfisd.net or 512 594-2037, if there is a discrepancy with the mode of instruction your child is receiving.

    8th Grade Invasion - Next Wednesday 1/13/21

All 8th graders (virtual and in-person learners) will take a virtual tour provided by the amazing staff at Pflugerville H.S. next Wednesday. The students will get to preview the programs and pathways offered at PHS. We will be in touch with our virtual learners to provide the information they need to access/view videos provided from the high school.

    PSAT Testing – Tuesday, 1/26/21

All 8th grade students will get one free PSAT assessment this year and it will be on January 26th. We will be sending a Google form for virtual students to sign-up to take the exam IN-PERSON on that day.

Extracurricular events - have been cancelled for middle schools until further notice as we have moved to Stage 5 protocols with the rise in COVID-19 cases. When a decision is made to resume activities, all families will be notified by district staff.

    Bond and Building Renovation:

Attention Band and Choir Parents!! The Fine Arts Suite renovation is beginning near the end of January. We are expecting to have this addition completed before the new school year begins for 2021-2022. While we are excited to have an amazing new addition, we will experience some growing pains this semester. Our choir classes have moved into the main building for the semester and are now in two separate classrooms. The choir portable will be moved late next week to support the band students as the renovation begins. Band instruction will begin in the portables starting later this month. We will also be moving instruments to various locations that are not in student use over the next week to assist with a smooth transition. While this is not ideal, the growing pains will be well worth it as the design of the new addition is very similar to the brand new middle school currently under construction.

Athletics: The athletic track has been completed and will be ready for use on Monday!!

Classroom Flooring: Over the holiday break, classroom carpet was removed and replaced with laminate flooring. It looks tremendous and will be much easier to clean on a consistent basis. Kudos to Arthur Carrasco and our PfISD facilities staff for making this happen in such a short time frame!

Free Meals Continuing for the Spring Semester of 2021:

As we start the Spring 2021 semester, breakfast and lunch meals will continue to be free, regardless of free/reduced/paid status for our students. This includes in-person and curbside learning, as well as anyone 18 or younger, via USDA allowances.  This does not include ala carte or extras.

I hope everyone has a safe and restful weekend. Go Panthers!!

    Sincerely,

  • Early Release Schedule

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 12/15/2020

    Greetings Panther Community,

We are only a few short days away from the Winter Break and it has come quickly as it does each year. I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy. I want to give a quick shout out to our amazing teachers and educational associates for their eagerness to learn new ways to reach students this semester. We have asked our teachers to learn Canvas mid-semester and the reality is, they have been learning with the students as well.

I believe it is important to always adapt in any climate and sometimes that means going in headfirst and making some mistakes along the way. I know I have made many through this journey, but will continue to work hard for our Panther community. The challenges will make us all stronger, especially if we are supportive of one another through the process.

Thank you to all the parents who reached out about the password change for our students, we had a few calls and were able to find solutions rather quickly!

We have just a few updates you need to know below.

Early Release Schedule: Students will be released early this Friday for early dismissal.

  • Weekly Communication from Mr. Clayton (in English and Spanish)

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 12/3/2020

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

I hope everyone had a great break! It’s hard to believe we are almost halfway through this school year. A few things that are very important to know moving forward are listed below, as we make our final push of the first semester. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times. I need to hear from parents, so please call or email me with any questions, celebrations, suggestions, or concerns.

Changing your child’s mode of instruction: if you want your child to move from virtual to in-person learning on campus in January, please complete this survey by clicking on the link below:

Survey Link for Change in Method of Instruction (3rd Nine Weeks

You may also contact our registrar, Laceidra Moten at 594-2037, or by email laceidra.moten@pfisd.net if you would have any issues with sending your information through this link.  The last day to declare a change is on December 9th by 11:59 pm. I will be sending reminders periodically up until December 9th. If your child is learning virtually and will remain virtual, no action is required from you.

The next opportunity to change the mode of instruction for your child will be in March.

First Day Packets: We still have some families that have not turned in first-day student informational packets. You can drop off completed packets in the front office here on campus. Incoming 6th graders must provide proof of residency to our registrar. Also, if you have a change of address, phone, or email address, please let us know as well so we can update your information in Skyward!

Schedule Changes: After receiving parent, student and teacher feedback, we have placed a hold on schedule changes. We will continue to make some changes to schedules beginning in January and any other absolute necessary changes needed over the next two weeks. Remember, the primary cause of any changes made after the break is to adapt instruction that is the best fit for our students.

