• Welcome Back!!! Panther News and Updates: July 20th

Posted by Philip Clayton on 7/20/2024 4:00:00 PM

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies and Students!!

First, I want to welcome our new 6th grade parents and students to Pflugerville Middle School! As you start this new journey into middle school, it's very natural to have feelings of worry and the fear of the unknown. Fortunately, for all of our new students and families, we have made great strides each year since the pandemic, to continue to enhance instruction, safety, communication systems and student leadership. This year will be no different in those terms, as our leadership team has been planning initiatives that align with continuous improvement in all of those areas and more.

I am super excited to welcome back our returning 7th and 8th grade students and families! I have consistently told this year's 8th grade class that they have the strongest leadership potential that I have seen in my four years at Pflugerville Middle School. I have high expectations for our 7th and 8th graders and know they will rise to the occasion this school year!

Before I begin providing some important dates, procedures and information about the upcoming school year, I want you to have a firm understanding of who I am and what I value.

My name is Philip Clayton, and I am very grateful to be starting my 5th year as principal at Pflugerville Middle School. I am starting my 11th year in PfiSD and was previously in Round Rock ISD for 12 years. I am married to my amazing wife Carrie, who has been my biggest supporter the last 9 years. I have three wonderful children, Colton, Tyler and Aubrey. Tyler and Aubrey have started their own careers in film and nursing, while Colton is starting his sophomore year in high school this fall.

What drives me each day is the opportunity to build connections with students, staff, parents and families.  Connecting and building relationships should always be at the forefront of our job as educators, as it lays the foundation for building successful systems within the school and organization.

I believe that each one of our 94 staff members are here to serve students and families to the best of our ability and that service means approaching each day with a strong work ethic and a mindset that all students will learn and thrive, in regard to student safety and achievement.

Lastly, I believe each of us at Pflugerville MS are charged with responding to families to find solutions to any challenge that we may face together, no matter how big or small. The partnership between our panther staff and our families, has been a critical factor in creating a positive campus culture and has a large impact on how students feel and interact on campus each day.

Before I list dates of events, etc, the campus is still closed as we are waiting on the HVAC replacement to be completed. We are anticipating the building to open on July 31st. We are all very excited for a new air conditioner, believe me! I will also be updating the marquee in the front of the school at this time as well. Due to the renovation, the servers are down as to not overheat.

All administrative, office and counseling staff will be at Bohls Middle School this week and next, as we wait on construction completion and permission to enter the building. If you need anything regarding registration and face to face help, we will be at Bohls MS ready to assist until July 31st. Here are our direct lines for assistance:

We will have a brief parent presentation for parents at 9:15 am with an oppoortunity for questions at the end.

7th Grade Student Vaccinations - State Requirements:

All 7th grade parents/guardians must have submitted students shot records to shots@pfisd.net. We will be reaching out to your directly if you have not, please do not resubmit if you have already submitted records. These are for the following vaccinations:

According to Texas state law, students entering 7th grade must have the following vaccinations before the first day of school:

    • Tdap: A booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) if it's been at least five years since the last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine

    • Meningococcal: One dose of meningococcal conjugate (MCV)

    • Varicella: Two doses of varicella (chicken pox) or documented history of the disease

Students can provide acceptable documentation of their immunizations, such as a doctor's note, immunization card, or previous school record, to their school nurse before the first day of school. Documentation should include the month, day, and year for each immunization.

Exemptions: Students may be exempt from immunization requirements for medical reasons, religious beliefs, or military service. If a student can't receive vaccines due to medical concerns or religious beliefs, their parents or guardians can request an affidavit through the Immunizations Section Affidavit Request through our Health and Safety department. This affidavit must be notarized and is good for 2 years.

Students without records submitted will NOT be allowed to stay on campus the first day of school per state law and parents/guardians will be called to pick up their child. Our staff will be reaching out directly again this week to anyone that has not submitted shot records. This is my least favorite situation that occurs at the beginning of the year, but we have to abide by this state law.

