So Much to Celebrate at PHS!

Posted by Zachary Kleypas on 10/29/2021

Greetings Panthers,

Happy Friday!

There is so much to celebrate and be excited about at PHS! Let's get straight to it:

Volleyball is Playoff Bound!

PHS swept Weiss in three tightly-contested sets on Tuesday night (the last one was a nail biter!) to finish second in the district standings and bump Weiss to third.

Hendrickson and PHS must await a tiebreaker match between Lockhart and Ann Richards to determine who their opponent will be in the first round. The first round of the playoffs is Monday and Tuesday.

Band & Football:

Our amazing PHS Band is participating in the Super Regional on Friday, November 5th. Our performance time is at 4 PM. The group will then travel back to Pflugerville for the halftime performance at the football game against Pflugerville in the Battle of the ‘Ville (You will NOT want to miss that game). This week PHS football travels to Georgetown.

National Honor Society (NHS) Induction:

Wednesday night we celebrated our annual NHS induction ceremony. It was a beautiful event that honored some VERY deserving PHS students. These students are true examples of the four pillars of NHS: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Character. Please help me celebrate the following students and their amazing sponsors Ms. Matthews and Ms. Stewart:

Austin Chamber of Conference State of Education & Talent 2021:

On Thursday, representatives from PHS, the other High schools, and district leadership were invited to the State of Education & Talent 2021 recognition ceremony.

PHS received not one but TWO awards at the prestigious event!

  • Highest ApplyTexas Submission Rate by Enrollment for a High School Campus
  • Highest FAFSA Submission Rate by Enrollment for a High School Campus

I am so proud of the work led primarily by our College and Career Advisor Nick Howell. These awards are in recognition of supporting our students in furthering their future in College, Career, and/or Military  Readiness.

Coats for Kids!:

It is that time of year again – the annual coat drive!  Please donate any new or gently used coats or hoodies to any Ready Set Teach student, FCCLA member or Baseball player or simply bring them to the Front Office of PHS.   Let’s once again help keep kids in central Texas warm and retain our Coats For Kids CHAMPION title!

Construction Projects Update:

When we welcomed back students and staff in August, many updates and upgrades had been completed since the last time they were in the building. New hallway floors were added throughout the building, painting and tiling work was done to improve aesthetics, a new Ag facility was opened, new fencing was added in multiple parts of the exterior of the building, but not everything was complete.

I am excited to share some updates on some recently finished projects and some that are progressing along beautifully:

  1. Our amazing band hall and theatre arts black box overhaul is a huge project, as seen by these two pictures from the exterior of the building. Included in this project are updates to the FAC restrooms and a new internal hallway to access the band and theatre arts spaces.

       2. Our Dance Hall space is fully framed and awaiting flooring. The locker room associated with the space is nearly complete and sporting the beautiful Panther blue.

       3. The health science classrooms are starting to look like classrooms! What was once a completely gutted space in between two currently functioning classrooms will be ready for teachers and students soon.

         4. Murals and artwork can be found throughout the building from the cafeteria to the stairwells, to the lecture hall. School spirit and pride are hard to miss on these beautiful installations.

FREE Code 2 College Opportunity:

I’m thrilled to start working with you and supporting Pflugerville High School students in applying to our Programming.

We are getting ready for our Winter Programming that will start in January. Our application is currently open and will close on December 1, 2021. We had 15 PHS students in our Fall Programming and are looking to increase that number by 25!

We also have launched an initiative called Vision 2024, where we aim to place 200 Black and Latinx women into STEM roles by the year 2024. Code2College Vision 2024 is focused on the identification, recruitment, preparation, and workforce placement of women who have the talent and potential, but historically and currently lack the access to pursue these high-need and high-wage careers. Students in this mentorship program will be paired with both technical and executive-level female mentors who are currently in the STEM field.

Clarifying STAAR EOC (End-of-Course)

2019-2020 School Year:

If a student passed their STAAR tested class, then the State awarded a COVID-Waiver for the 2019-2020 school year.  This was ONLY for the 2019-2020 school year.  If a student did not pass the STAAR tested class, then the student has to take that STAAR to graduate.

For example – a student takes English 1, Biology and Algebra 1 during the 2019-2020 school year and passes English 1 with a 78, Biology with an 84 and earns a 62 for Algebra 1.  The State awarded the COVID-Waiver for English and Biology but the student will now have to earn a passing credit for Algebra 1 and will need to take the Algebra 1 STAAR.

2020-2021 School Year:

All students must take the STAAR EOC.  Taking the STAAR EOC to graduate is NOT an option.  Parents/Guardians were given the option to send their virtual student(s) to campus to test in the Spring or to wait and take the STAAR EOC at a later date.  The option given was to postpone the STAAR until Summer 2021 or December 2021.

Whether or not to take the STAAR to graduate is not an option – all STAAR EOC must be taken to graduate.