Future Parent-Trainings Survey: We know that remote learning can be hugely challenging for both students and parents. We'll be offering monthly virtual training sessions to share resources, strategies, and ideas for how you can support your child.

Please fill out the survey below so we can know which topics you're most interested in learning more about. Thank you!

Here’s the link to the survey.

Here is the link to prior Parent Training sessions. The document is in both English and Spanish.

    Canvas Parent Training:

All teachers will transition to our Canvas platform in January. Below are some links to parent training sessions on December 9th. Please contact Samantha Vasquez at 594-2021 or samantha.vasquez@pfisd.net with questions about the trainings and links below.

Mentors are well-trained community volunteers who provide support to students by meeting once a week at school, or through virtual communication. All communication between mentors and their students as well as any sensitive information will be treated as confidential. If you have any questions, please contact Madeline Cardone, School Social Worker, at 512-594-2022 or email madeline.cardone@pfisd.net.

Yearbooks are available for purchase: The price of yearbooks has been extended through December. You can own a piece of our school’s history for $30! The price will go up in January. • Important Information and Updates

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 11/16/2020
    Hello Panther Pfamilies!
What a great week on campus! Although we all continue to face adversity and challenges, I am grateful for every day I get to work in public education. Your kiddos and our students have been a pleasant reminder that resiliency is a key part of living a full and happy life. Over the last few months, I have heard so many people assume things they believed would be true during the pandemic. However, over time, these assumptions have been proven false. I’ve now seen students wear masks throughout the day, reply respectfully to new requests of safety, adjust to learning in different modalities and treat their peers and teachers with compassion during a frustrating time in history. I am very proud to work with our panther families, teachers and staff each day! Panther Pride is alive and well. 😊

Please review the important information below regarding services and information pertaining to your child and PfMS.

First Positive COVID-19 Tests and Campus Contact Tracing Protocols
We did learn of a positive COVID case from two different students this week. Although this was unfortunate, I was very pleased at how our team worked together to respond quickly and appropriately. Below are the steps we take as soon as we are notified of a positive case on our campus.

Step 1: We become notified of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
Step 2: We talk with that individual and their family and inform them they must be isolated for 10 days (and no symptoms).
Step 3: Administrative staff talk to each teacher who directly teaches that student to assess if they will be quarantined.
Step 4: We perform contact tracing to determine if any staff or students had “direct exposure” (came within 6 feet for a total duration of 15 straight minutes, within the last two days, with or without a mask on). If yes, that individual will be required to quarantine for 14 days.
Step 5: Communication is developed and distributed directly to each staff member and student who are required to quarantine due to direct exposure.
Step 6: Communication is developed and distributed to all stakeholders (parents and staff).

If you have any questions concerning the policies or procedures regarding COVID protocols, please contact me.

    Schedule Changes
We are working intentionally to reduce the amount of hybrid classes your child is attending and teachers are teaching. Hybrid classes refer to teachers on-campus facilitating virtual learning to students at home and instruction in the classroom. We will be working with counselors to have each teacher teach sections that are either all virtual or all in-person as we move toward the second semester and in to the spring semester as well. The adjustment to pure virtual and pure in-person classes will require some schedule changes, or in some cases, just a teacher change. It is our belief that pure methods of instruction will yield a stronger performance from the learner and the teacher throughout the process.

    Free breakfast and lunch reminders
Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, Aramark Food Services started providing free breakfast and lunch meals to students at all PfISD campuses, Monday through Friday, as allowable by the USDA and Texas Department of Agriculture, for the 2020-21 school year. This offering includes on-site meals for students participating in in-person learning, as well as curbside services for virtual learners, and meals for qualifying afterschool care programs.

All children under age 18 may receive free USDA reimbursable meals regardless of economic status. PfISD encourages all parents/guardians to apply for free or reduced price meals through its online application, available at www.pfisd.net/meals.

    Automated Calls about Attendance
PfISD has started automated calls for absences again. Unfortunately, it appeared the system glitched a bit on the first round. Thank you for your patience. “What should I as a parent do if I get one of those calls?" – simple, just talk to your child about the class period and the “absence” if they are virtual. Please make sure they are logging into Canvas or Google Classroom during the day and access the materials for that class so the Teacher can mark them present.

    Integral Care
    Parents and Caregivers,
We know that our students are facing many new challenges. We want you to know that your child’s campus has a therapist from Integral Care available to provide ongoing counseling at no cost. Counseling can be provided by video conference using their laptop, phone or tablet.  Signs that you child may benefit from counseling  include: frequent crying and sadness, frequent irritability, worrying to the point of it affecting their daily living, panic attacks, increased outbursts and aggression or other symptoms that are concerning to you. Please talk to your child's school social worker/counselor if you have concerns or fill out the referral on your own:  Student Referral Form for Integral Care School-Based Counseling   In the link, please fill out pages 1-3 and leave page 4 blank.