For questions or needs, please reach out to our new school nurse - Jean Nations @ jean.nations@pfisd.net. Ms. Nations comes to us from Wieland Elementary and we are excited for her to join our panther family!

Chromebook Changes for 24-25 School Year:

Student chromebooks will remain on campus this year in each core content (Math/ELA/Science/Social Studies) classroom. Students will not be issued chromebooks to take home each day. We are expecting these carts close to the start of school. Due to this change, organization will be a high priority for student support this school year. Our advisory classes will have a strong emphasis on organization, student assignments, managing their calendar/due dates and preparing for additional homework and projects throughout the year. All students will be provided a student binder for organization of all class assignments and will be provided specific documents to support learning, time management and organization. Students may also bring their own binder to start the year and will be provided additional support documents (calendar, etc)

    Physical Education Needs for 24-25:

For P.E. and Pre-Athletics, students will need the following items:

    • Black Athletic Shorts
    • Grey T-Shirt
    • Tennis Shoes
    • Combination Lock for Gym Lockers

    School Supply List:

Our communications department has worked to develop the link below on our website to provide vendors for school supply purchases. Here is the link to access our Pflugerville MS school supplies needed for this year.

    https://www.pfisd.net/Page/9953

Any additional school supplies brought from the list will be provided to each advisory teacher. They will appreciate the extra supplies for usage during the school year.

PMS Rules and Regulations for the 24-25 School Year:

Parents, linked you will find some guidance on procedures, rules and campus regulations to help navigate middle school this school year. This includes information on arrival, dismissal, lunch rules/procedures and more. We will also post this on the campus website in the coming days. Returning parents, there are very few changes to any of our procedures for arrival, dismissal and lunches.

    PMS Secondary Rules and Regulations

    Pflugerville ISD Dress Code:

Here is a link to the student ID dress code for this year. Dress Code -https://www.pfisd.net/dresscode Parents, the top violations the administration has to address from time to time are typically the following:

    • Pajama pants
    • Sagging pants below the waistline
    • Shirts not touching the waistband exposing the midriff

    Student ID's:

We will taking pictures of students for their new student ID during the first two weeks of school during advisory. It is district policy for students to have their ID at all times on campus and it is an important safety measure to identify students. It is our goal for this to become a habit for students and to create systems to remember this each day, much like we as adults, have a plan for our ID each day. Students will be required to have their ID at all PfiSD events and there will be no exceptions to this rule as well. Student ID's will also be required to purchase any items from our new school store this school year.

    Free Breakfast Again This Year!!

Students will be provided a free breakfast again this school year. Cafeteria doors open at 7:50 am and breakfast ends at 8:15 am, unless we have students late due to bus/transportation delays.

    Free and Reduced Lunch Applications:

We are encouraging every family to complete this application. We had many families complete this form and be accepted as either free or reduced, who did not feel they would qualify. Here are two links for information and the application:

    Parent Communication Systems:

I will communicate via email and this blog weekly, regarding important news and information. I will typically send an email with the blog link as a reminder that it has been updated. I will be sending text messages to parents and families when necessary, but text communication will be less frequent, as to not overcommunicate to your text messages.

Teachers and Assistant Principals will be using school status, which allows for text and email in any language to eliminate any barriers about student progress or general information. If your primary language is not English, your messages will be translated to English for staff who prefer to communicate that way.

    Panther Parent Teacher Organization:

Our Panther PTO has continued to grow each year and is an important support for our students and staff. If you would like to stay in touch as a volunteer or join the PTO, we would love to add more parents. We are starting a new Band App for this school year and signing up will allow you to help or volunteer when you have the time. We will be sending out our PTO meeting dates for the entire year, later in August. Here is the QR code below to stay connected.

August 9th - Back to School Night from 5-7 pm (MS and HS times):

We are excited to offer a a back to school night for students and families to come explore the building, meet staff members and get more information from counselors, principals and office staff. To give any parents with high school aged students ample time to go to the high school, I will be providing an informational session from 5:30-6:00 pm and then the same session repeated from 6:15-6:45 pm.

