Happy Thanksgiving from PHS!

Posted by Zachary Kleypas on 11/19/2021

Greetings Panthers,

Happy Friday and Happy Thanksgiving Break!

I hope everyone is able to take some time to relax, refresh, and recharge! Whether you are traveling far or staying home, gathering with friends and family, or staying in, please be safe!

Basketball Season:

Basketball season is well underway for both the girls and the boys. The boys are hosting a freshman tournament on campus Thursday and Friday and Varsity welcomes Marble falls tonight. The girl’s team will be home again on December 13th against the Round Rock Dragons.

Girls Basketball was featured with tons of great pics in this article after their clutch 1 point win over Cedar Ridge the other night: Statesman Article

For a full list of schedules, please check out our PfISD website, and specifically Rank One: Game Schedules

(Final Decision) Midterm Week:

After a week of voting, it was a photo finish! Ultimately, Option A won out:

The main reasons were as follows:

  1. Option B left some folks with 4 straight classes in a day and thus no conference period one day, and two on another.
  2. For students, particularly seniors, coming to school for 5th and 6th period at the end of the day and thus until 4:15 was problematic.

Thus, here is our Fall 2021 Midterm Schedule:

2021 A & B  FINAL PHS Midterm Exam Schedule

Due to adjusted schedules after the break including the midterm schedule above and STAAR retakes, there will be no ACE on Dec. 6th – 17th

Thus, starting Dec. 6th 1st and 5th period will start at 9:00 am every day for ALL STUDENTS.

Code to College Free Opportunity:

From the Librarian

School IDs were printed this week.  Starting after Thanksgiving, all students should be wearing their IDs.  The Grade levels are color coded.  Seniors – Blue, Juniors – Purple/Maroon, Sophomores – Red,  Freshmen – Yellow.  If a student did not get their ID printed, please have them come to the library.

A Word from the College and Career Center:

I hope that you are excited for the upcoming break. First and foremost, I cannot tell you how incredibly proud I am of our students this year. Our Class of 2022 has submitted over 1200 college applications, made strides to enlist in the military, and even found an opportunity for passion within the workforce. These students have even earned over 1.5 million in scholarships thus far! What a truly amazing group of individuals. Below are some very important updates from the College and Career Center.

College Applications (Class of 2022): Many college applications have an upcoming deadline of December 1st, 2021. If you/your student has not yet completed all of their college applications, please continue to work on these applications. Mr. Howell will be available via email during the Thanksgiving break. Colleges with important upcoming deadlines include (but are not limited to): University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, University of Houston, and many more. However, please wait on applying to ACC until January with Mr. Howell.

Financial Aid Graduation Requirement (Class of 2022): Please remember that the State of Texas requires all graduating seniors to complete the 2022-2023 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the TASFA (if you qualify for this instead) in order to graduate from a PFISD high school. The deadline to complete this item is November 30th, 2021. If your family needs assistance completing this form, please email me directly. We will offer two more FAFSA nights to assist families in completing the form. Don’t forget that it will require your legal guardian’s 2020 tax information.

Scholarships (Class of 2022): I am hopeful that your students have begun applying for scholarship opportunities, as there are many available. Colleges & Universities may require students to fill out an extra scholarship form that can be located on their website. The College and Career Counselors amongst the Pflugerville ISD High Schools have begun to put local scholarships in the SchooLinks program (under the Finances section). The SchooLinks page and the National Scholarship Page can assist you in finding opportunities

Free College Tuition (All families) – Please remember if your family makes under $65,000/year and completes the Financial Aid Application in a timely manner during senior year, most public institutions in the State of Texas will offer you free tuition. For more information please reach out to Mr. Howell

SchooLinks (All Families) – Students in 9th – 11th grade should be exploring all of the opportunities within PFISD’s new College & Career Readiness platform, SchooLinks. In this platform, they can explore different careers, colleges, and financial resources (such as scholarships). Please make sure that you/your student is going into the platform regularly and if they are considering college after high school….they should be marking schools they are interested in as a “favorite”. This will help the College & Career Center invite them to events that their specific college may be hosting.

Please remember that Mr. Howell is available via email to answer any questions that you may have during the Thanksgiving Break. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
