Academic All-State

UPDATE: Hendrickson High School senior Bryan Ross captured a silver medal in Editorial Writing at the UIL Academic State Meet on May 1.
Ross earlier became the first Hawk to advance to state in three journalism events. He is coached by Kari Riemer.
Another noteworthy Hawk, Sam Brown, finished 21st in Calculator Applications at state. Brown is the first Hendrickson student to advance to the UIL academic meet in a math event. Brown is coached by T.J. Johnson.
Pflugerville High School sophomore Kenneth Kalu finished tied for 18th in Current Events with three other competitors at state. Kalu is coached by Marissa Stewart.
Pflugerville ISD had four students advance to the state UIL Speech Event, which takes place May 24-25. The district also has three individuals and a team advance to state speech as alternates.


Seven Pflugerville ISD students have earned a trip to the UIL Academic State and Speech events next month.
Students from each PfISD high school competed in the UIL Academic Conference 5A Region III meet, held April 16-17 at various sites in the region. 
Hendrickson High School finished fifth overall, just edging out Pflugerville High School by a point (83 and 82 points, respectively).
Hendrickson students also carved their names in school history, with Sam Brown becoming the first Hawk to advance to the UIL academic meet in a math event, and Bryan Ross becoming the first journalism student to advance to state in three events.
Brown, coached by T.J. Johnson, finished third in Calculator to advance.
Ross, coached by Kari Riemer, captured a silver medal in Editorial, and bronze medals in Headline and Features. He is also a member of the HHS journalism team that finished second overall, and will serve as the alternate team to state.
Audrey Fife, also from Hendrickson, advanced to state with a third-place finish in Persuasive Speaking.
Also in Persuasive Speaking, Coltrane Drexler of PHS took second to advance to state. Drexler also advanced in Lincoln Douglas Debate, capturing a gold medal at regionals.
Ron Hester coached Drexler to state in both events, as well as fellow Panther Joseph Garza, who won first in Informative Speaking.
Kenneth Kalu, coached by Marissa Stewart, won a gold medal for PHS in Current Events at regionals, while Audrey Higley took gold in Prose for PHS coach Victoria Guevara.
Connally High School will have student Anthony Rojas and a computer science team at the ready as state alternates. Rojas finished sixth in Computer Science at regionals under the direction of coach Duan Le.
Seth Deaton of Hendrickson will also serve as an alternate, after picking up a sixth-place finish in Editorial Writing at regionals, as will fellow Hawk Rudolf Bendixen, who was fourth in Informative Speaking.

The UIL Academic State Meet is scheduled for May 1 in Liberty Hill, while the state UIL Speech Event will be online only May 24-25.