As we may be finalizing schedules on the 9th, we will not be issuing schedules on that day.

Open House will take place in early September and will offer parents an opportunity to meet their child's teacher officially. This is a typical practice that allows for any schedule changes to take place the first two weeks of school ensuring schedules are final for Open House.

New Student-Centered Initiative - Panther "House" Model:

We are excited to start year 1 of our "House" initiative. While we have been increasing our positive incentives and rewards for students each year, our panther staff and myself felt we needed more for our students. This model will target specific positive behaviors we wish to see from our students and all staff will be able to reward students through positive reinforcement with points in different areas of the school. The classroom, commons areas and the cafeteria will have specific behaviors outlined and connected to student expectations. This planning began in the spring, and I'm so proud of the planning our teachers have done over the summer.

The points students earn can be used in the morning from 7:50-8:10 am in our campus store, and we will be building this menu of items through student inventory surveys as the year goes on. Students will drive what we add to the school store during the year and school funds have been put aside for this purpose.

Furthermore, we aim to build upon an already strong student culture through "House" competitions during the year celebrating each house with rallies, similar to pep rallies as we consistently see which house in the lead with total points. We will continue to have separate campus pep rallies during the year with all students and staff present.

Another critical component of this model will be student leadership. Student leaders will be on planning committees and learn important communication and self-advocacy skills through various processes.

That being said...we are in year 1 of this early implementation phase and we must first go slow, before we go fast. It will be important to establish clear procedures and routines this year and then build on them year to year. Students and parents, this is a large undertaking, and please be patient as we begin the process this year.

    Student Clubs for 24-25:

As we have added 6 new teachers to join our 50 other returning teachers, there is an opportunity to add more clubs as well. Couple that with 300 new 6th grade students and I'm sure we will have some great new club opportunities this year. During the first 3 weeks of school, I will send out a club interest google form for students to share ideas and interests for after-school clubs. If there are teacher or staff willing to sponsor any of these, then it will be an official club. Here is a list of a few clubs we have had on campus the last 4 years:

    • "No Place for Hate"
    • EA Sports/Gaming

    New Administrator and Counselors:

Posted by Philip Clayton on 5/27/2024 2:00:00 PM

    Greetings Panther Community,

As we close the chapter on the 23-24 school year, I am writing this with great pride, as I reflect upon the accomplishments of our students, teachers, staff and parent organizations that have worked so hard to make this a great school year. Here are a few notes about these accomplishments:

    • KickStart finished as the 3rd ranked program in the state with multiple state champions and over 50 regional attendees.
    • Theatre Arts earned the highest distinction in the one-act play this fall.
    • Band and Choir earned top honors at UIL and in competitions outside the district as well
    • Students earned regional and state honors at the Science Fair this year.
    • We just earned our "No Place for Hate" distinction and have a thriving program and club for students to participate in.
    • We offered more clubs this school year than in prior years.
    • We had our first Multicultural Fair, which was a huge success, lead by Ms. Salcido, Oz and our students.
    • We inducted more students in to our NJHS program than in year's past and started the process with our 7th graders this school year.

These are just a few of the many accomplishments our panther students and staff worked together to earn this school year.

This last blog of the school year will list some initiatives for next school year and some important dates and events.

    Important Dates:

Last Day of School - May 29th and Early Release (Dismissal at 12:50 pm)

PMS Closed this Summer for HVAC replacement (June 3rd to July 22nd):

Although we will be closed this summer, we are excited to have our new HVAC system installed for the 24-25 school year. The end date of July 22nd is a tentative date and it may take a bit longer. Our maintenance department has worked really hard to keep our current system functioning the best it could, which required constant care over the last couple of years. While we will be checking voicemail consistently this summer, you can always email me directly @ philip.clayton@pfisd.net for assistance as I will be working throughout the summer months at various locations (Bohls MS and Kelly Lane MS primarily).

