The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
The McKinney-Vento Act, is the Federal Law that ensures the educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Project Hope is the name of the PFISD program that supports the McKinney-Vento Act. A family may be eligible if they are living in the any of the following situations:
- Unhoused (Car, abadoned building, park etc)
- Shelters
- Doubled Up
- Hotel/Motel/Campground
Eligible children and youth have the right to:
- Receive a free, appropiate public education
- Enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment.
- Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents
- Free Breakfast and Lunch
- Enroll in the local school or continue attending their school of origin.
- Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if requested
- Receive edcuational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to the student's needs.
Unaccompanied Youth
Unaccompanied youth include young people who have been separated from their parents for a variety of reasons, including those who have run away from home, been displaced out of their homes, or have been abandoned by parents. Unaccompanied youth have the same rights and protections as students who are experiencing homelessness.

If you feel that you are eligible to receive services through the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act based on the information above, contact the Social Worker assigned to the campus to begin the qualification process.
Displaced students may be enrolled provisionally for 30 days without documentation. The school district will assist in obtaining the required documentation for enrollment.
