Math Pentathlon
What is Math Pentathlon?
Mathematics Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games. It includes supportive curricular and instructional activities as well as assessment tools for students in grades K-7. This motivational program strengthens basic math concepts and skills, aligns with STEM and National and State Mathematics Standards, and stimulates creative thinking while developing problem-solving skills. A focus on conceptual understanding and the integration of spatial, computational and logical reasoning are key attributes of Mathematics Pentathlon. By using specially designed games and activities that differentiate instruction, ALL students of varying abilities and learning styles are motivated to enjoy math and spend more time learning this subject matter. These factors are critical in improving students' performance in math and this is one tool that can be used to foster this improvement.

How can PfISD campuses participate in Math Pentathlon?
PfISD elementary and middle school campuses can implement Math Pentathlon during the school day or as an after school opportunity. Time needed to play games is approximately 45 minutes once or twice per week. Coaches, either teachers or adult volunteers, are required to teach and facilitate the games. Depending on when practices are conducted, the number of coaches needed varies. For example, an after school program may need one coach for each of the following groups: K-1; 2-3; and 4-5. If implemented during class time, it can be scheduled as part of a learning block that is facilitated by the teacher. Campuses do not have to compete at tournaments to use the math pentathlon resources.
If students choose to participate in the Academic Tournament, volunteers are required (1 per 2-3 students) to help monitor games at the tournament. In addition to coaches and volunteers, a campus contact is needed. Campus contacts recieve a $250 stipend to provide information to parents, volunteers, and faculty. They also encourage participation, organize teams and coaches, keep records of participation, secure trainings for coaches if needed, coach teams or assist with coaching, and assist with registration as needed. They also communicate campus needs to the district MP contact.
How can parents or volunteers get involved?
Math Pentathlon is open to all students K-7 in Pflugerville ISD. Parents and volunteers are essential to the facilitation of Math Pentathlon on our campuses. Please contact your child's school to learn if the school has chosen to participate in this elective activity and see how you can help.