Only 30 Yearbooks Left!!! $40 Cash or check made out to Pflugerville Middle School:

First Day of School Next Year - August 13th:

Students will be returning on August 13th for the official start of the 24-25 school year!

    "House" Implementation Next School Year:

As we continue to try and improve the student experience and grow students even further socially and academically, we are implementing a new "House" system next school year. Students will be in 4 separate houses, grades 6-8 and earn points daily through positive behavior. Our staff recently worked to determine which expected and pro-social behaviors will be rewarded each day in various settings on campus. These points can be used in our "House" store for tangible items to purchase and will also serve as points for their specific house to create a competitive environment with celebrations each 9 weeks. We have worked with other campuses who have successfully implemented this process over the last month. This has supported us to begin creating structures, committees and we will be working with teacher leaders this summer as well in preparation for implementation.

While this is the last weekly blog of the school year, I will definitely send out information as needed this summer.

    Sincerely,

    Mr. Clayton

We ended this past week with some fun and celebration, as we had our last campus-wide pep rally. The 8th graders finished strong by taking the spirit stick back from the 6th graders. Students showed great support for one another and our various programs as it was an important day to celebrate student and staff successes.

It's hard to believe we only have 6 1/2 days of school left, and we are about to close the last chapter of the 23-24 school year. As this year comes to a close, our panther staff and leadership team are busy planning for our 24-25 school year, and we are excited about what's to come!

  • Principal Blog Update - May 12th, 2024: Happy Mother's Day

Posted by Philip Clayton on 5/12/2024 5:10:00 PM

    Greetings Panther Community,

I'd like to start this messaging by recognizing and thanking so many amazing mother's on Mother's Day. I see the impact you all have on the growth and development of our panther students each day and you all are a blessing in the lives of so many. Thank you!!

As we near the end of the school year, there is much to celebrate! As we await STAAR scores at the end of the month, we have seen great academic and social/emotional growth and those were specific goals for us at the beginning of the year.

We recently found out that we once again received a distinction for "No Place for Hate" and we will continue building on the momentum from this year as a core philosophy for our campus.

Here are a few updates to take note of as we rapidly approach the end of the year. Please read the chromebook information below, as it is very important.

Important Chromebook Information (District Communication and Campus Procedures):

PfISD will be providing the opportunity for students to purchase their Chromebooks over the next two weeks. Our existing Chromebooks have been in use for 4 years and are scheduled for replacement this summer as part of our 2022 Bond Technology replacement plan.

Students who currently have a Chromebook device assigned to them, and would like to keep their current device for personal use, will have the opportunity to purchase it for $20.00. The purchase includes their current Chromebook and their current charger. The device purchase is “as is”, in its current state, and does not include repairs or replacement of any damage, missing parts, or missing chargers. Once the device is purchased, it will no longer be supported by PfISD. The device will be returned to its factory settings at the end of the school year and no longer managed by the district.

The purchasing window is scheduled to open tomorrow, May 13th, and will remain open through May 24th. Payments can be made via RevTrak which can be accessed at https://pflugervilleisd.revtrak.net/

All students will be required to bring their device to school in order to update inventory as either sold or returned.

Now is a good time to check with your student to ensure they have their device. Students not purchasing their device will be required to return their Chromebooks and chargers at the end of this school year.

Pflugerville Middle School Chromebook Timeline and Procedures:

    • May 13-17th - during all lunches, students can begin paying $20 to purchase their device or turn it in if they no longer need it for assignments.
    • May 20th - 8th grade will turn in chromebooks (unless paid for via cash or revtrack) during ELA classes
    • May 21st - 7th graders will turn in chromebooks (unless paid for via cash or revtrack) during ELA classes
    • May 22nd - 6th grade will turn in chromebooks (unless paid for via cash or revtrack) during ELA classes

    Happy Cinco de Mayo Panthers,

We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year and there are many events to celebrate and honor our students for their outstanding achievements this school year. Our last day of school will be May 29th and dismissal will be at 12:45 pm. Here are the latest announcements, dates and reminders for our remaining school events.

