Boundary Alignment 2017-2018
Additionally, the Board considered additional boundary changes to help balance attendance at several elementary and middle schools. This included:
- Elementary: To relieve attendance at Highland Park Elementary, there was a proposal to adjust its boundaries with Brookhollow Elementary.
- Middle School: To relieve attendance at Kelly Lane Middle School, there was a proposal to adjust its boundaries along with Park Crest and Pflugerville middle schools.
Pflugerville ISD’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the district’s proposal to draw new boundary lines for Weiss High School and Vernagene Mott Elementary, as well as adjust existing boundaries for several elementary and middle schools that are at or over capacity. Both new schools are scheduled to open in fall 2017.
The decision came after more than two months of well-attended community input sessions, which provided valuable feedback for the final proposal. The board approved several changes to the original boundary proposal that were a direct result of community feedback.
The final proposal included Weiss High School’s boundary to include all of the existing Cele Middle School zone, as well as the small portion of Dessau Middle School that was previously zoned to Hendrickson High School. Additionally, the neighborhood of Bohls Place, previously zoned to Hendrickson, was also included in the new Weiss zone. Bohls Place students will also be re-zoned to Cele Middle School, but those currently attending Park Crest Middle School are grandfathered until they complete 8th grade, with no transportation provided. Weiss High School will open with freshmen and sophomores only – with approximately 800-900 students attending the first year.
The final proposal also included Mott Elementary’s boundary to include portions of Riojas and Rowe Lane elementaries. Additionally, the neighborhood of Park at Blackhawk (Phase III) is to remain at Rowe Lane Elementary. Also, a portion of Rowe Lane’s zone was adjusted to move some students to Dearing Elementary.
The Board also approved additional boundary changes to help balance attendance at several elementary and middle schools. These include:
- Elementary: To relieve capacity at Highland Park Elementary, its boundary was adjusted with Brookhollow Elementary. An additional adjustment, based on community feedback, re-zoned the Rosemont Apartments to Timmerman Elementary.
- Middle School: To relieve attendance at Kelly Lane Middle School, its boundary was adjusted with Park Crest Middle School, and a further adjustment was made to move some students from Park Crest to Pflugerville Middle School.
Rising 5th and 8th graders (current 4th and 7th graders) will be allowed to remain at their current campus for their last year at the school. Current sophomores and juniors at Hendrickson High School will continue to attend Hendrickson.
The Board also decided to address the issue of allowing UIL varsity fine arts and team athletic participants zoned to Weiss HS to transfer back to Hendrickson HS in a separate discussion and vote. That vote resulted in a 3-3 split, which defeated the measure. There will be no UIL transfers to remain at Hendrickson High School.
Other provisions of the boundary proposal included not allowing sibling transfers to campuses that are closed for transfers in 2017-18. Also, current non-enrolled siblings of Spanish immersion students who are zoned to Mott will not automatically be eligible for the program. These students will be eligible for the lottery for the two-way dual language program that will be offered at Mott.
Finally, transportation for all Weiss HS and Mott Elementary students will be provided under the hazardous route provision, due to the current lack of sidewalks near both those schools.
All changes go into effect with the 2017-18 school year.
