Gifted and Talented Professional Expectations

Gifted & Talented (G/T) Training Requirements

In accordance with Texas Administrative Code §89.2, educators serving gifted and talented students in PfISD must meet specific professional development requirements. Below is a guide to help you stay compliant.

  1. Initial 30-Hour Foundational Training

New-to-G/T teachers must complete 30 hours of foundational training either before they begin their assignment or within their first semester.

Training Curriculum:

  • Nature & Needs of the Gifted & Talented (6 hours)

  • Social & Emotional Development of the Gifted & Talented (6 hours)
  • Screening, Assessment, & Identification of the Gifted (6 hours)
  • Differentiation of Curriculum & Instruction for the Gifted & Talented (6 hours)
  • Developing Creative Thinking in the Classroom (6 hours)

Note: Secondary instructors who have completed APSI, OnRamps, or other advanced academic training during the summer prior to their assignment may be eligible to apply those hours (up to 18 hours) toward this requirement. Please contact the Advanced Academics Coordinator to verify eligibility.

  1. Annual 6-Hour Update

Once your foundational 30 hours are complete, you are required to complete at least 6 hours of G/T professional development annually.

  • Who needs this: Elementary G/T cluster teachers, PFLEX teachers, and advanced academic core content teachers (AP, Advanced, and Dual Credit/Enrollment).
  • Deadline: All annual updates must be completed by the last day of school.

  1. Responsive Learning Platform & Access

PfISD provides access to the Responsive Learning platform for both foundational training and annual updates.

  • Access: Links and login credentials are distributed via the Curriculum & Instruction and Principals’ newsletters at the beginning and end of each semester.
  • Cost: Access is free to PfISD teachers. Please note that since the district funds these courses, we ask that you only register for courses you intend to complete.

Note: While teachers are not required to complete their GT PD through the Responsive Learning platform, all certificates of completion must include the number of GT hours awarded by the alternate provider. Further, all submitted certificates are subject to district approval.

 

  1. Submitting Your Training

Once you have finished a course, please follow these steps to ensure your record is updated:

  1. Upload: Submit your certificate of completion to KickUp.
  2. Archive: While the district keeps a record, you are also required to maintain your own personal files of all G/T training certificates. Proof of training may be requested at any time.