Teacher Appreciation Week Starts Tomorrow (May 6-10):

Since I began teaching in the early 2000's, the amount of work required of teachers has increased exponentially. Our panther teachers have continually met these requirements and challenges head on and have impressed me so much this school year. Thank you, Panther teachers and staff, for choosing Pflugerville Middle School and making a difference each and every day. One week is not enough to say thanks, but this week belongs to you! Thank you for your time, commitment, energy and passion you bring each day.

Parents and students, I am encouraging you all to show your appreciation in any way you can, whether it's a card, positive e-mail or a kind gesture. Kudos to our PTO for working to celebrate them each day this week as well.

    Cinco de Mayo History:

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Sunday, May 5 in 2024, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican American populations.

    Greetings Panthers,

Writing this blog over the weekend, has brought me a great deal of pride and joy, regarding the work our teachers and students are doing each day. Our students' hard work has continually lead to accolades and achievements this school year and it starts with intentional planning and delivery of instruction from our Panther staff members.

Parents and guardians, you play a huge role in your continued support for these students and the long hours so many of them have spent outside the regular school day.  Thank you for partnering with us and playing such a pivotal role in the success of our panthers!

These students have worked tirelessly for the last couple of months to finish their artwork and submit essay questions. This annual event is hosted online and in person, the following students took time out of their weekend to participate in this event. These students stepped up to compete against 1000 other middle school students in the region and received top rankings.

    Greetings Panthers,

I hope you all have had a safe and happy weekend and are enjoying some cooler weather today.

I was speaking to Mr. Fillmore and some of our KickStart students Friday and was thrilled to learn that our program is currently listed as the 3rd ranked program in the state. This is in comparison to every middle school in Texas, which includes programs with a student enrollment much higher than ours, which is currently at 800 students.

This achievement is even more impressive, when you look at the other schools with thriving programs and high student program enrollment. What an amazing accomplishment this year!

  • Panther News and Updates - April 7th, 2024

Posted by Philip Clayton on 4/7/2024 3:00:00 PM

    Greetings Panthers and Panther Pfamilies,

I want to give a huge shout-out to our community for coming out to our first Multicultural Fair yesterday. Ms. Salcido and Mr. Oz in collaboration with our No Place for Hate Coalition created and organized an amazing event. Thank you to Mrs. Magnon and our NJHS students for creating activites and helping us set up and break down the event. We had tremendous support from Mrs. Slater, Mrs. Leverton, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Robison, Mrs. Garcia, Mrs. Canzonetta, Mrs. Rivera, Mrs. Lo and many other staff members. My apologies for leaving anyone out, we had such a great turnout of staff support and collaboration.

A huge thank you to our parents and volunteers who also showed up early and stayed after the event to help. Many parents also helped lead activities throughout the day. It was a true, community, team effort.

Thank you to Alex Okafor for hanging out with us as well. He was nice enough to sign a UT football and will be one of the items we raffle off later in the week. All raffle tickets will be selected later this week and we will be calling all winners for you to come get your prizes!!

    Solar Eclipse Tomorrow, April 8th:

Here is our schedule for the eclipse tomorrow. The only change is during lunches and advisory, which are flipped.

Here is the information I've been sending out and will stay the same for tomorrow.

Hello parents and families. The Solar Eclipse, as many of you know, will take place on April 8th. We are planning to flip our lunch and advisory times and arrive at our fire drill locations, outside of the bulding around 1:32 pm to view the eclipse. All students and staff will be provided eclipse glasses.

Students will only be allowed to take off their glasses during totality, when the sun is completely covered by the moon. This will be from 1:36 pm to about 1:38 pm. We will be communicating to all staff and students with an air horn of 1 beep for glasses to be removed and 3 beeps for students to put their glasses back on well before totality ends. Although totality is closer to two minutes, we will be allowing students closer to 1 minute to ensure safety of eyesight for all students and staff. All staff were just trained on these procedures as well during the Wednesday faculty meeting.

