Trio of PfISD students named National Merit Semifinalists
September 29, 2021
A trio of Pflugerville ISD seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
The PfISD students honored as National Merit Semifinalists are Pranit Arya and Nguyen Ly from Hendrickson High School and Connally High School’s Zakaryya Vilanilam. All three students worked their way through PfISD schools over their educational journeys. Arya attended Murchison Elementary and Kelly Lane Middle School, and Ly progressed through Dearing Elementary and Kelly Lane. Vilanilam previously attended Parmer Lane Elementary and Westview Middle School.
Each year the NMSC hosts the National Merit Scholarship Program, with students competing for scholarships that may pay for up to four years of higher education using the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as the primary part of the program’s assessment.
From here, the National Merit Semifinalist list will be narrowed down to the Finalist level for those completing several other requirements. Only approximately 16,000 students across the U.S. are named National Merit Semifinalists each year, and about 90% of all Semifinalists attain Finalist status, with half winning a National Merit Scholarships as Merit Scholars.
