Counselor's Corner
Becca Wang
My name is Becca Wang and I am the counselor at River Oaks Elementary! I am excited to continue being a part of the River Oaks family!
I grew up in Houston and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where I got my bachelor’s degree in elementary education. I received my master’s degree at Texas State University in professional counseling.
I previously worked here at River Oaks for six years as a first-grade teacher. I am happy to still be a part of River Oaks as the school counselor.
My job as a school counselor is to help all students acquire the skills necessary for successful academic, career, and social and emotional development. I will accomplish this through a planned, developmental, and comprehensive guidance program. I will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, community, and other school personnel to meet all students’ needs.
I will provide services in these five areas:
Guidance Lessons
Lessons in each classroom about basic life skills such as goal setting, self-esteem, anger management, friendship skills, diversity, personal safety, and conflict resolution.
Counseling Groups
Small groups of students will meet together to work through issues who have similar experiences (ex. parents who are divorced, issues with making friends, behavior problems, etc.) Small group members meet once a week during their lunch time with parent permission for 5-8 weeks.
Individual Counseling
I can also meet with students individually to talk about issues or concerns. This is done on a need by need basis. I can also refer you to a community therapist or counselor from the community.
Consultation
I am also available to speak with parents individually about situations that may arise. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your concerns. I also consult and coordinate with teachers, parents, and the community regularly.
Ashanti’s Closet
We also have a food pantry and clothing closet for anyone families that may need extra assistance. Please contact me to set up a time to come get what you may need. We are also always accepting donations of children’s clothing and canned goods.
If anyone has questions or concerns, please stop by my office, call or e-mail me, and I would be happy to help.