Students will be expected to follow all procedures and expectations during this event, with no exceptions due to safety implications. Any students not following directions, will be escorted inside to the cafeteria. All students will receive the following:

    • Eclipse glasses w/ (International Safety Code- ISO 12312-2)

    • Safety course via canvas during  advisory for the week of April 2nd-5th to prepare them for wearing glasses appropriately and negative effects on the eyes when looking directly at the sun without proper eyewear

    • Activities presented with the slides to ensure all students understand usage, safety and the science behind the eclipse formation.

    • Activities that will enhance the experience using paper and crafts to look at shadows on the ground.
    • Procedures and expectations for April 8th

If you would not like to have your child participate in this event for any reason, you MUST read and complete the Parent-Opt Out form which I have linked in the letter in both English and Spanish and is also linked below. Any students that do not participate will be closely supervised in the cafeteria during the eclipse.

READING STAAR TEST THIS WEEK - Wednesday,  April 10th (Make Ups on April 11th 12th):

All students will need a fully charged chromebook for their test this week. We will be providing reminders for all students Monday and Tuesday. Water and snacks will be provided to all students.

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies!!

We are excited to start the school year this Thursday, August 12th. We will be continuing to strive for excellent customer service this year, that truly reflects the "panther pride" we expect from students and staff on campus. Our enrollment is growing by the day and I will report back as school starts where some of enrollment numbers fall next week. We are projected at 930 students and that seems to be the case at the moment. I know that there are some concerns about COVID Protocols and like last year, we are adapting to provided guidelines. Below is information on "things to know" before the school year starts.

Return to Learn Protocols: We have adapted the PfISD "Return to Learn" plan to work to fit our campus and will be following the outline provided PfISD Return to Learn. This will help you see where we are at in regards to: Arrival/Dismissal, Cafeteria Protocols, Classroom Procedures, Disinfecting, Hallways, Handwashing, Health Screenings and Isolation Protocols.

Student Schedules: Counselors are working to ensure schedules are accurate as possible on the first day of school.

  • Information for April 22nd

Posted by Philip Clayton on 4/22/2021

    April 22nd

    Good Afternoon Panther Pfamilies!

Our students and teachers have been putting in a great deal of work and have adapted very well to so many changes this school year. Kudos to our entire staff and student body for demonstrating such great resilience in a climate of virtual, hybrid, and in-person instruction, coupled with wearing masks and social distancing. I’m very proud of our staff and kiddos. We have just over a month of school left and are getting close to 60% of our students attending in-person. Despite the growth, our students are continuing to demonstrate safety and school pride in a really strong way. I just wanted to check-in and touch base with everyone on a few reminders and new items listed below.

    STAAR TESTING updates:

7th Grade STAAR testing is next Tuesday, April 27th! Virtual testers should have been sent an email confirming that your child is signed up and will be taking the exam in person on campus.

If you did sign up using the google form but have not gotten an email confirmation, please email ruth.yamaguchi@pfisd.net or call 512 594-2000.

If you have not signed up already and received a direct response from Mrs. Yamaguchi, your child will not be able to test for 7th grade writing next week. The reason for this is that planning for students to test in person involves prearranged testing groups, preparing for student accommodations, and pre-screened/arranged test tickets.

Registration Requirements - Important: Online verification for returning students is now available online through the Skyward Parent Portal.  Parents/Guardians need to complete the Student Verification and Student Health Forms for the 2021-2022 school year. Please call the campus @ 594-2037 if you need help accessing this through skyward.

    • All incoming 6th grade students MUST provide proof of residency.  Proof of residency includes a copy of your mortgage statement or lease agreement AND a current utility bill.

    • If you have had a change of address, you must upload proof of residency.