Click here to contact our school's counselors.

    Canvas Transition
Many of our teachers have begun using Canvas as the primary way for students to receive virtual instruction. Some teachers may continue to link from Canvas to Google Classroom for specific assignments until January. Students will log in to Canvas directly using Clever (Clever Support) or by going to pfisd.instructure.com and logging in with PfISD Google Account.

We want to remind you all about our Canvas training course that can help you learn more about how you, as a parent, can observe your student's classwork and how students will access their assignments in Canvas. To access the training courses for parents and students, please read the Instructions for Parents and Instructions for Students linked below in English and Spanish.

Canvas Training Course Instructions for Parents: English | Spanish
Canvas Training Course Instructions for Students: English | Spanish

Parents and Guardians will need to have an account and be an observer to log in and access the training course. Instructions on how to create your parent observer account in Canvas are linked below. It is suggested that you create your account using a desktop or laptop. These instructions can also be found on the Pflugerville ISD Return to Learn page or parents can click to watch this video in English to set up a Canvas account to observe their students.

How-To Set Up Parent Canvas Account: English | Spanish

If you have any questions or problems with setting up your Canvas account, please utilize our Let's Talk system (www.pfisd.net/letstalk) and click on the Canvas button.

Link to Zoom Open Community Mtg and brief recap,
We held a virtual public community meeting last Wednesday and it was great to speak with those of you who joined. We reviewed our campus accountability ratings, Title 1 programming, Campus Improvement Plan and other important areas needed to keep improving our campus. We have implemented several systems per district guidelines to keep our students and staff safe and are so proud of our students and how they have adapted to following these procedures.

The 2nd nine weeks of this school year is quickly approaching. ALL parents will need to select their method of learning for the second nine weeks between September 28th and 30th. We will share more information about the process closer to those dates. Please mark these dates down on your calendar.

In addition to providing Chromebooks to our students, we were able to distribute hotspots to some of our families for virtual learning. For in-person learning, please remember to have students bring their Chromebook, case, charger, headphones, mask, paper bag, and a water bottle. Students may bring a backpack to school. If you are having issues with technology, here is the link to get assistance: https://www.pfisd.net/Page/7772

Curbside meal services are available on a daily basis for our virtual learners. Pick-up is in the back of the school from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. If you haven’t already filled out the 2020 meal application, here is the link:https://www.pfisd.net/Page/500

At this time, we also want to introduce Mr. Brian Ernest, our interim principal, helping out at Pflugerville Middle School. Mr. Ernest has several years of experience in our district, including here at Pflugerville Middle School, and we look forward to working with him.

    Sincerely,

The Administrative Team of Pflugerville Middle School

  • In-Person Learning COVID Procedures

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 9/13/2020

    Dear Panther Families,

Thank you for your patience as we plan for our students to return to in-person learning on campus starting Monday, September 14th. We're excited to welcome students back to our campus but also know you have many questions and concerns. We want to assure you that we are following district policies and procedures to keep our staff and students safe.

If your child was selected for in-person learning, you should have received a confirmation phone call or email. Please note that students returning to campus will need to bring their district-provided Chromebook or a personal laptop on a daily basis, in addition to their case, charger, headphones, mask, paper bag for mask (not a ziploc bag), water bottle (to fill up during the day), and school supplies like pencil and paper.

The district will continue to provide curbside meal service for virtual learners. Pick-up times will be 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. daily. Lunch meals are charged by student status (free, reduced or paid), but all PfISD campuses offer free breakfast, regardless of student status.

Click here for the campus-wide procedures that we will implement starting tomorrow, including a new bell schedule that will be followed by both virtual and in-person learners.

We will continue to evaluate the needs of our campus moving forward and, again, thank you for your patience.

    Sincerely,

The Administrative Team of Pflugerville Middle School

    Greetings Panther Families,
Earlier this week, I hosted a zoom session and gave our families an overview of our plan to return to on-campus learning. Besides giving valuable feedback, our community members shared their questions and concerns as we move forward. Student and staff safety is our top priority and we are working hard to put all protective measures into place.

  • Instruccion Virtual y Participacion Comunitaria

Posted by Valerie Burleigh on 8/26/2020 2:10:00 PM

    Saludos familias Panther,
