PfISD students succeed at regional science fair

Pflugerville Independent School District students did great at the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair this past weekend, February 21-23, 2019 at the Palmer Events Center.

Pflugerville ISD has 14 students advancing to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair hosted at Texas A&M University in College Station on the weekend of March 29-30. To advance to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair, a project must be awarded third place or higher in their category. Pflugerville Middle School student Kenneth Kalu placed second in junior division Mathematics. Pflugerville High School students Lamisa Mahmud, Keira Tran and Ngoc Tran placed second in senior division Microbiology. Two students from Dessau Middle School received third place awards in their categories, Venus Dinari in BioMedical & Health Sciences and Keionah Jackson in Robotics & Intelligent Machines. Drake Durflinger from Kelly Lane Middle School placed third in Chemistry. Seven students from Pflugerville Middle School received third place awards in the categories, Adeline Blust and Elena Howard in Mathematics, Nigel Norman and Adam Taylor in Microbiology, Paul Gonzales in Physics and Astronomy, and Rachel Arrowood and Astrid Quezada in Plant Sciences.

Five Pflugerville students also received special awards presented by outside organizations. Kenneth Kalu of Pflugerville Middle School received the Broadcom Masters SSP Award. Broadcom Masters SSP Award recipients are eligible to be nominated to become a Broadcom Masters Finalist that places them in the running for scholarships and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the Broadcom Masters competition on October 19-24. Pflugerville High School students Lamisa Mahmud, Keira Tran and Ngoc Tran received the Superintendent Award for Pflugerville ISD. Lynne Le of Dessau Middle School received a TAWWA/WEAT Excellence in Water Award.

Our Pflugerville ISD students also did great at the elementary portion of the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair. In a non-competitive fair, PfISD elementary students received 120 first place ribbons, 65 second place ribbons and six third place ribbons. Seven PfISD elementary students also received special awards. Rilo Baker of Windermere Elementary received the Austin Energy Electrical Engineering Innovation Award. Elizabeth Miller also of Windermere Elementary received the Health Through Science Award. Danica Mitchell of Caldwell Elementary received the Austin Parks Foundation Young Environmentalists Award. Mia Wilkerson of Dessau Elementary received the Dell Healthy Living Health Innovation Award. Juan Carlos Cupeles of Ruth Barron Elementary received the Dell Medical School Future Health Leader Award. Both Antwon Wellon of Dessau Elementary and Keon O'Neal of River Oaks Elementary received the Earth Day Positive Futures Award.