    • If you need a Skyward Parent Portal account, please contact the Registrar at Laceidra.moten@pfisd.net

PMS Pet Clinic - May 5th, 5 - 7 p.m. Come out and join us for quick and easy pet vaccinations and other pet services listed on the flyer. Masks are required and social distancing is encouraged.

Virtual Book Fair: Thanks to those of you that have purchased books already! Our book fair is still available online until April 25th. Book orders over $25 will be shipped for free and all orders are sent directly to your home this year!

Click here to check out the fair! Thanks for your support!

I hope everyone has a safe, happy and healthy Friday and weekend! Please continue to contact the campus and myself with any questions and needs you may have.

    Buenas Tardes, Familias Pantera!

  • Information from Mr. Clayton for April 1st

Posted by Philip Clayton on 4/1/2021

    April 1st, 2021

    Greetings Panther Pfamilies,

It has been another exciting week of learning and growing here at PMS. We have been heavily involved in developing our campus improvement plan, master schedule, and creative ways we can celebrate our students next year. They deserve complete recognition for their hard work and I feel like I’ve let them down in that regard this year. We are striving to improve in all areas! There are quite a few important events, dates, and other points to be aware of as we enter this student/staff holiday.

Student Holidays - April 2nd and 5th: There is no school for students tomorrow (April 2nd) or Monday (April 5th) as these are student holidays.

STAAR TESTING: PfISD campuses are required to participate in the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR in April and May this school year. PMS will assign students to test on dates within the window.

Students who participate in remote instruction will be contacted by campus administrators to arrange times for students to be on campus to participate. Students who are not able to be on campus will participate in remote asynchronous instruction on test dates.

As we approach the spring 2021 STAAR testing season, we are encouraging ALL students (both VIRTUAL and IN PERSON) to participate in order to gain a data specific understanding of where our students stand academically.

Being that all IN PERSON students will automatically be scheduled to participate in STAAR, this survey is for VIRTUAL students ONLY.

-----> STAAR Sign Up Survey- VIRTUAL STUDENTS ONLY

     Please note the following:

    • All IN PERSON students will be scheduled to participate in assigned STAAR administrations
    • All VIRTUAL students will be REQUIRED to "sign-up" in order to participate in assigned STAAR administrations by completing this survey no later than Friday, 4/9/2021
    • All students participating will take the online version/mode of the STAAR (some exceptions may apply)
    • All students participating will utilize their district issued Chromebook for STAAR participation (If your student has not been issued a Chromebook, please call 512-594-2000 to arrange for one to be issued.)
    • All COVID safety protocols will remain in place as to ensure the safety of all (masks, physical distancing, temperature scans, etc.)

The STAAR administration dates will be:

    • 6th-8th Grades - STAAR Alternate II (week of April 5th-April 30th)
    • 6th Grade  -Math and Reading  (week of May 17th)
    • 7th Grade - Writing  (week of April 27th)
    • 7th Grade - Math and Reading (week of May 17th)
    • 8th Grade - Science, History (starts Week of May 12th)
    • 8th Grade - Reading, Math & Algebra I EOC (week of  May 17th)

More specific information will be shared with all as we proceed. Please call 512-594-2000 should there be any questions or concerns.

Credit By Exam Registration: Deadline April 15th

The end of the year CBE (Credit By Exam) testing window is May 3,2021  – May 28,2021. The registration deadline is April 15,2021. If you are interested in testing, please contact your Grade Level Counselor (maria.baughman@pfisd.net)  for a registration form. The grade levels for this testing window is K – 12th grade.  The district is no longer offering at-home CBE testing (Proctorio).  If students want to take a CBE through our district offerings, students must come to campus to test at the time designated by the campus in the windows set by the district.  Students should review the Study Guides provided by UT in the link below prior to signing up for testing.  This review can help students and parents determine if there is a need for acceleration.  They can also consult with their classroom teacher(s) for additional feedback on whether acceleration is needed.

