FAFSA Application Now Available

October 5, 2020

Members of the Class of 2021 interested in attending college can now apply for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid now open for the 2021-22 academic year.

Students whose families have been impacted by the pandemic, with themselves or family members losing employment or reduction in wages, are encouraged to apply because they may be eligible for an adjustment to their potential financial aid.

Every year PfISD Postsecondary Readiness also encourages seniors to complete the FAFSA form as soon as possible when the application window opens, since there are limited funds available through the federal program and waiting to apply could result in fewer funds being available to students qualifying for financial aid.

Students can learn more about federal financial aid and complete the FAFSA form by visiting studentaid.gov

In addition to the FAFSA application window opening, PfISD Postsecondary Readiness would like to inform seniors of scholarships the College Board is awarding, simply for completing the FAFSA.

The College Board Opportunity Scholarship is giving students a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship along with other smaller scholarships and monetary awards during October, November and December. To learn more about the scholarships being awarded by the College Board, please visit https://opportunity.collegeboard.org/.

Students can get assistance with the FAFSA application process through the College Board as well. The organization offers a free online FAFSA virtual assistant chat feature called Wyatt that can walk you through the application process and help to make sure students don’t miss any steps.

PfISD Postsecondary Readiness also has created a PfISD Senior Checklist with monthly tasks to keep students on track with applying for college admission, financial aid, scholarships and more. The list also has projected start dates for certain steps in the college acceptance process and when seniors can expect to hear from colleges regarding their application status.

The Austin Chamber also has launched its annual social media contest to promote FAFSA completion and FAFSA event registration for area seniors.

Seniors may be eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship and other prizes from the Austin Chamber of Commerce for completing the FAFSA and participating in other activities. To participate in the Austin Chamber FAFSA scholarship contest, seniors can follow five easy steps.

To be eligible to win high school seniors must:

  1. Register on the FAFSA Campaign Contest Page to enter and verify social media accounts.
  2. Register on CollegeInsight.com to attend a FAFSA Event.
  3. If you sign up for and attend a Virtual FAFSA Event, you get 1 entry into raffle
  4. Tag as many senior friends as you can to sign up on the Austin Chamber Instagram Page.
  5. You get an additional raffle entry for each friend who signs up for and attends a Virtual FAFSA event.

Completing both the FAFSA and Apply Texas application are PfISD graduation requirements and both are included on the PfISD Senior Checklist as reminders.

For more information or to get assistance in beginning their college application process, seniors are encouraged to contact the college and career readiness counselors on their respective campuses as well as their school counselor.