8th Grade Parents: Big Decisions Course

The Big Decisions course for 8th grade will begin in May. The information letter and the opt-out form are linked below. • Information about PTECH Academy

Posted by Philip Clayton on 3/5/2021

    Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have had a great Panther week. Typically, when spring arrives we notice an increase in various behaviors at the middle school level. I am proud to report that this has not been the case thus far. I praised the 6th graders today as they departed from the cafeteria in a very orderly fashion, social distancing and wearing masks appropriately. It was the best I’ve seen all year and they typically do a really good job following our safety protocols. I was a very impressed and proud Principal today. They also received recognition over the PA system for those behaviors. For as long as I’ve been an educator, I will never underestimate the power of positive feedback and recognition for students. It is a powerful element when reinforcing behaviors.

I know the STAAR test is right around the corner and there are many questions. I will be sending information after spring break regarding timelines, scheduling, and dates. We are in the process of planning a smooth transition for all of our kiddos. Stay tuned for more information.

The information below is an opportunity for our 8th grade students for next school year regarding the PTECH academy. Please take advantage of this great opportunity for your child if you are interested! I have also included information about our Regional Science Fair Winners!!

PTECH program (Pathways through Early College High School): PfISD has partnered with Austin Community College to provide our students with a dual credit curriculum. It is a program designed for our rising 9th graders (current 8th graders) to begin high school and receive their Associates degree at a completely FREE cost to them in either Computer Programming with a C++ certification or Education with an Educational Aide I certification by the time they graduate from high school.

The Computer and Information Technology program (CIT Academy) is being housed at Connally High School and the Pfuture Teachers Academy is being housed at Weiss High School; however, it is open to any rising 9th grader, regardless of where they are districted to attend (students if accepted into the program will have to agree to transfer to Weiss for Pfuture Teachers Academy or Connally for CIT Academy). Transportation IS provided from the student’s home to their PTECH campus and back again. There are no prerequisites for students to apply. Any rising 9th grader in the district is able to be a PTECH student and the only requirement is that they fill out the application and be willing to transfer (transfers are automatically accepted for PTECH students) to the school that houses the PTECH program for which they are participating.

Regional Science Fair: PMS students have been outstanding the last few years at the Science Fair and this year is no different! We had 11 students in grades 6-8 that placed in 1st through 5th place in many categories. Some of them even placed in multiple categories. The areas of study were Mathematics, Plant Sciences, Microbiology, Computer Science, and Watershed Protection. Congratulations on your hard work and this achievement! Winners were announced during lunches today.

So you all know, we are continuing to focus on passionate customer service here on campus and I’ve loved that some of you all are reaching out to me directly with needs regarding your child. Please keep it up if you need anything at all. My email and phone number are below. I hope each of you have a wonderful Panther weekend!

    Buenas tardes padres y tutores,

  • Method of Instruction Information

Posted by Philip Clayton on 3/2/2021

    Good Afternoon Parents!

It’s hard to believe we have entered the month of March. This school year has seemed to fly by and slow down at times. While it has been an unusual school year, I know our processes at Pflugerville Middle School continue to improve and that is the message I have made efforts to convey to faculty, staff and students. If we can persevere through challenges and aim to keep improving, we are on the right track.

We are entering the 4th 9 weeks grading period after Spring Break. Due to some calendar changes this year, March 12th is now a student holiday and marks the beginning of Spring Break for students. Faculty and staff will be on campus on the 12th to continue planning instruction for students. Information below relates to changing your child’s Mode of Instruction officially for the 4th nine weeks and a mandatory cheerleading zoom today for those interested in joining the cheer squad.

The google form below will allow you to change the Mode of Instruction to either virtual or in-person learning, ONLY if you need to make a change. If you are not making any changes to the learning setting for your child, there is no need to access the form.

We are leaving this form open until March 10th at 12:00 p.m. for all families to make any appropriate changes for their child’s mode of instruction, which will begin officially on March 22nd (first day of the 4th 9 weeks).

Vamos a perseverar a través de los desafíos y aspirar a seguir mejorando, estamos en el camino correcto.
